Source text - English 1. Wisdom of the Ancients
By the time wirtten history began, some fifty centuries ago, mankind had learned much more than our primitive ancestors knew.
Human begins in many different parts of the world had discovered not only how to use the skins of animals and birds for clothing, but also how to weave wool, cotton, and flax to make cloth. They had discovered not only how to hunt animals and fish for food, but also how to grow grains and make bread, both leavened and unleavened, as well as cakes made out of rice. They had learned how to sow seeds in the wild, and how to clear the land and till the soil, and to irrigate and fertilize it. They had learned not only how to make homes in caves and other natural shelters, but also how to build houses and monumental structures out of wood, stone, bricks, and other materials, some existing naturally, others man-made. They had also learned how to make and replicate statues and other works of art, and how to mine ores from the earth, smelt them, and make new metals by combining those found in nature.

인류의 역사가 글로 남겨지기 시작한 5천년 전의 인류는 그 이전에 살던 원시 조상보다 삶을 영위하는데 필요한 많은 지식을 가지고 있었다. 당시 세계 도처에 살고 있었던 인간들은 들짐승과 날짐승의 가죽으로 옷을 지어 입는 방법뿐만 아니라 직물을 만들기 위해 모, 면과 아마를 짜는 방법을 알아냈다. 또한 동물과 물고기를 효과적으로 잡는 방법을 알았고 곡식을 재배하여 빵을 만들고, 쌀로 떡을 만드는 방법도 터득하여 자신들의 음식 문제를 해결했다. 그들은 안정적인 식량 확보와 생산 증대를 위해 황무지에 씨를 뿌리고 땅을 개간하며 토양을 기름지게 하는 방법도 알고 있었다. 또한 동굴이나 자연적인 은신처를 그들의 집으로 만들었을 뿐만 아니라 나무, 돌, 벽돌 그리고 기타 여러 가지의 자연적인 재료로 기념비적인 건물을 짓는 방법도 알게 되었다. 그리고 동상이나 다른 예술작품을 만들고 복제하는 방법을 터득했으며, 땅에서 광물을 캐내고 그것을 녹여 새로운 금속을 만드는 방법도 알아냈다.
