My name is Rhys Thomas and I decided to set up Cygnus Translation after graduating from University. We are based in the heart of the beautiful South Wales countryside, just a few miles West of the Brecon Beacons National Park. 'Cygnus' is the Latin word for 'swan', and being situated in close proximity to Swansea, as a passionate follower of 'The Swans' (Swansea City Football Club), and having studied at Swansea University, this stood out as a perfect name for the business.
My passion for languages began at a young age and continued throughout my time in education. I am very proud to have obtained a First Class Honours joint honours degree in German and Business Studies from Swansea University, where I followed this up by achieving an MA in Translation with Language Technology.
I have experience of living abroad including time spent working at a translation agency in Germany. Combining this with my qualifications and experience of working as a freelance translator I believe I know what it takes to offer a first-class service to you and your customers.
As a fluent Welsh speaker and proud Welshman I am passionate about the future of the language and this passion extends to a keen interest in minority languages and what they contribute to culture and society the world over.
I recognise the cultural importance of translation - translation is not just about language. I see Cygnus Translation as a bridge that helps simplify and improve communication between cultures. To do so, we do not only require a large vocabulary but also cultural, historical and social skills, which impact our work. We want to do our part in helping the world get a little closer, and improve the exchange and understanding between cultures.
After all, as the philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein once said - "The limits of my language are the limits of my world."
