Source text - English It is a well-known fact, according to science, that bumblebees cannot fly. But, as it turns out, not only can they fly, but they do so much more efficiently than any aeroplane or helicopter. Their secrets are efficient control, very smart materials, advanced aerodynamics and fast actuators with elastic return mechanisms. Science still has some way to go to match the capabilities of insects, but attempts to emulate them in machine form are yielding many new technologies.
A few years ago, the idea got around, mainly from the US, that it might be possible to make micro air vehicles with flapping wings, about 150mm across. The intention was and is to make machines that could perform surveillance, move around unobtrusively and hover with a minimum of effort - on the battlefield or within buildings and malfunctioning chemical plants. A swarm of such machines could constitute a formidable weapon or force for construction.
Artificial insects for covert observation are still some way in the future, but more immediate benefits of this technology are expected to include hearts similar to natural ones, and a host of new materials and micro-engineering techniques.
At a recent conference, Micro-robotics - can technology outsmart nature?, at the Institute of Materials in London, it became apparent that there has been a considerable amount of research aimed at making such machines work, including a study of what we can learn from insects and how they are constructed.
The flight of the bumblebee
Professor Charlie Ellington from the Department of Zoology in Cambridge revealed that the bumblebee, and most other insects and hummingbirds, move their wings rapidly back and forth, twisting them by 120 degrees at the end of each stroke, so that they move through the air with an approximately 30-degree angle of attack. This generates a vortex at the leading edge that spirals out towards the wing extremity, increasing as it does so.
It is this that creates suction and most of the lift - two or three times that which can be obtained by any kind of steady, forward motion. It works well for insects, because they only need to fly at up to 10mph, requiring an energy consumption of around 30 to 70W/kg, as opposed to 150W/kg for a conventional aeroplane or the even larger figures associated with helicopters.
The problem with applying this to conventional aeroplanes is that the vortices create a lot of drag, but small machines can benefit. Conventional model aircraft are at the mercy of gusts of wind, while insects with their smart, conforming wing shapes, can exploit them.
Nature's composites
Dr Robin Wootton of the University of Exeter explained how nature, not being able to use metals to construct insects, instead invented advanced composites. One of the consequences is that insect legs and wings have mechanical properties that vary widely and can endure very large deformations.
The hind wing of a locust has Young's Moduli varying from 0.3 to 9.5Gpa at different points, allowing it to deform in an optimum manner. Similarly, spiders get around with very long spindly legs that act as shock absorbers and comformable actuators, yet rarely break.
Dr Wootton demonstrated a model insect thorax, a deformable monocoque, which allowed attached wings to be flapped using a single acting actuator between the front and back ends, although a real insect would use several muscles, not least because it needs to work its wings independently in order to manoeuvre.
Artificially reproducing such materials is difficult, but Dr Eoin O'Keefe of DERA Farnborough described how a promising substitute can be made by reverse emulsion polymerisation. The process was originally patented by Unilever back in the 1980s, and uses water droplets dispersed in a special oil. When the oil is polymerised, the resulting structure consists of interconnected voids in a foam, with pore sizes as small as 100 microns across. When fibre-reinforced, the final structure closely resembles balsa wood, but can be made much stronger and non-biodegradable. The finest pore metal foams can be made using silica micro balloons 100 or 30 microns across in aluminium silicon alloys.

Ma, come sappiamo, non solo sono in grado di volare, ma lo fanno in modo più efficiente di qualunque altro aereo o elicottero. Il segreto di questa loro capacità risiede nella loro guida dinamica, nei materiali intelligenti, nella sofisticata aerodinamica e nei veloci attuatori con meccanismi di ritorno elastici. La scienza è ancora lontana dall’eguagliare le capacità degli insetti, ma gli esperimenti condotti per emularli stanno dando vita a molte nuove tecnologie.
Alcuni anni fa, gli Stati Uniti cominciarono a promuovere l’idea della possibile creazione di micro velivoli a battito d’ali con un diametro di 150mm. L’intenzione era, e sarebbe ancora oggi, quella di costruire dispositivi da poter utilizzare negli ambiti della sorveglianza e dello spionaggio e avvalersene per il volo stazionario su campi di battaglia o all’interno di edifici o centrali chimiche danneggiate. La costruzione di uno sciame di questi dispositivi diventerebbe un’arma ed uno strumento formidabile.
La creazione di insetti artificiali per lo spionaggio rappresenta ancora un’immagine futuristica ma, alcuni tra i benefici più imminenti di questa tecnologia sarebbero apparati cardiaci simili a quelli naturali ed una gamma di nuovi materiali e di nuove tecniche di microingegneria.
Durante la recente conferenza “Microbotica: la tecnologia può superare la natura?” tenutasi presso L’instituto dei Materiali a Londra, è parso evidente come una consistente quantità di studi fossero stati dedicati al funzionamento di queste macchine, tra cui uno studio dedicato a come gli insetti sono strutturati e dei benefici che ne potremmo ricavare.
Il volo del bombo
Charlie Ellington, un professore al Dipartimento di Zoologia di Cambridge, ha spiegato che il bombo e molti altri insetti e trochilidi, sbattono le ali rapidamente, ruotandole di 120° alla fine di ogni battito in modo da poter volare con un angolo d’attacco di circa 30°. Questo crea un vortice d’aria nella parte iniziale dell’ala che si espandende per poi raggiungere l’estremità più esterne.
Questo meccanismo produce aspirazione e una spinta ascensionale due o tre volte più potente di qualunque altra constante spinta propulsiva. Questo meccanismo è di gran vantaggio agli insetti: per volare devono raggiungere circa 15 chilometri all’ora e richiedono un consumo energetico di circa 30-70 kW per chilo di peso; un aereo, invece, richiede 150 kW per chilo e gli elicotteri hanno consumi persino più alti.
Questo sistema, se applicato ad aerei commerciali, produrrebbe una eccessiva resistenza; ma lo si potrebbe applicare ad altri piccoli velivoli. I modellini aereonautici, per esempio, sono in balia di ogni soffio di vento, mentre gli insetti riescono a sfruttare il vento grazie alla forma intelligente delle loro ali.
I Compositi della Natura
Per dare origine agli insetti, la natura, non in grado di utilizzare metalli, ha dato vita a sofisticati compositi, così come ha spiegato il Dottor Robin Wootton dell’Università di Exeter. Questi compositi rendono le proprietà meccaniche delle gambe e delle ali degli insetti molto mutevoli, fino al punto da poter sostenere estese deformazioni.
L’ala posteriore di una locusta presenta un modulo di elasticità che varia in diversi punti tra lo 0.3 al 9.5 GPa, permettendogli di deformarsi facilmente. In modo simile, i ragni si muovono con gambe affusolate che fungono sia da amortizzatori sia da buoni attuatori ed il tutto senza spezzarsi.
Il Dottor Wootton ha mostrato un modellino di torace d’insetto in scocca deformabile che permette alle ali di sbattere con un solo attuatore installato tra i due estremi del torace; seppure un insetto reale, in bisogno di muovere le ali indipendentemente per girare, avrebbe usato vari muscoli.
Riprodurre artificialmente questi materiali sarebbe complesso, ma il Dottor Eoin O’Keefe parte di DERA (Defence Evaluation and Research Agency – Agenzia per la Valutazione e la Ricerca di metodi di Difensa) in Farnborough ha spiegato come un potenziale materiale sostitutivo potrebbe essere realizzato attraverso una polimerizzazione ad emulsione inversa.
Questo processo, che usa gocce d’acqua disperse in un olio speciale, in origine era stato patentato da Unilever negli anni ‘80. Quando l’olio viene polimerizzato, la struttura che ne risulta è formata da una schiuma con fori interconnessi di un diametro minimo di 100 micron. Quando la struttura finale viene rinforzata con delle fibre diventa simile al legno di balsa, ma con la differenza di poter essere rinforzata e di non essere biodegradabile.
Per creare delle migliori schiume metalliche porose si potrebbero usare dei micro palloncini di silice in leghe di silicone d’alluminio con una grandezza che varia da i 100 ai 30 microns.
