1. Being, Time and Art

Ricardo Cinalli’s own choice of title and language - on this occasion his native Spanish - consists of three haiku-like short lines which appear to express a poetic conceit we should perhaps simply enjoy, rather like haiku is enjoyed, in terms of rhythm, musicality and so on…But these lines have a metaphysical ring about them which requires special attention; prima facie they appear to deal with time and being, two of the most tantalizing concepts philosophy has ever produced. If we seek, as indeed we should, a hermeneutics to unlock their ‘mystery’, this will in turn throw light on the universal themes which dominate Cinalli’s painting.
The concepts of ‘being’ and ‘time’ have been linked by Martin Heidegger in his seminal book: Being and Time in which Heidegger – bravely perhaps - embarked on a quest of demystification. By-passing the ontological issue of the universal nature of being, he focused on ontical (particular) beings, that is, you and me, famously using the German word Dasein. And so, Heidgeger elegantly argued, we are all Daseins
- individual ontical entities - living within our individual time line which is in fact the everydayness of our existence. But as we realize in our ordinary existence as we go about our business, that there are no aims and objectives to fulfil, no essence to model ourselves upon, no codes of morality (categorical imperatives) to follow, we are overcome by anxiety (angst). For Heidegger, anxiety uniquely provides the royal road to authenticity, which in lay terms could be explained as having the courage to face up to our human predicament but for him this experience results in a process of empowerment rather than renunciation or despair. In this state of ‘angst’ then, he argues, we feel ‘uncanny’ and it is this concept of the ‘uncanny’ (unheimlich) that Sigmund Freud proposed as a new aesthetic category , which - as he rightly pointed out - has hitherto been totally neglected in specialized literature.
The subject of the ‘uncanny’ is a province of this kind. It is undoubtedly related to what is frightening – to what arouses dread and horror; equally certainly, too, the word is not always used in a clearly definable, sense, so that it tends to coincide with what excites fear in general. Yet we may expect that a special core of feeling is present which justifies the use of a special conceptual term. One is curious to know what this common core is which allows us to distinguish as ‘uncanny’ certain things which lie within the field of what is frightening.

It is also this new aesthetic category of the ‘uncanny’ that can be universally predicated of Ricardo Cinalli’s oeuvre.
His choice of visual language is figuration and within this context, his choice of subject matter is restricted to the three universal themes of love, death and religion, to which I shall be returning later.
