ગુજરાતની ધરતીને કુદરતે છૂટે હાથે સૌંદર્ય બક્ષ્યું છે. પૂર્વમાં સહ્યાદ્રિ અને સાતપુડાના પર્વતોની હારમાળા, પશ્ર્ચિમમાં કચ્છનું રણ, ઉત્તરે ગિરિરાજ આબુની ડુંગરમાળા અને દૃક્ષિણે દૃમણગંગાનું નૈસર્ગિક સૌંદર્ય ધરાવતા ગુજરાતના ગૌરવંવતા લોકજીવનના વિસ્તાર-પટ પર નજર કરીશું તો સમૃદ્ધ એવો કળા, સંસ્કાર અને સંસ્કૃતિનો મૂલ્યવાન વારસો ધબકતો નજરે પડે છે. અહીં મેં લોકવિદ્યા, લોકકલા અને સંસ્કૃતિનો સંદર્ભ રાખ્યો છે.
સંસ્કૃતિનો સર્જક માનવી:
લોકસંસ્કૃતિને આદિમાનવની મનોવૈજ્ઞાનિક અભિવ્યક્તિ તરીકે ઓળખવામાં આવે છે. લોકસંસ્કૃતિ એ લોકસમૂહનું સહિયારું નિજી સર્જન છે. જનજીવન પોતાની રસ, રુચિ, સવલતો, સુવિધાઓ અને ભૌગોલિક પરિસ્થિતિ અનુસાર કેટલીક પ્રણાલિકાઓ આરંભે છે, જે આગળ જતાં રીતરિવાજ અને રૂઢિરૂપે લોકજીવનનું મુખ્ય અંગ બની જાય છે. સંસ્કૃતિના સીમાડામાં સમાઈ જતી બોલીઓ, કંઠસ્થ સાહિત્ય, સંગીત, કળા, ઉત્સવો, ધર્મ, વસ્ત્રાલંકારો, ખેતી, પશુપાલન, નૌકાયાન, હથિયારો, ઘર-ખોરડાં, રાચરચીલું, દેવમંડળ, આચાર-વિચાર, સંસ્કાર અને સંસ્કૃતિ, વિકાસના કેડે ચડેલા માનવીના હાથે થયેલું સર્જન છે. માનવજાત જેટલાં વર્ષો જૂની છે એટલાં વર્ષો જૂની એની લોકસંસ્કૃતિ પણ છે.
ગુજરાતની સંસ્કૃતિનું ઉગમ સ્થળ:
ગુજરાતની લોકસંસ્કૃતિના ઉગમ વિશે કહેવું હોય તો એમ કહી શકાય કે, સાબરમતીના તીરે કૂબા બાંધીને રહેતા આદિમાનવના હાથે સૌ પ્રથમ વાર એનું પારણું બંધાયું હશે. જ્યારે સૌરાષ્ટ્રની લોકસંસ્કૃતિનું પારણું નેસડાઓમાં રહીને પશુપાલન કરતી અરણ્યવાસી જાતિઓના હાથે બંધાયું હશે. ડૉ. હસમુખ સાંકળિયાએ કરેલું સાબરમતી ખીણનું સંશોધન આ વાતને સમર્થન આપે છે. મોહેં-જો-દડો અને હડપ્પાની નગરસંસ્કૃતિઓ વિકાસ પામી તેને પહેલાં પણ વિચરતી જાતિઓની લોકસંસ્કૃતિ અસ્તિત્વમાં હતી જ. આ સંસ્કૃતિના સ્પષ્ટ અવશેષો આજેય ગુજરાતના આદિવાસીઓનાં ઓજારો, દેવ-દેવલા, ભૂવા, જંતર-મંતર અને પશુ-પ્રાણીઓ તથા વૃક્ષપૂજામાંથી પ્રાપ્ત થાય છે.
ગુજરાતની ભૂમિ પ્રાચીન સંસ્કૃતિનો વૈભવ-વારસો ધરાવતી માનવ વસવાટવાળી ધરતી છે. આ ધરતી પરથી લોકજીવનના પ્રાચીન અવશેષો પણ ભરપટે મળી આવ્યા છે. ભારતમાંથી હડપ્પા સંસ્કૃતિના સંખ્યાબંધ પુરાવાઓ પ્રાપ્ત થયા છે. ગુજરાતમાં થયેલા પુરાતત્ત્વીય ઉત્ખનનો દ્વારા લોથલ અને કચ્છમાં ધોળાવીરા ખાતેથી મળી આવેલા અવશેષો સાડાચાર હજાર વર્ષ પહેલાંના ઈતિહાસ પર પ્રકાશ પાડે છે અને સૈકાઓ પહેલાં વિકાસ પામેલી માનવ સંસ્કૃતિનું સુપેરે દર્શન કરાવે છે.
Translation - English Diverse Folk Culture of Gujarat:
Nature has bestowed outstanding beauty on Gujarat. Gujarat has the Sahyadri and Satpuda mountain range in the east, the desert of Kuchchh in the west, the mountain range of Abu in the north and the natural beauty of Damanganga in the south. If we look at the proud way of life of the folks of Gujarat, we are sure to have the feeling that Gujarat really has varied and rich heritage of art, civilization and culture. My main focus here is the skills and expertise of the folks, folk art and folk culture.
Man - the creator of culture:
Folk culture is known to be the psychological attitude of primitive man. Folk culture is a personal joint creation of the folks. Folks start certain systems according to their interests, passions, facilities, amenities and geographical conditions which in course of time become integral part of their life in the form of traditions and customs. Culture includes dialects, oral literature, music, art, festivals, religion, dress and ornaments, agriculture, animal husbandry, marine, weapons, homes-dwellings, furniture, gods-goddesses, behavior and thoughts (way of life), and goodness (righteousness). In all, culture is a creation of man who was on the path of development and advancement. The folk culture is as old as the humans.
Origin of the culture of Gujarat:
If we are to speak about the origin of the culture of Gujarat, we could say that it must have been first started by the primitive men who were living in the kuba (a small hut-like house mainly in the farm) on the bank of the Sabarmati River. Whereas that of Saurastra by the forest-dweller tribes who were living in the Nesda (a small hut-like house mainly around the forest) and engaged in animal husbandry. Research on the Sabarmati Valley done by Dr. Hasmukh Sankaliya confirms this fact. The folk culture of nomadic tribes was already in existence prior to the Town-culture of Mohen-jo-daro and Harappa developed. Considerable remains of this culture can still be found from the tools, deities, Bhoova (priest of tribal people), spell-casting & black-magic, animals and tree-worship.
The land of Gujarat possesses glorious ancient cultural heritage and is the land of human inhabitants. Plenty of ancient remains of the folk culture have also been found from this land. A large number of evidences related to Harappan culture have been found from India. A number of archaeological excavations have been undertaken in Gujarat and consequently the remains found from Lothal and Dholavira throw light on the history which dates back to four thousand five hundred years. Thus, it represents well-developed human culture that took place centuries ago.
