English to Hebrew: Tykocin – 27-29.08.2010 - Dom Festival General field: Other Detailed field: History
Source text - English Dom Festival is to take place in Tykocin from 27th to 29th of August. The inspiration of the event is the story by Bruno Schulz who described the world of small, pre-war shops in his novel "Cinnamon Shops". This world will be restored in the Golden Street in Tykocin.
Before the war, Golden Street was full of life. It was the center of commerce and crafts of the town. There was a number of shops and restaurants. During the festival the street is to regain its pre-war character for one night. The outlook of the street as well as network of shops and workshops will be reconstructed. The motto of the event is 'night trading' since this phenomenon played key role in the story by Bruno Schulz, 'Night of the Great Season'. The writer, who was inspired by the exceptional multi-ethnic culture of the small town, is the patron of the festival.
In 1939, in Tykocin had 3,000 inhabitants. Jews constituted about 50% of the population. Most of them lived near so-called Jewish market in the western part of the district Kaczorowo. Few relics of the multi-cultural past of Tykocin survived. One can admire the synagogue built in 17th century, the Talmud house and the house in which Marek Zamenhof (father of Ludwik Zamenhof, Esperanto creator) used to live.

Translation - Hebrew
המוטו של האירוע הוא 'night trading' מאז התופעה שיחק תפקיד מפתח בסיפור ע"י ברונו שוורץ, , 'Night of the Great Season".

English to Hebrew: Kielce – History
Source text - English Up to the 1930s Jews were not permitted to settle in Kielce, as a result of the city being within the jurisdiction of the bishops of Kraków, who in 1535 had been granted the de non tolerandis judaeis privilege by King Zygmunt I. In the 16th and 17th centuries, this ban was frequently broken, hence in 1761, on the strength of the bishops’ decree, all Jews living in Kielce were ordered to leave the city. However, many kehillas were still developing and growing in the surrounding towns, like Chęciny, Pińczów, and Chmielnik[1.1].
Having received the permission from the Municipal Office, due to the intervention of Jewish merchants from Chęciny, Jews began to resettle in Kielce from 1833. Although Kielce’s inhabitants, in fear of economic competition, succeeded in suspending this decision, a large number of Jews lived in the city illegally, and another group was formally registered in the Pakosz municipality. In 1843 Kielce’s inhabitants forced the Council of Administration to decide on banning the Jews from the city starting from 1 July 1844. However, already in 1858–1862 Jews returned to Kielce. At that time the city welcomed dismissed Russian servicemen of Jewish origin and their families, as the ban did not apply to them. In 1852 there lived around 100 Jews in Kielce; they belonged to the Chęciny municipality and constituted a small percentage of the city’s population[1.2]. It was only after Aleksander Wielopolski introduced his reforms that the tsarist authorities issued a decree in 1862, which allowed the Jews to settle freely in Kielce. As soon as 6 years later – in 1868 – an independent kehilla and the first Jewish cemetery were established. The first rabbi in Kielce was Tuwia Gutman HaCohen. His successor was Mosze Nachum Jeruzalimski, an expert on rabbinic literature[1.3]. There was also an active community of Hassidic Jews in the city.
Towards the end of the 19th century, at the beginning of the 20th century, and during the interwar period the kehilla of Kielce rapidly developed demographically as well as economically. By the year 1873 Kielce was inhabited by 974 Jews, and by 1909 as many as 11,206. Depending on the financial status, Jews lived in the city centre and in the poorer suburbs – Szydłówek, Psiarnia, Piaski and Barwinek. Before World War I, Kielce had a big synagogue erected in 1902, 9 houses of prayer, over 30 cheders attended by more than 900 boys, and several private secular, elementary, and secondary schools for boys and girls. Jewish merchants had a significant number of industrial plants, among which there was the vast limestone processing plant “Wietrznia”, quarries, tanneries, woodworking plant, plus nearly half of the city’s shops, bakeries, and furniture shops. The Jews also ran many smaller industrial plants manufacturing footwear, metal goods, also candles and soap. The richest Kielce inhabitants of the Jewish origin at that time included the Rozenholc, Goldfarb, Lifszyc, Chelmner, Gołębiowski, Machtynger, Ajzenberg, Bugajer, Orbajtel, Kaminer, Waksberg, and Tenenbaum families, as well as Josef Orbajel, Lemel Kahan, Herszel and Eliezera Rajzman, and also Joel and Icchok Klajnman[1.4].
On 11 November 1918 the Jews in Kielce held a rally to manifest their demand for all Polish Jews to be secured political and cultural autonomy. In response, Polish activists of the right-wing party destroyed many Jewish-owned shops and houses.
During the interwar years, several banks in Kielce belonged to Jews (among them Spółdzielczy Bank Handlowy [cooperative commercial bank] run by Aaron Jozef Moszkowicz and Jakob Fridman, Bank Dyskontowy [discout bank] run by Chaim Wajnryb and Herszl Sercarz, Bank Kredytowy [credit bank] run by Melecah Engelrad, Mejer Zloto, and Mosze Cohen, and Bank Pożyczkowy [loan bank] run by Mordechaj Fiszel and Judel Kaminer)[1.5]. Many factories, industrial plants, and shops were also the property of Jews (e.g. textile, leather, clothing, and grocery shops, haberdasheries and shops selling imported foodstuffs and spices). Jews craftsmen enjoyed a strong position in the local market, especially tailors, hat-makers, tinsmiths, shoemakers, carpenters, painters, and glaziers, and of course clockmakers and jewellers. Many Jewish bakeries and butcheries were open not only to Jews but also to Catholics. Apart from the Polish press, Kielce also published the “Kielcer Zeitung” in Yiddish and had Jewish printing shops. A significant number of Jews went into the freelance occupations of doctors, dentists, and lawyers[1.6].
Translation - Hebrew
