Bio
I am returning to translating after 12 years of teaching mathematics, science and finance in various schools in Kent (UK).

Most of my translating experience occurred on the island of Ibiza, where I ran the island's magazines in English (Ibiza Now) and German (Ibiza Heute). We had a two-month break every winter, during which it became my habit to take on some translation jobs, partly for my own education, and partly as a kind of paid hobby. It is fair to say that I did not have to look for jobs at that time - they came looking for me. I had the luxury of picking only the jobs that really interested me.

This was why I translated a presentation about Cristobal Colón (Christopher Columbus) into English, which the author Nito Verdera was extremely pleased about, and which gave me a wonderful reputation! Thank you very much, Nito.

Later I worked on many projects with the local daily Spanish newspaper, the Diario de Ibiza, including a daily page in English in the Summer of 1993. Later I worked on the the newspaper's annual Tourist Guide, itself a collaborative project with the Island Council, for several years.

I translated a book about the Ibiza Podenco dog (Tales of Mel by Rafael Sainz) into English. This project was proof-read by the professor of English at the Complutense University of Madrid at the time, who was incredibly impressed, and who recommended that people read the English translation rather than the original, as it was much better written.

I am now seeking work as a freelance translator. I love translating books, but I do realise that such opportunities are few and far between. I look forward to specialising in those subjects where I already have professional qualifications ( i.e. science, particularly biology) and those where I already have a great deal of experience (journalism, tourism, history).

One of the great joys of translation, for me, is in trying to showcase the original author's talents as well as I can in English, and my ambition is always to try to turn out a piece of work that conveys the author's meaning as clearly as possible in a new language.
