Spartacus (109–71 BCE) was a leader of the slaves in the Third Servile War, a major slave uprising against the Roman Republic. Little is known about Spartacus beyond the events of the war, and surviving historical accounts are sometimes contradictory and may not always be reliable. All sources agree that he was a former gladiator and an accomplished military leader.
Spartacus' struggle, interpreted by some as an example of oppressed people fighting for their freedom against a slave-owning oligarchy, has been an inspiration to many political thinkers. It has also has been used as the subject in literature, television, and film.
Origins
The ancient sources agree that Spartacus was a Thracian. Plutarch describes him as "a Thracian of Nomadic stock.” Appian says he was "a Thracian by birth, who had once served as a soldier with the Romans, but had since been a prisoner and sold for a Gladiator".
Florus described him as one "who from Thracian mercenary, had become a Roman soldier, of a soldier a deserter and robber, and afterward, from consideration of his strength, a gladiator". Some authors refer to the Thracian tribe of the Maedi, which in historic times occupied the area on the southwestern fringes of Thrace, along its border with the Roman Macedonia (present day south-western-most Bulgaria). Plutarch also writes that Spartacus' wife, a prophetess of the Maedi tribe, was enslaved with him.
The name Spartacus is otherwise attested in the Black Sea region: kings of the Thracian dynasty of the Cimmerian Bosporus and Pontus are known to have borne it, and a Thracian "Sparta" "Spardacus" or "Sparadokos", father of Seuthes I of the Odrysae, is also known.

스파르타쿠스(B.C.109-71)는 3차 노예전쟁의 리더로, 로마공화정에 대항해 봉기를 일으킨 노예들의 중심인물이었다. 전쟁관련 부분들 외에는 스파르타쿠스에 대해 알려진 게 거의 없으며, 그나마 남아있는 자료에서조차도 서로 대치되는 내용들이 있기 때문에 정확한 사실이라 보기 어렵다. 각각의 내용들 중 일치되는 부분은 그가 봉기 이전에 한 때는 유능한 군 지휘관이었고, 그 후에는 검투사로 활동했다는 것이다.
역사가들은 스파르타쿠스 봉기를 노예제에 대항해서 자유를 위해 싸운 억압받는 민중들의 귀감으로 설명하기도 하며, 그의 투쟁은 많은 정치 사상가들에게 영감을 불러 일으켰다. 또한, (수 많은) 문학작품, TV 드라마, 영화의 주제가 되기도 했다.
기원

Source text - English Arts meets science at the Cardiff Science Festival
Art and science. It's perhaps not the most comfortable or obvious of pairings but the two worlds will overlap next week at the Cardiff Science Festival.
Perhaps surprisingly, there are a number of arts-inspired events taking place at the week long festival, which begins on Monday 9 July.
“Intrigued by the new festival I spoke to committee member Sarah Vining, who told me that although there are a number of high profile science festivals that take place across the UK - each of which draws thousands of visitors-Cardiff was sadly lacking in the science festival department.”
Largely organised by a team of volunteers and armed with a small amount of funding, the result is a mix of 50 events that blend the quirky with the more conventional lectures and talks.
• Cardiff BookTalk event: Cardiff BookTalk is a new book group set up Cardiff University that discuss themes from the best in both classic and contemporary literature. In this special festival event on Thursday the group will discuss Cormac McCarthy's The Road. Entry is free but places must be booked in advance, see the Cardiff Science Festival website for more details on how to book a space.
• Science, art and music event on Friday at The Crofts Pub: featuring an art performance by Barrie Davies from 6pm followed by free live music and entertainment hosted by Scott Travers of Radio Cardiff from 8.30pm.

Source text - English Heather was wearing the wrong dress. It had seemed like a good idea in the morning— it was a tight little black thing; she'd looked fantastic in the mirror— but now she was thinking that she should have worn something demure. This was a foolish dress to meet your intellectual hero in.
Waiting in the coffee shop for the great man to arrive, Heather was squirming with nervousness, and she began to wonder why she was here— why she had gone to such lengths to meet this man, when she knew he couldn't possibly be as interesting in person as he was in his books. She had a wild urge to flee— to scribble a note of apology, leave it with the waiter , and drive all the way back to Providence. But she stayed where she was. She was nervous; she was a little scared; but she could live with that. Fear of any undertaking, to her way of thinking, was usually a reason to go ahead with it.
The door opened and a man came in from the cold. He was wearing an enormous coat— a coat that was like a house— and a big, furry, many-flapped hat. He peeled off the hat and stopped for a moment in front of the cash register, stamping off the snow. He was wearing galoshes.
They had never met, but he picked her out instantly, and he came toward her, smiling. Old, fat, bald, leaning awkwardly on a cane. The man of her dreams.
I can't believe it's you," she said, as he pressed her hand and sat heavily across from her.
What she wanted to say was: You've been dear to me since I was a girl. You were one of my life-teachers. You understood me; you helped me understand myself. If reading a book is a naked encounter between two people, I have known you nakedly for years.
She wanted to say wild things to him, but here he was, struggling out of his coat, and he seemed terribly old and terribly frail, and above all terribly unfamiliar, and she suddenly felt shy. When she read his work, it was as if he poured his soul directly into hers, and they mixed. Now there were bodies in the way.
She felt as if she were in the middle of an earthquake. The furniture in her mind was sliding around. Reading his work, she had always thought of him as a contemporary. In fact— as she'd known, of course, with her rational mind—he was closer to her grandparents' age. And though she'd entertained many imaginary pictures of him over the years, it had never occurred to her that he might be fat. To her mind, genius was gaunt.
He was older and larger than she'd imagined, and somehow both softer and harder. His hand was soft when she shook it; his face was saggy, like a poached egg. In his eyes, though, there was something chilly and ironic. He was an odd combination of the soft and the shrewd. He looked like a gangster's uncle.
"I can't believe it's me either," Schiller said— breathing heavily, looking for a place to rest his cane.

커피숍에서 자신의 우상이 도착하기를 기다리면서 헤더는 너무 긴장이 돼 가만히 앉아있기 힘들었다. 그러자 자신이 왜 여기 왔는지 궁금해지기 시작했다. 그의 책 속에 나오는 인물만큼 흥미로운 사람일리가 없다는 걸 알고 있는데도 왜 만나려고 그렇게도 애를 썼을까. 도망가 버리고 싶은 충동이 사납게 일어났다. 죄송하다고 몇 자 끄적거려서 종업원에게 남겨두고 프로비던스까지 그대로 차를 몰아 돌아가고 싶었다. 하지만 헤더는 그대로 있었다. 긴장되고 약간 두렵기까지 했지만, 견뎌낼 수 있을 것이다. 헤더의 경험으로는 견뎌내야할 두려움이 조금이라도 있다는 건 보통, 계속할 가치가 있다는 것이었다.
문이 열리고 한 남자가 추운 바깥에서 커피숍 안으로 들어왔다. 집채만큼 거대한 외투에, 털이 많고 덮개가 많이 달린 커다란 모자를 쓰고 있었다. 모자를 벗고는 계산대 앞에 잠시 멈춰서 발을 구르며 덧신의 눈을 탁탁 털어냈다.
처음 만나는데도 남자는 헤더를 바로 알아보고 미소지으며 다가왔다. 늙고, 뚱뚱하고, 대머리에다, 지팡이에 어설프게 의지한 채. 헤더가 꿈에 그리던 그 사람이었다.
남자가 헤더의 손을 꼭 쥔 다음에, 육중한 몸으로 맞은편에 앉을 때, 헤더가 말했다. “선생님을 뵙게 되다니, 정말 실감이 안나요.”
헤더는 이렇게 말하고 싶었다. ‘어렸을 때부터 선생님은 저의 우상이었어요.’, ‘선생님은 제 인생의 스승이에요.’, ‘선생님 덕분에 저 자신을 이해할 수 있게 됐답니다.’, ‘책을 읽는다는 게 두사람이 진실한 모습으로 대면하는 것이라면, 저는 선생님의 참모습을 오래전부터 알고 있는 셈이죠.’
헤더는 과감하게 말하고 싶었다. 하지만, 그는 여기와서 힘겹게 외투를 벗고 있다. 너무 늙고 약해 보였으며, 무엇보다 너무도 낯설게 보이자 헤더는 갑자기 쑥스러워졌다. 그의 작품을 읽을 때는 그의 영혼이 그대로 자신에게 쏟아져 들어와 두 영혼이 썪이는 느낌이었다. 하지만 지금 이 자리에는 육체로 대면하고 있었다.
헤더는 지진의 한복판에 있는 느낌이었다. 머리속에서 가구들이 이리저리 미끌어지고 있었다. 그의 작품을 읽을때, 그가 항상 자신과 같은 시대를 살고 있다고 생각했었다. 이성으로 당연히 알고 있었지만, 사실 그는 헤더의 조부모 연배에 더 가까웠다. 그리고 오랫동안 그에 대해 수많은 이미지를 즐겁게 상상해왔지만 뚱뚱할 거라는 생각을 해본적은 한번도 없었다. 헤더의 마음속에서 천재는 수척한 이미지였다.
