« Je suis potier et enseignante travaillant en porcelaine fine et grès fait au tour.
Née dans une famille d'artistes et de musiciens, je n'ai jamais manqué d'encouragement pour voir, sentir et expérimenter de façon créative. L'argile, et la porcelaine en particulier, m'a donné toute une vie de défis, de possibilités et de rêves. Toujours intéressé par l’équilibre d'un pot, j'aime que les gens les prennent dans les mains et les touchent.
Je suis donc un potier fonctionnel, espérant intégrer esthétique et ergonomie - la beauté dans l'utilité. Je crée mes pots sur le tour du potier. En automne 2009, j'ai construit un four à gaz afin d’étudier les changements profonds provoqués par la chaleur, le temps, et l'atmosphère sur l'argile et la surface vernissé des pots. »
ÉDUCATION
Après avoir terminé ses études d'art et une année comme professeur à l'École Nationale de Beaux-Arts à Dublin, (maintenant la NCAD), Helena s'est spécialisée dans la céramique.
Au cours des étés 1963 et 1964, elle a étudié avec David Leach dans le Devon en Angleterre. Il était le fils du légendaire potier Bernard Leach, qui avait établi le premier atelier de poterie influencé par les japonais dans l'Occident à St. Ives, Cornouailles, Angleterre.
FONDATION
En 1965, Helena a épousé son professeur, potier-pionnier Irlandais, Peter Brennan, et ils ont créé un atelier ensemble dans leur maison à Dun Laoghaire, au sud de Dublin.
En 1966, ils ont exposé une gamme complète des premiers objets céramiques en grès cuites à haute température faits en Irlande, à la Galerie Irish Times à Dublin.
En 1968, ils ont tous deux représenté l'Irlande lors de la Conférence du Conseil mondial de l'artisanat au Pérou, au cours de laquelle ils ont fait quelques démonstrations de fabrication de théière.
Cette même année Helena a également exposé sa porcelaine fine faite au tour à l'Exposition internationale d'Osaka, au Japon.
PRODUCTION
Vers la fin des années soixante-dix, Helena et Peter avait fermement établi leur production (y compris la production de six enfants), et une galerie à Dun Laoghaire. Ils ont réalisé la production de grandes séries de vaisselles en grès fonctionnelles pour les restaurants, ainsi que les grands magasins, partout dans le monde. Helena était très occupée.
L’enseignement de la poterie a également formé en grande partie de leur intention d'établir la céramique comme force créatrice en Irlande. En dehors de la formation des apprentis dans l’atelier et l'enseignement à l’Ecole Nationale de Beaux-Arts, Helena a enseigné la production en atelier et l’a pratiquée une journée par semaine pendant dix ans, à partir de 1971. Helena et Peter étaient tous deux membres-fondateurs du Conseil de l'Artisanat de l'Irlande, de la Société des Designers en Irlande et de la Société des Potiers-Artistes, maintenant « Céramique Irlande . »
EXPANSION
En 1981, Hélène a été élue au Conseil d'Administration du Conseil de l'Artisanat. La même année, elle a été déléguée à l'Assemblée du Conseil de l'Artisanat Européen de Copenhague, et à la conférence sur l’Artisanat sur l'île de Bornholme en Danemark.
En 1986, Hélène a été invitée à représenter l'Irlande à l’Assemblée Internationale «Foire des Potiers » à Périgueux en France.
Exposant à toutes les expositions annuelles des Potiers Irlandais, démontrant et gagnant des prix dans plusieurs concours nationaux de l’Artisanat à la Royal Dublin Society, il restait toujours du temps pour ouvrir une galerie de céramique à Glenageary, près de Dublin, où des expositions bimensuelles ont permis de produire un large éventail de son œuvre, des objets fonctionnels et architecturels en grès à «l’Art de la Porcelaine».
EXPÉRIMENTATION
Dans les années 1990 Helena a continué à exposer à de nombreuses expositions de haut niveau. Depuis le décès de son mari et collaborateur Peter, au milieu des années 1990, Helena a labouré seule, bien que le soutien de Peter semble être là en cas de besoin.

ACCOMPLISSEMENT
Son inclusion dans l’exposition «Not Just Pots - la Céramique Irlandaise du 21e siècle», l’expo historique au Musée National d’Irlande en 2000, a fermement établi la position de Helena parmi les plus grands artistes en céramique en Irlande. Helena a enchainé en organisant une exposition à Kilkenny, « Peter Brennan - Potier-Pionnier Irlandais » qui reconnaissait la contribution importante de son mari défunt à la céramique, et l’influence qu’il a exercée sur la poterie irlandaise.
À l'automne de 2009, Helena a construit son nouveau four à gaz dans son atelier près du village d’Avoca dans le comté de Wicklow, à une heure au sud de Dublin. Depuis sa construction, elle a mis l'accent sur la production de pièces en porcelaine fine.

"I am a potter and a teacher, working in fine hand thrown porcelain and stoneware.
Born into a family of artists and musicians, I never lacked for encouragement to see, feel and experiment creatively. Clay, and in particular porcelain clay, has afforded me a whole lifetime of challenges, possibilities and dreams. Always interested in the balance of a pot, I like people to take them into their hands and handle them.
So I am a functional potter, hoping to integrate aesthetics into ergonomics – beauty into usefulness. I throw on the potter’s wheel. In Autumn 2009 I built a gas kiln to further investigate the profound changes wrought by heat, time, and atmosphere on the clay and glazed surface of the pieces."
EDUCATION
Having completed her art studies with a year teaching at the National College of Art , (now NCAD), Helena went on to specialise in ceramics.
In the Summers of 1963 and 1964 she studied under David Leach in Devon. He was the son of legendary studio potter Bernard Leach who had established the very first Japanese-influenced studio pottery in the West at St. Ives, Cornwall, England.
FOUNDATION
In 1965 Helena married her teacher, Irish pioneer studio potter Peter Brennan, and at this point they set up a studio at their home in Dun Laoghaire.
They exhibited, in 1966, a comprehensive range of the first high fired stoneware ceramics made in Ireland at the Irish Times Gallery in Dublin.
In 1968 they both represented Ireland at the World Crafts Council Conference in Peru, tying in some tea-pot making demonstrations along the way.
That year Helena also exhibited her hand thrown porcelain, made with Irish clay, in Japan at Osaka’s World Fair.
PRODUCTION
By the late seventies Helena and Peter had firmly established their production (including the production of six children), and a gallery in Dun Laoghaire. Production of large runs of functional stoneware for restaurants, and also department stores, around the world kept Helena very occupied.
Teaching also formed a large part of their intention to establish ceramics as a creative force in Ireland. Apart from training apprentices in the studio and teaching at the National Collage of Art (Helena taught studio production and practice for a day a week over a ten year period, from 1971). Helena and Peter were both founder members of the Crafts Council of Ireland, the Society of Designers in Ireland and the Craft Potters Society, now Ceramics Ireland.
EXPANSION
In 1981 Helena was elected to the board of the Crafts Council. Also in that year she was a delegate to the European Crafts Council Assembly in Copenhagen, and Seminar on the island of Bornholme, Denmark.
In 1986 Helena was invited to join in representing Ireland at the French international assembly ‘Fores des Potiers’ at Perigueux.
Showing at all the annual Irish Potters exhibitions, demonstrating and winning prizes at several National Crafts Competitions at the Royal Dublin Society still left time to set up a gallery in Glenageary where bi-monthly shows allowed for a wide range of work to be developed from functional to architectural stoneware to the ‘Art of Porcelain’.
EXPERIMENTATION
In the 1990’s Helena continued to exhibit at many high profile shows. Since the passing of her husband and collaborator Peter, in the mid- nineties, Helena ploughed on alone, although Peter’s support seemed to be there when needed.
In 1996 Helena was the first Irish potter to be included in IWCAT the Ceramic Residency in Tokoname, Japan. She left a body of work for their ceramic museum and returned to show drawings, sculpture and pottery in Dublin and Wicklow. Travelling in 2000 to South Africa to teach and show in Johannesburg and Cape Town widened her horizons even more.
Helena continued to exhibit and was included in the Royal Dublin Society Design Awards Travelling Exhibition, Sculpture in Context and Irish Contemporary Ceramics Exhibitions.
FULLFILLMENT
Being included in the landmark 2005 exhibition ‘Not Just Pots-Irish Ceramics of the 21st Century’ at the National Museum Collins Barracks firmly established Helena’s position among leading ceramic artists in Ireland. Helena followed this up by curating an exhibition in Kilkenny City ‘Peter Brennan- Irish Pioneer Studio Potter’ which acknowledged her late husband’s considerable contribution to, and influence on, Irish pottery.
In the Autumn of 2009 Helena built her new gas kiln at her studio near Avoca, Co. Wicklow. Since its construction, she has been focusing on producing fine porcelain pieces.
