What is a Business Plan?
• A business plan is a valuable tool for every business owner to convince lenders, investors and shareholders that your venture has the potential to be successful.
• It defines the market potential of the products/services the company develops and provides a distinct plan on how to best realize that potential through sound business practices.
• The business plan requires that a company addresses each issue in planning a new business venture in a systematic fashion, which helps to ensure the future success of the company.
Why Business Planning is Important?
• Business planning helps you better understand the business you are going to start, your potential business strength, weakness and opportunities. It provides a clear direction for a new business venture.
• A business plan is an essential document usually required by financial institutions when you require financing. It helps potential lenders or investors to decide if your business would be a good investment for them.
• A business plan sets a benchmark for recording and comparing progress. It helps you compare planned vs. actual performance.
• A good business plan is like a road map for your business, it helps you create strategies to manage growth and take advantage of opportunities and mitigate risks.
What are Included in a Business Plan?
• Executive Summary: Includes highlights from every important part of your business plan, it should be short and concise, sufficiently interesting to motivate the reader to continue reading the rest of your business plan
• Business Overview: provides a general overview of your industry, customers and the products/services that you provide or plan to develop; business’s history, goals and objectives, values, mission and vision ,ownership, the company's history (if any), as well as the company location(s) and facilities.
• Business Description: A detailed description of what your business has to offer; provides details about your products and services, and how your company or products/services will make a difference in the lives of your customers.
• Market Analysis & Marketing Strategy: Provides information about your target market, customer demographics, competition and distribution methods; mentions how your products and services satisfy the needs of your customers. Describe how you will promote and sell your products and services.
• Business Strategy: Discusses your competitive advantage, the unique strengths of your products/services that are your advantages over the competition. Describe your growth plan, how you see your business one to three years from now. Also, discuss how you manage risks.
• Operational and HR Plans: Includes an overview of operation requirements, inventory management and accounting systems, the organizational structure, the roles of the management team, and a personnel plan. The personnel plan should describe your personnel needs, position of each staff and their compensation and benefit.
• Financial Analysis: The financial plan is an extremely important section of any business plan. Care should be taken to address all financial issues and possibilities. It includes required investment, breakeven analysis, pro forma balance sheet, pro forma income statement, cash flow forecast and historical financial reports.
• The Appendices: Business plan may contain some of the following documents: letters of intent and/or support, resumes of key personnel, an organizational chart, patents and license documentation.
