Source text - French Kabîr est sans nul doute l'un des noms les plus fameux et les plus révérés dans toute la tradition indienne. L’un des 72 Districts de l’Uttar Pradesh en Inde est nommé d’après le Saint Poete, qui est connu comme mystique et réformateur religieux par les hindous, comme par les musulmans.
Qui était donc cet homme de très modeste condition, qui prétendit un jour inaugurer une vraie révolution des mentalités religieuses?
L'histoire se mêle ici à la légende, et très peu d'éléments biographiques concernant Kabîr peuvent être tenus pour certains. On sait peu de choses de Kabîr, si ce n'est qu'il était un tisserand et qu'il vivait à Bénarès, la cité sainte de l'hindouisme, à cette époque soumise à l'hégémonie musulmane, comme toute l'Inde nordique et centrale d’ailleurs.
Les dates concernant le saint-poète sont également incertaines, mais l'on sait qu'il vécut au 15e siècle - époque qui vibrait au rythme de la poésie et de la philosophie profonde de grands mystiques tel Rumi.
Translation - English Kabir is without any doubt one of the most celebrated and the most revered in the entire Indian tradition. One of the 72 Districts of Uttar Pradesh in India is named after the Saint poet, who is known by both hindus and Muslims as a mystic poet and a religious reformer.
Who was this man of such humble standing, who envisaged one day to launch a true revolution in the people's religious mind-set?
Here, history mingles with legend and very few biographic elements related to Kabir can today be accounted for. Very little is known about his life aprt from that he was a weaver living in Benares, the sacred city, cradle of Hinduism, which was at that time under the Muslim supremacy like the rest of North and Central India.
Dates concerning the saint poet are equally indistinct, but it is said that he lived in the 15th century - an era which vibrated to the rhythm of poetry and the profound philosophy of great mystics such as Rumi
