Expectations of an end to the crisis in 2009 sparked the very fast tightening of credit spreads. This explains why corporate bonds enjoyed an excellent year in the Euro zone and the US, with performances of 14,8% and 19,7% respectively, on bonds with good ratings, and 57% and 75% on high yield bonds. 2010 will be much calmer, as the bulk of the adjustment to credit spreads is behind us. Nevertheless, corporate bonds could potentially appreciate, given the promising macroeconomic scenario for this asset class and spreads that remain attractive.
We expect 2010 performance to be nearly 4,5% for quality corporate credits and 10-12% on high yield bonds. In this context, we favour global management that can take the pulse of each geographic zone, with lower volatility.
Why credit remains attractive
Firstly, the macroeconomic scenario of weak growth suits this asset class well. It allows firms to deliver results that are sufficient to redeem their debt without encouraging them towards aggressive leveraging, which is typical during periods of high growth. This is a very positive point for this asset class, as it is more important for issuers to be able to pay back their investors than to produce spectacular growth. Secondly, current credit spreads of around 150-160bp for issuers with good global ratings, and 600bp for high yield bonds, continue to indicate default rates that are well above both the historical average and market expectations. While expectations of 2010 default rates in the high yield sector vary between 2% and 4% depending on the agency, prices reflect an annual default rate of 8-10% and a cumulative five-year default rate of greater than 35%. The same is true of quality issuers, as spreads of 150bp imply an annual default rates of 2,5% and five-year default rates of 12%. This stands in contrast to average cumulative rates for a five-year time horizon, which have not exceeded 1% for quality issuers and 21% for high yield bonds since 1970. Investing in credit enables investors to benefit from an attractive carry and to bet on a rise in prices thanks to the convergence of expected default rates toward past levels.

Nous attendons, pour l’année 2010, des performances proches de 4,5% pour les crédits d’entreprise de qualité, et de 10 à 12% pour les obligations à haut rendement. Dans ce contexte, nous privilégions une gestion globale qui prenne le pouls de chaque zone géographique, avec une volatilité réduite.
Les raisons de l’attractivité pérenne des crédits d’entreprise
Tout d’abord, un scénario macroéconomique favorisant une croissance faible sied bien à cette catégorie d’actifs. Au lieu d’inciter les entreprises à s’endetter de manière incontrôlée (situation caractéristique en période de forte croissance), ce scénario permet aux entreprises de générer des résultats satisfaisants afin qu’elles honorent leurs dettes. C’est une bonne nouvelle pour cette catégorie d’actifs, les émetteurs privilégiant le remboursement de leurs dettes auprès des investisseurs plutôt qu’une hausse spectaculaire de leur croissance. Ensuite, les différentiels de taux, qui se situent actuellement autour de 150-160 points de base pour les émetteurs globalement bien notés, et de 600 points de base pour les obligations à haut rendement, affichent toujours des taux de défaut bien au-dessus de la moyenne historique et des prévisions de marché. Alors que les agences prévoient pour l’année 2010 des variations comprises entre 2 à 4% pour les taux de défaut issus du secteur des obligations à haut rendement, les prix reflètent des taux de défaut annuels de 8 à 10%, et des taux cumulatifs bien supérieurs à 35% sur une période de cinq ans. Il en va de même des émetteurs de qualité, les écarts fixés à 150 points de base impliquant des taux de défaut annuels de 2,5%, et de 12% sur une période de cinq années. Ces chiffres tranchent avec la moyenne des taux cumulatifs observée pour les cinq prochaines années, taux qui depuis 1970 n’excèdent pas 1% pour les émetteurs de qualité, et 21% pour les obligations à haut rendement. L’investissement dans les crédits permet aux investisseurs de profiter d’un report avantageux, et de miser sur une hausse des prix grâce à la convergence des taux de défaut espérés et de ceux observés par le passé.
