English to Norwegian: Women in Norwegian Shipping

This thesis explores the role of women in shipping during the long 18th century. There has been a dearth of research in this area. Capital in the hands of women and their financial dealings has not been investigated to any significant degree. We do know that women were ship owners and ran businesses. What percentage of ships did women own in terms of numbers and burthen ? To what extent could they engage in commerce as active and autonomous owners? It would be important to find out how they came into possession of their vessels, shares of vessels and shipping businesses. Did they inherit and at what stage in life did they do this? I have chosen to research these questions within the scope of Tønsberg, a 140 year old southern town of Norway. The Tønsberg area has been synonymous with trade and shipping since the time of the Hansas, and even before. This research focuses on the period of 1680 to 1842. The start of the period was when the richest ever ship owner and business woman Karen Stranger continued her deceased husband’s extensive business empire.

Bio
I have a Master's Degree in History and a Bachelor in English and Norwegian. I have been teaching in the Norwegian Secondary Education System for 34 years in the subjects English, Technical English, Norwegian, IT, Social Sciences and History. I have taken a wide range of courses over the years in all these fields.

My interests are wide ranging, and I have been reading extensively for more than 45 years in English and of course Norwegian.

I started out translating in my 20-ies, but turned to teaching courses in computer sciene in addition to my regular work as an educator at secondary and college level at a maritime school. I have credentials as a teacher of Norwegian to foreign students, in addition to the more normal teaching of both Norwegian and English to Norwegian students.

At present I work from both Norway and Spain.
