Source text - English In the time of the emperors, Kashgar became the centre of what was called the ‘Great Game’, a rendezvous location for undercover agents in the service of the Czars or the British Indian Empire. The two former British and Russian consulates are now a Chinese hotel, but in their gardens, a 19th-century ambience still prevails.
Just outside the Hotel Seman and its espionage nostalgia lies the chaos of the bazaars. Stalls selling figs and watermelons, straight out of a novel by Rudyard Kipling, run by three men wearing pointed beards and dressed in long black coats, who are joined later by the barber, who shaves his head like a fourth accomplice. As often happens in the bazaars of the East, corporations are grouped according to their genre, with hatters offering a choice of fashionable headwear, then blacksmiths, cutlers and dried-fruit merchants, who open the way to the bazaar manned by women wearing shaded, shimmering silks. Khotan, to be found in the east of Kashgar, has produced silk for millennia, and still continues the traditional route from farming to spinning and weaving on looms from another age. At lunch, taverns and restaurants are filled with delightful aromas between the smoke and smells of rice pilaf kebabs, a man juggles pasta and a long stretch of suoman, which leaves no doubt about the origin of spaghetti, namely Marco Polo!

По сведениям Всемирной организации здравоохранения, в мире курят более половины мужчин и четверти женщин, при этом особенно высокий процент курильщиков характерен для экономически развитых стран.
В Европу табак был завезен Х.Колумбом из Америки в конце 15 века. Вначале его назначение было в достаточной мере благородно - он использовался как декоративное растение. В 16 веке, после того как табак был подарен французскому королю в качестве лечебного средства послом в Португалии Ж.Нико (отсюда "никотин"), он стал модным во Франции. Неумеренное его употребление сопровождалось случаями отравления, что на определенном этапе побудило власти преследовать эту привычку. В начале 17 века табак был завезен в Россию. According to the World Health Organization, more than half of men and a quarter of women in the world are smokers; at this, a particularly high percentage of smokers are from economically developed countries.
Tobacco was introduced in Europe from America by Columbus in the late 15th century. At first, its purpose was quite worthy: it was used as an ornamental plant. In the 16th century, tobacco became fashionable in France after the ambassador in Portugal J. Nicot had presented it to the French king as a medicine (hence the name nicotine). Excessive use of tobacco had been causing nicotine poisoning, and at some moment the authorities started to persecute smokers. In the early 17th century, tobacco was introduced in Russia. But Tsar Michael I of Russia ordered to punish smokers with bastinado and whips, and Alexis of Russia imposed a ban on smoking in 1649. Only Peter the Great who emulated smoking during his stay in the Netherlands authorized the sale of tobacco and clapped a duty for its sale in the favor of the state. After that smoking gradually spread throughout Russia and became the evil very difficult to deal with.

The desire to be thin pervades Western society, and obesity is considered unattractive, unhealthy, and undesirable. Even before adolescence, children are aware of these attitudes, and more than half of preadolescent girls diet or take other measures to control their weight. Yet only a small percentage of these girls develop anorexia nervosa. Other factors, such as psychologic susceptibility, probably predispose certain people to develop anorexia nervosa. In areas with a genuine food shortage, anorexia nervosa is rare.
The disorder usually begins during adolescence, occasionally earlier, and less commonly during adulthood. Anorexia nervosa affects primarily people in middle and upper socioeconomic classes. In Western society, the number of people who have this disorder seems to be increasing. About 0.9% of females have severe anorexia nervosa, compared with only about 0.3% of males. However, mild cases may not be identified.

Company produces sophisticated compressors which are used by companies requiring efficient gas transfer, such as major oil and gas refineries.
Compressors of this type must offer longevity in the field so the plate valve material must be correctly specified and accurately manufactured.
Plant Manager, David Wain, says: “The main material for valves is 416 stainless, but we also machine 420 stainless, 17/4PH, 300 series stainless as well as cast irons. We put a lot of effort into the R&D of new materials to improve the performance of compressing different types of gas. Some of the compressors run dry while others are lubricated, this affects the valve material choice for different applications.”
“With the Coolant Saver fitted the bins are now practically empty when we check them,” Matt Hollins says. “We were topping up the tank with 25 litres once a day, this has been reduced to once a week, or a maximum of twice a week if it is running on more than two shifts.”
Such was the success of the Coolant Saver on the band saw that the company decided to fit a Wogaard unit to each of its machine tools. One of the first to be fitted was a Mazak Nexus vertical CNC machining centre, as machine operator, Joe Diggery, recalls: “We were topping that machine’s tank up once a day with around 50 litres, and now it is just two or maximum three times per week.”
The ingenious Wogaard Coolant Saver’s simplistic design and execution belies the potential benefits it can provide to manufacturing companies that operate a machine shop.
The cost of machining any component can always be broken down into numbers such as labour costs, wear on cutting tools and machinery, electricity and so on.
Cutting fluid consumption is very relevant on this equation as it makes up around 15 per cent of the cost of the machining operation. Assuming that a company can cut the consumption of cutting fluid for a single CNC machine in half with the Wogaard Cooland Saver, this machine can now produce components approximately 7.5 per cent cheaper than before. In comparison, cutting tools cost around 6 per cent of the machining operation.

Source text - English More than two hundred years ago, a French weaver named Joseph Jacquard invented a mechanism that greatly simplified textile production. His design replaced the lowly draw boy—the young apprentice who meticulously chose which threads to feed into the loom to create a particular pattern—with a series of paper punch cards, which had holes dictating the lay of each stitch. The device was so successful that it was repurposed in the first interfaces between humans and computers; for much of the twentieth century, programmers laid out their code like weavers, using a lattice of punched holes. The cards themselves were fussy and fragile. Ethereal information was at the mercy of its paper substrate, coded in a language only experts could understand.
