Population-based studies have consistently shown that our diet has an influence on health. Therefore, the aim of our study was to analyze differences between different dietary habit groups in terms of health-related variables. The sample used for this cross-sectional study was taken from the Austrian Health Interview Survey AT-HIS 2006/07. In a first step, subjects were matched according to their age, sex, and socioeconomic status (SES). After matching, the total number of subjects included in the analysis was 1320 (N = 330 for each form of diet – vegetarian, carnivorous diet rich in fruits and vegetables, carnivorous diet less rich in meat, and carnivorous diet rich in meat). Analyses of variance were conducted controlling for lifestyle factors in the following domains: health (self-assessed health, impairment, number of chronic conditions, vascular risk), health care (medical treatment, vaccinations, preventive check-ups), and quality of life. In addition, differences concerning the presence of 18 chronic conditions were analyzed by means of Chi-square tests. Overall, 76.4% of all subjects were female. 40.0% of the individuals were younger than 30 years, 35.4% between 30 and 49 years, and 24.0% older than 50 years. 30.3% of the subjects had a low SES, 48.8% a middle one, and 20.9% had a high SES. Our results revealed that a vegetarian diet is related to a lower BMI and less frequent alcohol consumption. Moreover, our results showed that a vegetarian diet is associated with poorer health (higher incidences of cancer, allergies, and mental health disorders), a higher need for health care, and poorer quality of life. Therefore, public health programs are needed in order to reduce the health risk due to nutritional factors.

Studi basati sulla popolazione hanno dimostrato a sufficienza che la dieta influenza il nostro stato di salute. L’obiettivo della nostra ricerca, pertanto, era analizzare le differenze tra gruppi con abitudini alimentari diverse secondo parametri di valutazione dello stato di salute. Il campione utilizzato per questa analisi trasversale è stato scelto dall’Austrian Health Interview Survey. Come primo passo, i soggetti sono stati raggruppati secondo l’età, il sesso e lo status socio-economico (SES). Dopo la classificazione, il numero totale dei soggetti presi in esame era 1320 (Il campione iniziale era composto di 15.474 persone, n.d.t.): 330 per ciascun tipo di regime alimentare, ovvero a) vegetariani; b) carnivori con dieta ricca di frutta e verdura; c) carnivori con ridotto consumo di carne; d) carnivori con elevato consumo di carne. L’analisi delle variabili sono state eseguite valutando i seguenti parametri dello stile di vita: stato di salute (stato di salute percepito, condizioni fisiche, numero di patologie croniche, rischio cardio-vascolare), cure mediche (terapie mediche, vaccinazioni, esami medici di prevenzione) e infine qualità della vita. Inoltre, le differenze emerse in seguito alla presenza di 18 patologie croniche sono state analizzate attraverso il Chi-square Test. Nel complesso, il 76,4% dei soggetti erano donne, il 40% avevano meno di 30 anni, il 35,4% tra i 30 e i 49 anni ed il 24% aveva più di 50 anni. Il 30,3% del campione aveva un SES basso, il 48,8% medio e il 20,9% un SES alto. I nostri risultati hanno rivelato che il regime vegetariano è correlato ad un Indice di Massa Corporea (BMI) più basso e un consumo di alcolici meno frequente. Inoltre, i nostri dati mostrano che il regime vegetariano è associato ad uno stato di salute peggiore (maggiore incidenza di tumori, allergie e disordini della salute mentale), una maggiore richiesta di cure mediche ed una peggiore qualità della vita. Per queste ragioni, si ritengono necessari interventi sulla salute pubblica per ridurre i rischi derivanti da fattori nutrizionali.

Science news and science writing is increasingly popular. There are increasing numbers of people getting into science, which is great. But science is a huge field, with many different disciplines and areas, all of which can go into quite painstaking detail. Obviously there’s a lot to talk about, which can prove daunting to the newly interested, so good science writing is important.

However, science and science news/reporting/writing is the work of humans, and humans are rarely 100% logical. So, to step into the world of science is to step into years/decades/centuries of disputes, controversies, unfamiliar habits, power-plays, strange politics and countless other things that manifest in science articles and could befuddle the unwary reader. What can we do about this?

One option is to adopt an approach from the world of film. Every film released to the public comes with a classification, to warn potential viewers of the type of content to expect without spoiling the actual thing itself, so the viewer can go in prepared. These classifications now come with explanations, like “contains mild peril”. Wouldn’t it be useful to adopt something similar for science articles, to give newcomers some grasp of what they’re looking at? So here’s a potential classification system for science writing. It’s a bit more complex admittedly, and unlike films, multiple classifications can be applied to a single piece. How like science, to be so uncertain.

L’informazione e le pubblicazioni di carattere scientifico stanno guadagnando popolarità. Un numero sempre maggiore di persone sembra interessarsi alla scienza, e questa è un’ottima cosa. Ma la scienza è un pianeta sterminato, fatto di molte discipline diverse, ognuna delle quali può addentrarsi in dettagli piuttosto minuziosi. E’ ovvio che ci sia moltissimo di cui parlare e che può essere scoraggiante per i nuovi adepti; per questo è importante scrivere bene di scienza. Ma la scienza e tutto quanto si scrive su di essa è il risultato di un lavoro umano e ben di rado l’essere umano è razionale al 100%. Entrare nel mondo della scienza significa quindi addentrarsi in anni/decenni/secoli di dispute, controversie, mentalità inconsuete, giochi di potere, strumentalizzazioni politiche e innumerevoli altre questioni individuabili negli articoli scientifici, che possono confondere l’ignaro lettore. Cosa si può fare?
Una delle possibilità è adottare un approccio simile a quello usato dal cinema. Ogni nuovo film in uscita viene classificato in base al genere, in modo che il potenziale spettatore sia informato in anticipo sul tipo di contenuti che può aspettarsi anche senza conoscere la trama, e sia in qualche modo preparato. Questo genere di classificazioni è accompagnato di solito da una breve spiegazione del tipo “contiene scene violente”. Non sarebbe utile applicare qualcosa del genere agli articoli scientifici, per fornire qualche indicazione in più agli inesperti su cosa stanno per leggere?
Ecco quindi un potenziale sistema di classificazione per i testi scientifici. Va detto che il sistema risulta un tantino più complesso e, a differenza dei film, ad un singolo testo possono corrispondere più di una classificazione. E' proprio della scienza, essere così poco...certa.
