I am a professional, certified translator with, as of 2017, five years’ experience in the industry.
I am certified by the Association of Indonesian Translators in the English-Indonesian and Indonesian-English language pairs.
I translate from English, French, Italian, and German, but English is the only foreign language I am confident enough to translate into, and even then whether or not I would accept a translation job depends on the subject matter and the difficulty and quality of the source material.
I specialize the most in legal and literary translation, but from time to time I also receive translation jobs in other fields, provided that the source material is not so technical and detailed that it would require knowledge and experience of an actual expert in the subject matter.
I co-own and co-manage Penerbit Oak, an independent publisher based in Jogjakarta focusing on publishing translated literary works, most of which I translate myself from English, French, and German. Do keep in mind that these are publication-quality translation; you can’t expect to survive in a market as harsh as the Indonesian book industry without producing quality works.
As you can probably imagine, with such work experience, my strength lies in rendering foreign language text with all its linguistic nuances and complexities into natural and readable Indonesian. Due to my experience of translating oft-arcane and seldom straightforward literary works, I feel confident in stating that, at least in terms of grammar and vocabulary, no source text within my specialty is too difficult to understand for me.
While almost never receiving formal education in any subject related to translation or language in general, I am someone who you would call a language enthusiast and I learn most of what I know about language by rigorous self-study. That, of course, does not make me any less competent or knowledgeable than formally-educated Indonesian translators.
My personality is almost perfectly suited to translation job, in the sense that I am perfectly fine with working for many hours at my multi-monitor PC, and actually able to enjoy researching new information to make the best translation possible.
