Viaggiare nelle campagne di Grosburg nelle fredde notti d'inverno non sarebbe piacevole né sicuro in condizioni normali, tanto meno con un tempo simile.
Eppure quell’esile figura di donna procedeva a grandi passi nella notte buia e tempestosa, come se il cammino davanti a sé fosse tracciato chiaramente e non avesse altro desiderio che raggiungere la sua meta il più in fretta possibile. Stringeva tra le braccia un prezioso fardello, almeno a giudicare da come lo tenesse stretto e dal modo in cui cercasse di proteggerlo dalla pioggia.
«Uee, Uee!»
«Sta buono, Altair, non aver paura. Siamo quasi arrivati, vedrai che andrà tutto bene.»
Avvolto tra panni spessi e morbidi, retto da mani sicure quanto delicate, vi era un neonato spaventato. La donna doveva avere un motivo più che valido per esporlo a simili intemperie.
Un rumore di passi pesanti, che affondavano tra le pozze d'acqua disseminate sul terreno, mise in allarme la donna, che affrettò il passo terrorizzata.
Improvvisamente un lampo, seguito da un forte boato, illuminò per un istante la notte. Delle case sparute s’intravidero a breve distanza, proprio davanti a lei.
La donna accelerò il passo; il terrore straziava i lineamenti delicati del suo volto mentre osservava quelle case ormai vicine, vedendole come il luogo in cui lei e suo figlio avrebbero potuto trovare la salvezza da un pericolo imminente.
Un rumore insolito, come un turbinio sinistro, si udì nell'aria.
La donna cadde rovinosamente: un’ascia da lancio l'aveva colpita alle gambe, lacerandole le carni. Nonostante la sorpresa e il dolore, riuscì a girarsi per cadere su un fianco, evitando di fare del male al piccolo che portava tra le braccia. Un secondo lampo illuminò la notte, rivelando l'arrivo del misterioso assalitore.
«Non puoi scappare, donna. Incasserò la taglia sulla tua testa!»
La donna si rimise faticosamente in piedi.
Translation - English That night, the moon and the stars were hidden by a heavy blanket of clouds. The rain had been beating down now for several hours, and gave no hint of wanting to lessen. Traveling in the countryside of Grosburg on cold winter nights would not be pleasant nor safe in normal conditions, let alone in weather like this.
And yet that slender figure of a woman advanced with long strides in the dark and stormy night, as if the path in front of her was clearly laid out and she had no desire other than reaching her destination as quickly as possible. She clutched a precious bundle in her arms, at least judging from how tightly she held it and the way she tried to protect it from rain.
"Uee, uee!”
"Be good, Altair, don’t be afraid. We are almost there, you’ll see, everything will be fine."
Wrapped in thick soft cloths, held by hands both sure and delicate, was a frightened newborn. The woman had to have a really good reason to expose it to such weather.
The sound of heavy steps, sinking into the puddles of water scattered across the ground, alarmed the woman, and she quickened her pace terrified.
Suddenly a flash of lightning, followed by a loud rumble, lit the night for a moment. Some small houses could be seen a short distance away, right in front of her.
The woman walked even faster; terror tormented the soft features of her face as she looked at those houses, close now, seeing them as the place where she and her son could find salvation from imminent danger.
An unusual noise, like a menacing flurry, could be heard in the air.
The woman fell head over heels: a throwing hatchet had hit her legs, tearing the flesh. Despite the surprise and pain, she managed to turn around and fell onto one side, to avoid hurting the litttle one she carried in her arms. A second lightning flash lit up the night, revealing the arrival of the mysterious assailant.
"You can't escape, woman. I will cash in the bounty on your head."
The woman laboriously returned to her feet.

Source text - Italian A breve distanza dalla cima del monte Amytaar, nell’antico tempio dedicato a Sion, il Dio del Sole, erano da tempo calate le tenebre.
Dopo il passaggio degli alti sacerdoti di Runell, lo spodestato Dio della Morte, e del loro seguito di Demistificatori, non vi era rimasta anima viva.
Prima di morire, il saggio sacerdote Gabriel aveva sigillato l’altare, erigendo un’interdizione sacra che aveva perdurato anche dopo la sua morte, impedendo ai sacerdoti di Runell di impossessarsi della Perla del Potere che vi era nascosta.
Gabriel non aveva potuto opporsi oltre, e il suo corpo giaceva ormai privo di vita ai piedi dell’altare, a far compagnia a quelli dei suoi compagni; ma non erano i soli ad aver sacrificato le loro vite per un bene più grande.
Il corpo martoriato di un Cavaliere Arcano, colui che un tempo rispondeva al nome di Antares Morningstar, pendeva da una parete, bloccato al muro da lunghi pugnali conficcati nelle mani.
Il capo era ricurvo, e in terra, ai suoi piedi, un’ampia e densa macchia nera continuava lentamente ad allargarsi.
Solo le tenebre e il silenzio riempivano le stanze di quello che, una volta, era un tempio dedicato al Sole e alla vita. D’un tratto, un rumore impercettibile ruppe il silenzio.

Plick, plick.
Delle gocce di sangue caddero copiose dal corpo del cavaliere, andando ad accrescere ulteriormente la pozza sul pavimento.
Un tremito improvviso corse lungo il suo corpo.
Alzò lentamente la testa, cercando di aprire gli occhi, ma la sua vista era talmente annebbiata, e il buio così profondo, che non riuscì a distinguere nulla.
Il vivido dolore alle mani fu un’amara, incoraggiante sensazione: se il suo corpo era ancora in grado di percepirlo, significava che era ancora vivo.
Il portone di legno massiccio si spalancò di colpo: una luce intensa e improvvisa penetrò, facendosi strada all’interno del tempio come se si contendesse ogni centimetro in una strenua lotta contro le tenebre.
I suoi occhi distinsero chiaramente quella luce, e non solo loro: era come se il suo corpo la sentisse e la reclamasse per sé, come se ne fosse attratto e volesse raggiungerla a ogni costo, ma il freddo acciaio conficcato nelle sue mani, non faceva che impedirglielo.
Inarcò la schiena digrignando i denti fino a farli stridere, mentre cercava di far scorrere i palmi lungo la lama. Arrivato all’elsa, tentò di chiudere le dita su di essa, senza ottenere alcun risultato.
A quel punto, respirò più profondamente che poteva, poi diede un violento colpo per strappare via i pugnali dal muro. Il destro cedette, mentre il sinistro rimase ancora ben piantato, ma non per molto: non potendo da solo sorreggere il peso del corpo, si staccò anch’esso dalla parete, smembrandogli il palmo.
Antares cadde pesantemente a terra, incapace di muoversi. Sapeva perfettamente che non vi fosse alcuna possibilità di rimettersi in piedi, non con quelle ferite e dopo tutto il sangue perso, eppure il richiamo della luce fu talmente forte da spronarlo ad andare avanti in ogni modo.
Cominciò faticosamente a strisciare verso il portone spalancato, lasciando sul pavimento un vistoso sentiero vermiglio. Quando riuscì finalmente a lambire il bagliore provò un senso di calore che lo spronò a muoversi ancora. Nonostante i muscoli vibrassero convulsi sotto lo sforzo, si trascinò fino a varcare la soglia.
Quel chiarore caldo e accogliente avvolse completamente il suo corpo martoriato, ormai quasi privo di vita. Le ferite cominciarono a risanarsi, senza lasciare alcuna traccia della loro dolorosa presenza, mentre la vita e l’energia magica tornavano a scorrere dentro di lui.
In poco tempo, ritrovò la forza di rialzarsi, mentre la misteriosa luce andava attenuandosi.
Le navate del tempio, annerite dalla magia oscura, tornarono a essere trasparenti, permettendo ai raggi del sole di penetrare nuovamente all’interno.
«Perché?» si chiese stupito. «Perché Sion mi ha salvato la vita?»
Era certo che nessuno, a parte un Dio, sarebbe potuto intervenire a quel modo, ma non comprendeva perché l’avesse fatto solo allora e non prima, quando avrebbe potuto salvare Gabriel e i sacerdoti.
Comunque stessero le cose, non intendeva certo sprecare questa occasione standosene immobile a rimuginare, specialmente quando suo figlio e i suoi compagni potevano essere in pericolo.
Si voltò e rientrò di corsa nel tempio, dirigendosi verso l’altare.
Giunto di fronte al corpo di Gabriel, si chinò, affermando con voce colma di gratitudine e cordoglio: «La tua magia ha perdurato sin dopo la tua morte, avresti dovuto essere tu l’alto sacerdote al posto di Lanthan. Perdonami, ma adesso devo prendere la perla: Dissolutum Magicus!»
L’interdizione sacra si dissolse all’istante, come se non volesse affatto opporsi alla magia del mago.

Not a soul remained alive after the passage of the high priests of Runell, the deposed God of Death, and their following of Demystifiers. Before his death, the wise priest Gabriel had sealed the altar, erecting a sacred ban that had endured even after his death, preventing Runell’s priests from stealing the Pearl of Power which was hidden there.
Gabriel had not been able to oppose them any longer and his body, now devoid of life, was lying at the foot of the altar keeping company with his companions; but they were not the only ones who had sacrificed their lives for a greater good.
The tortured body of an Arcane Knight, who had once answered to the name of Antares Morningstar, hung from a wall, fixed to it by long daggers driven into his hands.
His head was bent, and on the ground at his feet a large thick black stain slowly continued to spread.
Only darkness and silence filled the rooms of what was once a temple dedicated to the Sun and life. Suddenly an imperceptible noise broke the silence.
"Hmm ... "
Plick, plick.
Drops of blood fell copiously from the knight’s body, adding to the puddle on the floor.
A sudden tremor ran through his body.
He slowly lifted his head, trying to open his eyes, but his sight was so blurred and the darkness so profound that he was unable to discern anything.
The vivid pain in his hands was a bitter, encouraging feeling: if his body was still able to perceive it, it meant that he was still alive.
The door of solid wood suddenly opened wide: a bright unexpected light penetrated, making its way through the interior of the temple as if it was contesting every inch in a vigorous fight against the darkness.
His eyes clearly distinguished that light, and not just them: it was as if his body felt it and wanted it for itself, as if it were drawn to it and wanted to reach it at all costs, but the cold steel driven into his hands prevented him.
He arched his back, clenching his teeth until they rasped, as he tried to slide his palms along the blade. When they got to the hilt, he tried to close his fingers on it, but to no avail.
At that point, he breathed as deeply as he could, then with a violent blow tried to tear the daggers from the wall. The right one gave way, but the left remained still well embedded, though not for much longer: unable to support the weight of his body by itself, it came away from the wall, mutilating his palm.
Antares fell heavily to the ground, unable to move. He knew very well that there was no way he could get back on his feet, not with those wounds and after all the blood he had lost, yet the lure of the light was so strong that it encouraged him to go forward as best he could.
He began to slide with difficulty toward the open door, leaving a conspicuous crimson trail on the floor. When he finally managed to meet the glow of light, the sensation of warmth spurred him on to move again. Although his muscles were trembling convulsively from the effort, he dragged himself across the threshold.
That warm and welcoming light wrapped around his battered body, now almost without life. The wounds began to heal, leaving no trace of their painful presence, and life and magical energy returned to flow inside him.
In a short time he found the strength to get to his feet again, as the mysterious light began to fade.
The naves of the temple, obscured by dark magic, became transparent again, allowing the sun's rays to penetrate once more.
"Why?” he wondered amazed. "Why has Zion saved my life?"
He was certain that nobody, apart from a God, could intervene in that way, but he did not understand why he had done so now and not before, when he could have saved Gabriel and the priests.
Whatever the reason, he certainly did not intend to squander this opportunity by staying there to wonder about it, especially when his son and his companions could be in danger.
He turned and ran back into the temple, heading toward the altar.
As he came to Gabriel’s body, he bent down, saying in a voice filled with gratitude and sorrow: "Your magic has lived on after your death, you should have been the high priest instead of Lanthan. Forgive me, but now I have to take the pearl: Dissolutum Magicus!”
The sacred ban disintegrated instantly, as if it had no intention of opposing the magic of the magician.
Antares inspected the altar until he found what he was looking for: the Pearl of Power. He placed it inside the locket that he already had around his neck, certain that the magic of ban and protection enclosed in it would protect him from its negative influences.
He felt only a slight tremor, but did not not feel any distress and had no visions, as had happened instead to his son Altair and his companions.
He would have liked to take care of the bodies of Gabriel and the priests, but did not know how long he had been unconscious and what had happened to the others in the meantime.
He suddenly felt a strong sense of oppression and malaise, which gave him a bad premonition. He hoped it was only the apprehension and concern of a father for his son.
"Itineris Mens!"
He teleported himself to maestro Dayku’s dwelling and rushed in without permission. The teacher and his young student were extremely surprised to see him.
"Antares! You are safe thanks to the Gods!" exclaimed Dayku.
"Where are the others, maestro? What happened?"
"Sit down, my friend. Give me time to tell you how things went."
The magician glanced behind the teacher, noticing the portal that led to the plane of shadow: it was sealed with sacred runes.
"The portal! You have sealed it!"
He went closer to examine it better. He looked at it carefully and ran a hand across it; it took only a few moments to realize that the portal had been sealed forever.
"Where is my son? Where are they all?" he asked impatiently.
"They went into the plane of shadows to fight against the God Runell and his priests, Nomyss and Aceyos."
Dayku looked down, taking his time to find the right words.
Antares, however, had no intention of giving him any time.
"I want to know what happened!" he yelled exasperated, shaking the elderly teacher vigorously.
Luna was about to intervene, but the man’s angry expression froze her.
"They defeated Runell, but they are dead, they are all dead! Altair was the last to die, I clearly felt his vital force and Runell’s fade away almost at the same moment."
"My son, and his companions... dead?" asked the knight, shaking his head insistently, as if those words were nothing but a trivial lie.
"Antares, you don’t know how much it saddens me to have to give you the news of their sad fate."
He continued to shake his head, as if denying a terrible truth could somehow serve to change the course of a destiny that had already been fulfilled.
Then a doubt and a question crept into his tormented mind: "If they really did defeat Runell, then why did you seal the portal?"
"There was no way we could recover their bodies, or bring them back to life. Keeping the portal open could have been dangerous; now, though, it is sealed forever, so their lives will not have been lost in vain. The sole survivor was Alexander: I had not allowed him to go because I had realiewd what his real nature was, and I was clearly aware of the corruption of his race in him."
"They did not have to go, they should not have taken on such a responsability, it was our task!" he shouted, as he tried unsuccessfully to curb an outburst of pain and anger.
"They told me Gabriel was dead and I was afraid that you had been killed too. I insisted that I should deal with it with my disciples, but Altair and Sefiro were adamant! I had no other choice than to trust them. You should be proud of your son’s sacrifice!”
Antares’s face transformed.
"I sacrificed my life for the good of Grosburg, I lost Athalya, the woman I loved, and Mack, my best friend... how can you even begin to think that I could be happy about my son’s sacrifice?"
He turned and went quickly toward the door.
"Antares! What are you doing?”
"I'm going to get him back, I'm going to get them all!"
He left the teacher’s house, was the words of warning which were echoing behind him disappeared into thin air.
He was ready to leave that place with the help of magic, when he saw the unmistakable figure of the Mystic approaching.

Source text - Italian Prima di iniziare a parlare della splendida Roma, vorrei fare una brevissima introduzione al fine di spiegarvi come e perché nasce l’idea di scrivere una mini guida low cost. Leggendo questa premessa potrete capire se posso esservi d’aiuto.
Non so voi, ma io quando organizzo un viaggio mi stresso parecchio. I primi due scogli da superare sono la ricerca incrociata del volo più economico e la caccia all’hotel centrale e allo stesso tempo accessibile per il mio portafoglio. Personalmente, però, è la scelta dei monumenti da visitare quella che mi crea più problemi. Io inoltre vado sempre alla ricerca dei ristoranti che propongono menù turistici e che si trovano vicino alle zone di interesse archeologico che ho deciso di vedere.
L’idea di mettere per iscritto le tappe del mio viaggio a Roma, nasce proprio da queste mie esigenze. Ho sempre desiderato una guida che pianificasse in modo completo le giornate del mio viaggio low cost, evitandomi stress e facendomi risparmiare un sacco di tempo. Di fatto, però, non l’ho mai trovata.
In cosa si distingue dalle altre la mia mini guida?
Prima di tutto ho deciso di evitare di caricare le immagini per non appesantire troppo il file e per rendervi la lettura più fluida e diretta. D’altronde le potete facilmente reperire su internet. Vi basta andare su Google e le trovate in un attimo.
Non voglio dilungarmi né annoiarvi: il mio proposito è quello di aiutarvi, in modo semplice e diretto, a organizzare al meglio il vostro soggiorno a Roma.
Qualche esempio di ciò che troverete nella guida.
Vi indicherò alcuni nomi di hotel e B&B adiacenti alla stazione Termini, tralasciando tutte le altre zone di Roma. Perché prendo in considerazione soltanto la zona della stazione Termini? Semplice: perché soltanto a Termini passano entrambe le linee di metropolitana A e B che collegano tutti i principali siti e monumenti di Roma. Se prendete in mano una comune guida turistica, non troverete questi preziosi consigli ed escamotage che invece io posso offrirvi perché parlo per esperienza diretta.
Ho inoltre pianificato il vostro percorso in modo tale che possiate raggiungere i vari monumenti a piedi. Roma purtroppo è molto trafficata, caotica e disordinata. I pullman spesso sono in ritardo e sono quasi sempre stipati di gente. Questo è l’unico aspetto che non amo di questa fantastica città.
Quando viaggio, purtroppo mi trovo sempre a macinare chilometri alla ricerca dei menù turistici vicini ai luoghi di interesse. Puntualmente perdo tempo e mi stresso. Ecco allora che ho pensato di segnalarvi i ristoranti vicini ai monumenti, dove non andrete mai a spendere più di 15 euro per un menù completo.
Translation - English Before I start talking about the splendid city of Rome, I would like to give you a very brief introduction to explain how and why I had the idea to write a low cost mini-guide. After reading this introduction you will understand if I can be of help.
I don't know about you, but when I’m organizing a trip I tend to stress a lot. The first two hurdles to be overcome are the cross-research for the cheapest flight and the hunt for the hotel which must be centrally located and at the same time fits my budget. In my case, though, it is the choice of monuments I wish to visit that creates problems for me. Furthermore, I always try to seek out restaurants that offer tourist menus and that are close to the areas of archaeological interest that I have decided to see.
The idea of putting into writing the stages or legs of my visit to Rome arose exactly because of these requirements. I have always wanted a guide that fully plans each day of my low-cost trip, helps me to avoid stress and saves me a lot of time. The fact is, though, that I have never found one.
What distinguishes my mini-guide from others?
First of all I decided not to upload any pictures so as not to make the file too heavy and make reading easier and free flowing. On the other hand you can easily find pictures on the internet. You just go to Google and you’ll find them in a flash.
I don’t wish to dwell on this nor bore you: my purpose is to help you, in a simple and straight-forward way, to organize your stay in Rome and get the best out of it.
Some examples of what you will find in the guide.
I shalll give you the names of some hotels and B&Bs near the Termini railway station, and ignore all the other areas of Rome. Why do I take into account only the area around Termini? Simple: because it is only at Termini that both metro lines, A and B, stop and connect all the main sites and monuments of Rome. If you look at the usual tourist guides, you won't find these valuable tips and tricks that I, on the other hand, can offer you, because I speak from personal experience.
I have also planned your itinerary in such a way that you can reach the various monuments on foot. Unfortunately, Rome is very busy, chaotic and disorderly. Tourist coaches are often late and are almost always packed with people. This is the only aspect that I dislike of this fantastic city.
When I travel, I always find myself grinding kilometers in search of tourist menus close to places of interest. As usual I waste time and become stressed. That is why I thought I’d let you know about the restaurants close to monuments, where you are never going to spend more than 15 euro for a full menu.

Source text - Italian La rigiro continuamente fra le mani come fosse un rosario, e ogni tanto lancio un’occhiata a mamma che cucina le fave con la semola e l’uovo. Il sole che penetra dalla finestra rende ancora più luminoso il bianco della busta, mentre le mie dita seguono il contorno rialzato dello stemma della Gold Apple School: un albero verde con tante mele dorate appese.
Non ci speravo più di tanto un mese fa, quando ho inoltrato la domanda di ammissione. Eravamo in Sardegna, era il cinque agosto e pioveva. Ogni estate mio padre affitta la casa a Stintino. Abbiamo provato a dirgli che ci piacerebbe vedere anche altri mari della Sardegna, oppure, che ne so, la Puglia, la Calabria, la Sicilia…ma lui è fissato con Stintino! E siccome è un avvocato, riesce sempre ad avere l’ultima parola. Anche mia madre lo è, infatti entrano sempre in competizione su tutto, ma non so perché gliela dia sempre vinta sulla questione “stessa spiaggia, stesso mare.”
Quella mattina, mentre io e papà eravamo spaparanzati sotto il sole, mia madre leggeva un libro e mia sorella Debora parlava con Badu, un giovane vucumprà che puntualmente si fermava a corteggiarla, il cielo si è improvvisamente rannuvolato e ci ha colto un forte acquazzone, costringendoci a correre verso casa. Il pomeriggio si prospettava alquanto noioso. La pioggia era cessata ma il sole si era spento, quindi di tornare al mare non se ne parlava proprio. Loro tre decisero di comune accordo di vedersi un film in salotto, mentre io pensai che in fondo quello potesse essere il momento propizio per fare la cosa proibita. Dopo aver addotto il tipico pretesto del mal di testa, me ne andai in camera, mi chiusi a chiave e accesi il computer con le mani che tremavano per l’eccitazione. Ormai era diventato un pensiero fisso, una vera e propria fisima che non lasciava spazio ad attenuanti o ripensamenti. Mancava soltanto il momento giusto per attuare il piano, quindi mi dissi “O adesso, o mai più.” Fu così che digitai su Google le parole chiave Gold Apple School iscrizione. Cliccai sul link del sito e La primavera di Vivaldi partì a bomba facendomi sobbalzare e imprecare. Azzerai immediatamente il volume e cliccai su skip intro. Avevo già visto miliardi di volte le facce sorridenti degli allievi con la “toque blanche” in testa, le aule maestose, alcune addirittura affrescate, l’imponente portone nero principale con le due grosse mele dorate a fianco, la fontana con le statue delle ninfe e il giardino tutt’intorno, le foto dei laboratori, dei professori, delle camere da letto colorate, il massiccio bancone di legno della reception dietro il quale tre centraliniste fanno finta, o forse lo fanno per davvero, di telefonare mentre sorridono a chi ha scattato la foto. Ogni volta che a Roma mi ritrovavo sola in casa, ammiravo a bocca aperta quelle foto, fantasticando sul mio trionfale ingresso alla Gold Apple School.
Non c’era tempo da perdere per eventuali ripensamenti, perciò cliccai su iscrizione e completai la domanda di ammissione in quindici minuti. Mi sorpresi a non indugiare neanche un secondo sulle voci Accetto e Iscrivimi. Ma non era soltanto la paura di essere colta in flagrante da un membro della mia famiglia a infondermi una certa fretta e sicurezza. Era piuttosto la voglia impellente di mettere fine a quel pensiero che oramai mi tormentava da tempo, anche se nutrivo allo stesso tempo poche speranze di essere effettivamente presa. L’ammissione o il rifiuto ad essere ammessi alla prova selettiva dipendono da due fattori: il voto della maturità e il menù che si sceglie di presentare. Alla domanda occorre infatti allegare il curriculum studiorum e tre ricette: un primo, un secondo e un dolce. Possono avere accesso alla prova massimo dieci persone per ogni Stato, di età non superiore ai ventisei anni, di cui poi ne vengono selezionate cinque. Soltanto per gli inglesi il limite di accesso è di venti persone per dieci posti.

Every summer my father rents the house in Stintino. We’ve tried to tell him that we’d like to see other seaside places in Sardinia, or, I don’t know, maybe Puglia, Calabria, Sicily... but he is fixated with Stintino! And since he’s a lawyer, he always manages to have the last word. That morning, as dad and I lazed about in the sun, my mother reading a book and my sister Debora chatting with Badu, a young street pedlar who regularly stopped to court her, the sky clouded over without warning and we were caught in a heavy downpour forcing us to run back home. The afternoon looked like being extremely boring. The rain had ceased but the sun had disappeared, so we wouldn’t be going back to the beach. The three of them agreed among themselves to watch a movie in the living room, while I’m thinking that it might be the right moment to do the forbidden thing.
Using the typical excuse of a headache, I went to my room, locked the door and turned on the computer, my hands trembling with excitement. It had become a fixation by now, a real obsession that left no room for mitigating circumstances or second thoughts. The only thing missing was the right moment to put the plan into action, so I said to myself “It’s now or never.” That was the reason I typed into Google the key words Gold Apple School enrolment. I clicked on the link to the site and Vivaldi’s Spring started like a shot, making me jump and curse. I immediately turned the volume all the way down and clicked on Skip intro. I had already seen the smiling faces of the students with the “toque blanche” on their heads a million times, the majestic classrooms, some of them even frescoed, the imposing black main door with two golden apples at the side, the fountain with the statues of nymphs and the surrounding garden, the pictures of the laboratories, the teachers, the colored bedrooms, the massive wood reception desk behind which the three telephone operators pretending, or maybe they’re really doing it, to make phone calls as they smile at the person taking the photo. Every time I found myself alone at home in Rome, I gaped in admiration at those photos, imagining my triumphant entry to the Gold Apple School.

Tutto quello che finora è sempre stato pensato e detto sull’ente in quanto tale nel suo insieme, essa lo fa apparire alla luce del pensiero sul valore» (cfr. ivi, p. 128). Ciò che appariva valere incondizionatamente e oggettivamente in sé – secondo il discorso di Heidegger – risulta avere, in Nietzsche, la sua origine e il suo ambito di validità nella volontà di potenza. I valori sono, in questo senso, «risultati di determinate prospettive di utilità per il mantenimento e il potenziamento di forme di dominio» (cfr. ivi, p. 100). «Con ciò – secondo Heidegger – è detto che l’essenza dei valori ha il suo fondamento in “forme di dominio”. Nato e cresciuto sulla Terra, non avrebbe mai pensato di abbandonarla per recarsi in quelle fragili comunità stipate in poche miglia quadrate di leghe polimetalliche.
Per l'umanità non c'era luogo più bello, accogliente e giusto del pianeta Terra, almeno nel sistema solare. Seppure nella seconda metà del ventunesimo secolo il riscaldamento globale aveva causato danni devastanti, si poteva felicemente dichiarare che quella fosse un'epoca lontana. Nel 2182, gli undici miliardi di persone che popolavano il pianeta si erano adeguate a convivere con i nuovi livelli degli oceani. Per di più l'energia era prodotta quasi esclusivamente da fonti rinnovabili. Non si poteva asserire che l'umanità avesse risolto i suoi problemi, ma nel complesso il dottor Davis sentiva di poter affermare che quello fosse un bel mondo in cui vivere.

Vi immaginate la delizia di fantasticare la prossima vacanza alle Maldive mentre si girovaga fra negozi di alta moda e lussuose profumerie? Oppure un freddo inverno, in cui al mattino si ozia sotto le coperte tiepide in una dimora alla fragranza di croissant appena sfornati? E invece, niente. La sveglia trillante senza pietà ti trascina in un mondo in cui ti riconosci in quello zombie che vagabonda fra le pareti di casa. Ci sono mattine che confondo la portafinestra del balcone con l'uscita della camera da letto. Per fortuna la persiana avvolgibile tirata giù mi impedisce sempre di ritrovarmi svestita in bella mostra. Più di una volta mi sono addormentata in bagno o, meglio, in talune occasioni non è accaduto. Così finisce sempre che mi preparo in fretta e furia, con una mano impegnata a reggere un'improbabile tazza di caffè e l'altra la matita o il rimmel di turno. Una parvenza di trucco ci vuole. Per il tempo che ci impiego, devo dire che me la cavo.
Poi c'è il secondo step: ricordarsi dove diamine ho parcheggiato l'automobile. Roma non è il massimo per le questioni traffico e posteggio. Sovente mi tocca lasciare la macchina a mezzo miglio di distanza e mai allo stesso posto. Quando poi la caffeina inizia a fare effetto, mi si riaccende il cervello e mi ritrovo magicamente in macchina. Scaldati, motore bello, penso ogni volta che fa un freddo boia, come oggi.

In pochi lassi di tempo la terra smossa si tramutò in un mare di fango in mezzo a cui operai e poliziotti si ritrovarono a sguazzare, simili a tanti marinai in impermeabile impegnati a condurre in porto un peschereccio sotto una burrasca.
Rivoli d'acqua presero a scorrere ai loro piedi minacciando lo scavo, mentre gli uomini cercavano di arginare la depressione utilizzando le pietre del crollo per proteggere il lavoro degli investigatori chini sotto un paio di ombrelli neri.
Una berlina argentata risalì la strada sterrata che attraversava la piccola valle, fermandosi a pochi metri dal punto in cui un'ala pericolante dell'antico maniero aveva ceduto agli attacchi del tempo disseminando la vegetazione incolta di pietre bianche e travi di legno nero in mezzo a una montagna di calcinacci.
Con un'imprecazione a mezza voce, il detective Liz Mannino scese dall'auto affondando le scarpe in una pozza. Un giovane in divisa la salutò dall'interno di una volante e fece l'atto di uscire.
Mannino sollevò la mano. - Trovo la strada da sola. - disse tra i denti, maledicendosi per non aver optato quella mattina per un paio di jeans e scarponcini, al posto del tailleur blu.
Arrivò allo scavo con i capelli fradici incollati alla fronte e al collo, e i collant macchiati fino alle ginocchia. Si passò una mano sugli occhi. - Che cosa avete trovato? - gridò sopra il rumore assordante dell'escavatore.
Uno scheletro. - rispose l'uomo che reggeva uno degli ombrelli sull'esperto della scientifica.
Mannino cercò la via più sicura per raggiungerli, e scivolò per qualche passo verso il basso, accettando senza indugio la mano offertale in aiuto.
L'acqua sta riempiendo questa fossa di merda. - la informò l'agente che la sosteneva - stiamo cercando di mettere in piedi una copertura provvisoria. -
Chi l'ha trovato? - chiese chinandosi sotto gli ombrelli per vedere.
Una coppietta alla ricerca di avventura. Dopo il crollo deve essere stato esposto in parte dai lupi… da queste parti ce ne sono ancora.
Translation - English A fine rain as cold as ice had begun to fall sideways over the site. In less than no time the loose dirt became a sea of mud with workmen and police officers wallowing in the middle of it like so many sailors in waterproofs trying to bring a fishing boat into port during a raging storm.
Trickles of water began to slide by at their feet threatening the excavation, as the men tried to dam the depression using stones from the collapsed building to protect the work of the investigators bent under a couple of black umbrellas.
A silver sedan went up the dirt road that crossed the small valley, stopping a few meters from the point in which an unstable wing of the ancient manor house had succumbed to the attacks of time, showering the wild vegetation with white stones and black wooden beams in the midst of a mountain of rubble.
Cursing under her breath, detective Liz Mannino got out of the car, her shoes sinking into a puddle. A young man in uniform greeted her from inside a patrol car and made as if to get out.
Mannino lifted her hand. – I’ll find my own way. - she said through her teeth, berating herself for not having opted that morning for a pair of jeans and trekking boots, instead of a blue suit.
She reached the dig with her hair glued to her face and neck, and her tights muddied up to the knees. She rubbed a hand over her eyes. - What have you found? – she shouted over the deafening noise of the excavator.
A skeleton. - answered the man who was holding one of the umbrellas over the forensics expert.
Mannino searched for the safest way to reach them, slipping a few steps as she went down, and readily accepting the helping hand offered to her.
The water is filling this trench with shit. – said the agent who was supporting her – we’re trying to put a temporary cover in place. -
Who found it? – she asked bowing under the umbrellas to see.
A couple of kids looking for adventure. After the collapse it must have been partly exposed by wolves… there are still a few around these parts.

Source text - Italian L'odore di erba bagnata permeava ancora l'aria, a più di un'ora di distanza dal violento scroscio di pioggia che aveva allentato l'insolita calura di quella noiosa giornata di marzo.
Vans fissò la protezione in cuoio alla sua scure e se la poggiò in spalla senza curarsi di nascondere il suo disappunto.
«Ti abituerai presto a questo lavoro, ragazzo!» sbraitò un corpulento uomo di mezza età.
Lui rispose con un cenno della testa e un sorriso poco convinto.
Osservando l'uomo notò come il suo aspetto ricalcasse alla perfezione la figura stereotipata del classico taglialegna: robusto, folta barba scura e tipica camicia a scacchi rossa e nera.
«In fondo questo mestiere non è poi tanto male, inoltre ti aiuta a rimanere in forma» insistette un secondo uomo, più giovane ed esile dell'altro.
«Già, c'è sicuramente di peggio. Però non vi aspettate che mi faccia crescere la barba» replicò Vans, mentre adocchiava ansioso il furgoncino che li avrebbe ricondotti in città. Lo raggiunse e depositò nel vano cargo la scure e i suoi attrezzi.
«Ci siete tutti?» domandò l'autista sporgendo la testa dal finestrino.
«Mancano Lenny e Carson» rispose il barbuto.
Subito un’accorata invocazione di soccorso provenne dalla boscaglia, non molto distante da loro.
L'autista spense il motore e scese dal veicolo, mentre i due taglialegna accorsero in direzione delle grida, esortando Vans a fare altrettanto. Il cacciatore, raccolta la scure, indirizzò uno sguardo torvo al bosco e raggiunse i suoi compagni di corsa.
Translation - English The smell of wet grass still permeated the air more than an hour after the violent downpour of rain that had brought relief from the unusual heat of that boring March day.
Vans attached the leather protection to his ax and placed it on his shoulder without bothering to conceal his disappointment.
"You’ll soon get used to this work, boy!" barked a corpulent middle-aged man.
He answered with a nod of the head and an unconvinced smile.
Observing the man he noted how his appearance fitted to perfection the stereotyped figure of the classic woodcutter: robust, thick dark beard and typical red and black check shirt.
"After all, this job isn’t so bad, and furthermore it helps you stay in shape" insisted a second man, younger and slimmer than the other.
"Yep, there’s definitely worse. But don’t expect me to grow a beard" retorted Vans, as he looked anxiously at the van that they would take them back to town. He went to it and deposited the ax and his tools in the cargo compartment.
"Are you all here?" asked the driver, sticking his head out the window.
“Lenny and Carson are missing," replied the bearded man.
An emotional cry for help was heard at that same moment, coming from the bush not very far from them.
The driver turned off the engine and descended from the vehicle, while the two woodcutters rushed in the direction of the cries, exhorting Vans to do likewise. The hunter collected his ax, looking grimly towards the bush, and ran to join his co-workers.

The villages that make up the Cinque Terre (Five Lands) sit on a rocky terrain, but it became "land" for the local people with the construction of artificial terraces, thus making it possible to develop the wine-growing and agricultural activities we see there today.
