CO2 makes up 390 ppm (0.039%)* of the atmosphere, how can such a small amount be important? Saying that CO2 is "only a trace gas" is like saying that arsenic is "only" a trace water contaminant.
Small amounts of very active substances can cause large effects.
Some Examples of Important Small Amounts:
He wasn't driving drunk, he just had a trace of blood alcohol; 800 ppm (0.08%) is the limit in all 50 US states, and limits are lower in most other countries).
Don't worry about your iron deficiency, iron is only 4.4 ppm of your body's atoms (Sterner and Eiser, 2002).
Ireland isn't important; it's only 660 ppm (0.066%) of the world population.
That ibuprofen pill can't do you any good; it's only 3 ppm of your body weight (200 mg in 60 kg person).
The Earth is insignificant, it's only 3 ppm of the mass of the solar system.
Your children can drink that water, it only contains a trace of arsenic (0.01 ppm is the WHO and US EPA limit).
Ozone is only a trace gas: 0.1 ppm is the exposure limit established by the US National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends an ozone limit of 0.051 ppm.
A few parts per million of ink can turn a bucket of water blue. The color is caused by the absorption of the yellow/red colors from sunlight, leaving the blue. Twice as much ink causes a much stronger color, even though the total amount is still only a trace relative to water.
"Traces" of CO2
Although percentage is a convenient way to talk about the amount of gas in the atmosphere, it only tells how much is there relative to everything else; percentage doesn’t give an absolute amount.
For example, you have trouble breathing on top of Mount Everest even though the atmosphere still contains 21% oxygen just like at sea level. The percentage isn't important, you need a certain number of oxygen molecules with each breath, regardless of how much or little they are diluted by inert gases. At an altitude of 8000 m the whole atmosphere is diluted.
The total number of CO2 molecules above our heads in the atmosphere is more important than their percentage in the atmosphere. If the amount of inert nitrogen gas (N2) in the atmosphere were to be cut in half then the percentage of CO2 would jump (to about 600 ppm; 0.06%) without a change in the absolute amount of CO2 and no substantial change in the energy balance of the Earth. Adding a huge number of energy-absorbing CO2 molecules to the atmosphere doesn’t change its percent number very much, only because it's being added to a vast inert N2 background.
We know the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere has increased because we have measured it. We know the climate has warmed from current and historical data. The link between increasing greenhouse gases and increasing temperature is clear: just as ink makes water more colored, CO2 makes the atmosphere more absorbing. The extra CO2 in our atmosphere is trapping energy that would otherwise escape to space. The measured global warming matches closely with the amount of energy trapped from the greenhouse gases added to the atmosphere.
A doubling of the trace molecule CO2 from 280 ppm to 560 ppm is still a trace, but just like with arsenic, the difference between a small trace and a larger trace is fatal.
* To convert ppm to percentage divide by 10,000.

Description
On 12 July 2000, an Airbus A310 being operated by Hapag Lloyd on a non scheduled passenger flight from Chania to Hannover declared an emergency due to fuel shortage and, after making an en route diversion to Vienna in day VMC, crash landed short of runway 34. None of the 151 occupants were injured during the impact but 26 suffered minor injuries during the subsequent evacuation. The aircraft was damaged beyond economic repair by the effects of the impact but there was no fire.
Investigation
An Investigation was carried out by the Accident Investigation Unit of the Austrian Federal Office of Transport and was able to make use of recovered FDR and CVR data.
It was established that the touchdown had been made with the landing gear locked down. The first ground contact had occurred some 660 m prior to the runway 34 threshold, slightly the right of the extended centerline and thereby avoiding the runway lighting masts. The left main landing gear collapsed soon afterwards and the aircraft had then continued to skid through a series of minor aerial and lighting obstructions before finally coming to a stop close to the southernmost taxiway to the runway.
Fuel still on board after the crash did not leak away and was found to be equivalent to the design specification for ‘unusable fuel’.
It was established that after take off from Chania with the Captain as PF, the crew had received indications that landing gear retraction had not been successful. The required ECAM actions and consultation with related ‘abnormal and emergency procedures’ followed but gear locked up could not be achieved and it had been decided that as a reduced rate of climb was not going to be a problem for the climb, the flight would continue towards the destination with the gear down and subject to monitoring of fuel use. It was recognised that the intended destination could not now be reached and various alternatives – Stuttgart (STG), Munich (MUC) and eventually Vienna (VIE) were considered in conjunction with the Company Operations Centre. Vienna ultimately became the planned diversion.
It was noted that an hour before the crash, a calculation of the expected residual fuel by the First Officer showed that it was below 1900kg, the level at which operator procedures made a diversion to the nearest suitable aerodrome. At this juncture, it would have been possible to reach Zagreb (ZAG) in 10 minutes but this was not considered. Nine minutes later, the planned diversion to Vienna was confirmed and a series of requests for direct routing began to be made to ATC. Ten minutes later, whilst still under the control of Zagreb ACC, Vienna ACC ATC were advised on box 2 that unless a direct approach could be given, the flight would need to divert to Graz, but no indication of any actual risk was communicated. The request was granted and the flight continued towards Vienna. After a further 8 minutes, the “LT-Fuel low level” warning light came on 131 nm from Vienna and six minutes after that, after earlier proposals from the First Officer to do so had been ‘deferred’ by the Captain, an emergency was declared.
Some 11 minutes prior to the eventual crash landing, it was noted that both crew members had assessed the situation as “unpromising”. Visual contact with Vienna was acquired and a visual approach to runway 34 was approved by ATC. At 11:26, both engines failed due to fuel exhaustion some 12 nm from Vienna with the aircraft intentionally positioned above the ILS GS profile. The crash landing occurred 8 minutes later, at 11:34.
The analysis made by the investigators particularly focused on the incomplete awareness of the flight crew on procedures for continuation of the flight with the gear down including the use of the FMS for monitoring of fuel used / remaining and on the series of decisions which led to the attempt to reach Vienna despite a progressive recognition that the fuel on board was unlikely to make this option a safe prospect.
The aircraft commander was found to have been very experienced, the First Officer was relatively new to professional flying and had obtained his A310 type rating a little over 7 months prior to the accident. The training records of both were found to be exemplary.
The organisational, physiological and psychological precursors to what happened were examined in some detail. It was suggested that “Insufficient knowledge of the basic method of operation and performance limitations of the FMS in certain situations because of a lack of documentation and training caused the pilot to incorrectly evaluate flight parameters and resulted in incorrect decisions concerning the piloting of the aircraft” and also that “Restricting the simulator training to landing gear problems on domestic flights helped produce negative training effects. On the one hand, the unilateral training scenario resulted in methodism, i.e. the creation of a standard plan to deal with the task”.
Overall, it was concluded that “The captain's decision to continue the flight to VIE rather than, as provided for in the airline's regulations, to proceed to the nearest aerodrome (which at that point was ZAG), is explained by the phenomenon called ‘pressing on’. It is often found in air accident situations, and is determined by the joint effects of the emotion components (motivation to succeed or defence against fear) and the cognitive structuring of tasks”.
The investigation also proposed that an additional reason for ‘pressing on’ to VIE was the Captain’s preference for personal ‘success’ - achieving a diversion to VIE - rather than ‘failure’ which would not have been matched by a successful diversion to ZAG. It was concluded that “the captain's decision (to continue to VIE) was based on a consideration not of the safety risks but of the likelihood of success and failure”. It was also proposed that “because of the intensive mental effort required for the landing at VIE, achieving this scenario (became) subjectively more probable than a scenario which (had) not been so carefully thought through”.
In respect of the landing gear retraction problem which had initiated the sequence of events, it was found that although a locking washer in the right landing gear actuation cylinder had been secured by its retaining nut in such a way as to prevent it turning, it had not been engaged in the rod end, which had allowed the rod to work loose. The extended working length to beyond AMM limits had then prevented the landing gear leg from retracting.

Расследование
Расследование проводилось Отделом расследований Федерального ведомства транспорта Австрии, использовались восстановленные данные бортовых средств объективного контроля.
Установлено, что приземление было совершено с выпущенным шасси. Первый контакт с землей имел место примерно за 660 м до торца полосы, немного правее продолжения оси ВВП 34, что позволило избежать столкновения с осветительными мачтами взлетно-посадочной полосы. Левая опора шасси вскоре после касания разрушилась, самолет продолжал движение, совершив серию небольших прыжков и контактов с препятствиями на земле, прежде чем достиг точки окончательной остановки недалеко от самой южной РД, ведущей к ВПП.
Утечки топлива после крушения не произошло, его количество не превышало величины невырабатываемого остатка согласно спецификации.
Было установлено, что после взлета от города Ханья с КВС в качестве пилотирующего пилота, экипаж зафиксировал отказ уборки шасси. Были предприняты необходимые действия в соответствии с процедурами для полетов в особых и аварийных условиях, но уборку шасси выполнить не удалось, и было решено, что, поскольку уменьшение скорости набора высоты не является критичным, полет будет продолжен к пункту назначения с выпущенным шасси при условии контроля над использованием топлива. Было признано, что запланированный пункт назначения не может быть достигнут, совместно с операционным центром компании рассматривались различные альтернативы - Штутгарт (СТГ), Мюнхен (MUC) и Вена (VIE). В конечном счете, было принято решение лететь на Вену.
Было отмечено, что расчет ожидаемого остатка топлива, выполненный вторым пилотом за час до аварии, показал величину ниже 1900 кг, то есть ниже уровня, при котором требуется уход на ближайший подходящий аэродром. На данном этапе можно было достичь Загреба (ZAG) за 10 минут, но этот вариант не рассматривался. Девять минут спустя был подтвержден уход на Вену, были сделаны первые запросы к службе УВД о прямых маршрутах. Через десять минут, еще в зоне контроля центра УВД Загреба, центр УВД Вены получил рекомендацию, согласно которой при невозможности предоставить прямой заход на посадку полет следует перенаправить в Грац, но никаких сведений о фактической степени риска передано не было. Запрос был удовлетворен, и полет продолжился на Вену. Еще через 8 минут, за 131 милю до Вены, сработало сигнальное табло "LT мало топлива", и через шесть минут после этого был подан сигнал бедствия. Предыдущие предложения второго пилота подать сигнал бедствия были "отложены" КВС.
Было отмечено, что примерно за 11 минут до аварийной посадки оба члена экипажа оценивали ситуацию как "бесперспективную". Визуальный контакт с Веной был установлен, визуальный подход к ВВП 34 был утвержден УВД. В 11:26 на расстоянии около 12 миль от Вены из-за выработки топлива остановились оба двигателя, самолет при этом намеренно находился выше глиссады ILS GS. Аварийная посадка произошла 8 минут спустя, в 11:34.
В ходе расследования особое внимание обращалось на неполную информированность экипажа о процедурах продолжения полета с выпущенным шасси, включая использование системы управления полетом для мониторинга количества использованного/оставшегося топлива, и на ряд решений, которые привели к попытке достичь Вены, несмотря на растущее осознание того факта, что количество топлива на борту делает маловероятной возможность воспользоваться этим выбором с соблюдением требований безопасности.
Было установлено, что командир воздушного судна имеет очень большой летный опыт, второй пилот относительно недавно начал профессиональную карьеру летчика и получил допуск для типа A310 чуть более чем за 7 месяцев до аварии. Профессиональная подготовка обоих летчиков была признана образцовой.
Организационные, физиологические и психологические предпосылки случившегося были рассмотрены более подробно. Сделан вывод, что "Недостаточное знание основ функционирования и ограничений, присущих системе управления полетом в определенных ситуациях, из-за нехватки документации и недостаточного обучения, привело к тому, что пилот неправильно оценивал параметры полета, и в результате принимал неверные решения в отношении пилотирования самолета", а также, что "Ограниченность тренажерной подготовки к полетам в условиях проблем с шасси на внутренних рейсах способствовала негативному воздействию на обучение. С одной стороны, ограниченный сценарий обучения ведет к шаблонности, т.е. к созданию стандартного плана, чтобы справиться с задачей".
В целом был сделан вывод, что "решение капитана продолжить полет к VIE, а не к ближайшему аэродрому (которым на тот момент был ZAG), как это предусмотрено в правилах авиакомпании, объясняется феноменом "продавливания". Он часто встречается в ситуациях воздушный инцидентов, и определяется совместным воздействием эмоциональных компонентов (мотивация на успех или защита от страха) и когнитивной структуризацией задач.
Расследование также предположило, что дополнительным поводом для "продавливания" полета на VIE было восприятие КВС факта принятия решения об уходе на VIE в качестве его личного «успеха» - в противоположность "провалу", который не мог быть компенсирован успешной посадкой в ZAG. Был сделан вывод, что "решение КВС (продолжать полет с маршрутом на VIE) было основано не на рассмотрении угроз для безопасности, а на основе вероятности успеха или неудачи". Также высказано предположение, что "из-за интенсивных умственных усилий, необходимых для посадки в VIE, достижение такого сценария (стало) субъективно более вероятным по сравнению со сценарием, который (был) не столь тщательно продуман".
В отношении проблемы с уборкой шасси, которая инициировала последовательность событий, приведших к авиационному происшествию, было обнаружено, что хотя стопорная шайба в силовом цилиндре правой стойки шасси и была зафиксирована от поворота ее гайкой крепления, она не находилась в зацеплении с концом штока. Это позволяло штоку иметь люфт. Увеличенный рабочий ход, выходящий за пределы допуска РЭ, препятствовал уборке стойка шасси.
