English to Polish: Diseases of the retina
Source text - English The term FUNDUS is used to describe that part of the posterior segment of the eye viewed ophthalmoscopically : it involves the head of the optic nerve (the optic disc or optic papilla) and the retina.
There is considerable interspecies variation in the ophthalmoscopic appearance of the fundus and within a species individual variations in normality canlead to diagnostic confusion. Familiarity with these normal variations is essential if the clinician is to avoid erroneous diagnosis.
THE RETINA
The retina can be regarded as an extension of the CNS via the optic nerve : it is a derivative of the forebrain. Its function is to convert environmental light stimuli into modified nerve impulses and via its ganglion cells and their axons transmit these impulses to the optic radiations of the visual cortex. Based on function the retina can be divided into two layers, the retinal pigment epithelium and the neuroretina. The retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) is the outermost layer of the retina and is attached to the choriocapillaris. It is vital to neuroretinal function in that it provides essential metabolite transport to the outer layers of the neuroretina and removes the spent outer segment utilised in the process of phototransduction. The neuroretina is responsible for the conversion of light into nerve impulse (phototransduction) and the modification of the nerve impulse as it passes to the optic nerve. It is divided into nine histologically recognisable layers : the visual cell layer, the outer limiting membrane, the outer nuclear layer, the outer plexiform layer, the inner nuclear layer, the inner plexiform layer, the ganglion cell layer, the nerve fibre layer and the inner limiting membrane.
EXAMINATION OF THE RETINA
The fundus is examined clinically by using ophthalmoscopic techniques, retinal function assessed electrophysiologically using the electroretinogram (ERG) and ultrasonography is used to evaluate the posterior segment when the ocular media are opaque.
Translation - Polish Terminu dno używa się do opisu części tylnej oka, widzianej oftalmoskopowo.
Istotną rolą warstwy nerwowej stanowi transport metabolitów do warstw zewnętrznych i usuwanie uszkodzonych w procesie fototransdukcji części warstwy.

Experience
Years of experience: 13. Registered at ProZ.com: Jun 2014.
I am freshly minted doctor of veterinary medicine. Soon, in October this year I will start my PhD studies at Warsaw University of Life Sciences researching toxoplasmosis in wild boars.
Last four years I worked part-time as a translator at different veterinary conferences. I translate lectures consecutively and simultaneously as well as translate research papers, abstracts, presentations etc.
Almost all of my experiences as a vet were international (South Africa, India, UK, USA among others), thus my approach to translation is a very practical one with a deep understanding of context in with vet texts and research is done.
