Στέκει στην κορυφή του λόφου της Ακρόπολης, επιβλητικός και άκρως εντυπωσιακός. Ο ναός του Παρθενώνα, που χτίστηκε προς τιμήν της θεάς Αθηνάς στα μέσα του 5ου αιώνα βασισμένος σε έναν παλαιότερο που υπήρχε στο ίδιο σημείο, είναι έργο δύο σπουδαίων δημιουργών της εποχής, των αρχιτεκτόνων Ικτίνου και Καλλικράτη. Σχεδόν βέβαιη είναι η εμπλοκή στον γλυπτό διάκοσμο, του Φειδία. Τα αρχιτεκτονικά –κι όχι μόνο- τεχνάσματα, καθιστούν το μνημείο μοναδικό στο είδος του διαχρονικά, με το «δέσιμο» του Δωρικού και Ιωνικού ρυθμού, τη χρήση Πεντελικού μαρμάρου, και τις αρμονικές αναλογίες, να αποτελούν κύρια γνωρίσματά του. Πέραν της αρχιτεκτονικής ευφυίας ωστόσο, το εσωτερικό του ναού χαρακτηριζόταν από εξαιρετική πρωτοτυπία, με το άγαλμα της Αθηνάς Παρθένου να προκαλεί θαυμασμό. Ο Παρθενώνας μετά τον 5ο αι. μ.Χ. μετατράπηκε σε ναό αφιερωμένο στην Αγία Σοφία αρχικά κι αργότερα στην Παναγία και στα χρόνια της Τουρκοκρατίας έγινε τζαμί. Το 1687, κατά την πολιορκία της Ακρόπολης από τον Μοροζίνι, μεγάλο τμήμα του κατέρρευσε από ανατίναξη, ενώ στις αρχές του 19ου αι., με τη διαρπαγή του γλυπτού διάκοσμου από το λόρδο Έλγιν, μέρος των γλυπτών εκλάπη και βρίσκεται έως σήμερα στο Βρετανικό Μουσείο. Αυτή τη στιγμή, βρίσκονται σε εξέλιξη έργα συντήρησης και αποκατάστασης του μνημείου.
Ελάχιστοι γνωρίζουν πως ο Παρθενώνας είναι χτισμένος με αντισεισμικό τρόπο και τα τμήματά του ενώνονται με λιωμένο μολύβι, στις –με κατάλληλο τρόπο- διαμορφωμένες ενώσεις των μαρμάρων του. Επίσης, στο νέο μουσείο της Ακρόπολης έχετε τη δυνατότητα να δείτε το βίντεο του Κ. Γαβρά για την ιστορία του ναού.

Si trova sulla cima della collina dell’Acropoli, imponente e altamente impressionante. Il tempio del Partenone, costruito in onore della dea Atena a metà del 5° secolo, costruito sulla base di un tempio precedente ubicato nello stesso punto, è opera di due grandi creatori dell’ epoca, gli architetti Iktinos e Kallikratis. Quasi certo è l’intervento di Fidia nella decorazione scolpita. I trucchi dell'architettura -e non solo- rendono il monumento unico nel suo genere e nel tempo, mentre la combinazione degli stili Dorico e Ionico, l’ uso del marmo da Penteli e le proporzioni armoniose sono le sue caratteristiche principali. Oltre all'intelligenza architettonica, l'interno del tempio era caratterizzato da una originalità eccezionale, con la statua di Minerva Vergine a provocare ammirazione. Il Partenone dopo il 5° sec. d.C. fu trasformato in una cattedrale dedicata a Santa Sofia inizialmente, successivamente a Notre Dame e durante gli anni dell'occupazione turca fu adibito a moschea. Nel 1687, durante l'assedio dell'Acropoli da Morosini, una grande sua parte crollò a causa di un’esplosione, mentre all'inizio del 19° secolo i fregi furono sottratti da Lord Elgin, e parte della decorazione scolpita è stata portata via e si trova tuttora al British Museum. Al momento, si svolgono dei lavori di manutenzione e restauro del monumento.
Pochissimi sanno che il Partenone è costruito in modo antisismico e che I pezzi da cui è formato sono uniti con piombo fuso, modulato -in modo appropriato- alle congiunzioni dei suoi marmi. Inoltre, al nuovo museo dell'Acropoli si può vedere il video del regista Gavras sulla storia del tempio.
