In the first place, the fine projections make the angle of the water drop contacting the surface larger. The protrusions formed on the surface (lotus leaf has countless protrusions on it; translator noted) also have countless projections and similar effects take place there. Because of this double hydrophobicity, the surface of lotus leaf is superhydrophobic.
