English to Greek: Alfred Lord Tennyson - The Lady of Shalott
General field: Art/Literary
Detailed field: Poetry & Literature
Source text - English
On either side the river lie
Long fields of barley and of rye,
That clothe the wold and meet the sky;
And thro' the field the road runs by
To many-tower'd Camelot;
And up and down the people go,
Gazing where the lilies blow
Round an island there below,
The island of Shalott.
Translation - Greek
Στου ποταμού τις όχθες πλάι
Χρυσό μανδύα η γη φοράει,
Που τα ουράνια ακουμπάει˙
Κι απ’ το χωράφι ο δρόμος πάει
Στο πυργωμένο Κάμελοτ.
Κι ο κόσμος που περνά κοιτά:
Τα κρίνα ο άνεμος φυσά
Στο νησάκι χαμηλά
Που λέγεται Σαλότ.

My heart leaps up with joy to see
Virtue and simplicity
Applauded, rewarded and glorified
With heartfelt warmth on every side!
Albert, the teachers from the school,
Miss Podd, Miss Turtle,
dear Miss Butler and Miss Toole,
Are proud of you, proud of you,
as I am too,
And profoundly stirred by your renown.
Albert! Albert! Albert!
They send this little gift to you
For rainy afternoons...
Foxes' Book of Martyrs
In two fine volumes, illustrated,
Inscribed to you appropriately,
and dated.

Planting the bulbs:
The planting time of the bulbs depending on the condition of the areas varies from early August up to the middle of September, 2500 to 3000Kg per hectare varies upon the coarseness of the land. Prior to planting the onions, the brown color layer of them must be separated till the last thin layer remains. After plotting the land (usually length 30m and width 10m) in the rows in a deep hole 15 to 25cm with the plow, the bulbs are planted, within each hole 1 to 3 onions apart 15 up to 20cm from each side must be performed.

Bio

I first came into contact with the art of translation in 2009, during my
undergraduate studies in English Language and Literature, and quickly became
fascinated by the act of rendering one language and culture into another. The
course I attended included numerous compulsory linguistic modules, as well as
many translation ones. Among the latter there were a few entirely on literary
translation, such as Literary Translation and Literary Translation Criticism. I
was distinguished in the former with the grade of 9,5 out of 10, while my
translation of the first stanzas of Alfred Lord Tennyson’s ‘The Lady of
Shalott’ was awarded a perfect ten, the only one in a class of 30 students. My
personal module selection also ensured that half of the modules I attended were
on English and American literature, giving me extra insight on the methods and
variables involved in translating Literature. My MA studies in Medieval Studies
have also familiarised me with a plethora of Middle English texts, whose
translation into modern English is one of my favourite pastimes, as is the
translation of operatic libretti texts from German and Italian into English, a
genre with which I have been acquainted through my 8 years of studies in Opera
and singing. I have recently successfully completed 2
out of 3 units of the IoLet Diploma in Translation, specialising in Literature
and Law, with the third unit pending in January 2019. I have been a freelance
translator for the past 5 years, having worked on a variety of projects,
including website translation, localisation, transcreation, subtitling,
literary translation and others. I have worked with translation companies and
agencies, such as Global Voices UK, Zoo Subtitles, and Word Lights
Translations. My first two contributions in printed publications are also coming
up next year (Academic article in “Echoes of Ancient Greek Literature in the
Work of J. R. R. Tolkien”, Kedros, exp. 2020, and co-editing of the Greek
edition of “Reaching Through Resistance: Advanced Psychotherapy Techniques”,
Allan Abbass, Seven Leaves Press, 2015, exp. 2020).

I am very passionate about literature, and about the correct and natural
rendering of one language into another. English has always been a second native
language to me, and having been distinguished in my fluency from a very early
age, I find expressing ideas and translating texts from and into English -
albeit demanding - very exciting and satisfying. My meticulous manner of work,
and my professional attitude towards achieving the highest possible linguistic
equivalence between texts guarantee the quality of the work that I produce. I
am available to translate fast and reliably website, literary (prose, poetry
and drama), libretto, as well as any other type of non-technical or
semi-technical text, with high-quality results, at reasonable rates.
I await your proposals, suggestions and queries.
