Source text - French Les frères, belle-soeurs et cousins du major n'avaient pas complètement tort lorsque d'un commun accord ils le déclarèrent fou. Mais ils se trompaient sur les causes. Ce n'est pas d'une maladie contractée aux Indes qu'il souffrait, mais de la catastrophe historique qui s'etait abbatue sur sa personne et qui se nommait perte de pouvoir, d'identité, de reconnaissance. Ce retour sans gloire dans la maison de ces ancêtres avec une solde qu'il jugait indigne de son service irréprochable dans les Indes si chères au coeur de sa reine le rongeait plus que la lèpre ou la malaria.
Translation - English The brothers, sisters-in-law and cousins of the Major were not completely wrong when they mutually agreed that he was insane. But they were wrong about the root of this madness. Translation - English Show the patient the twelve objects and for each object ask:
“What is this called?” or
“What is the name of this object?”
A different answer from the name given further down must be marked as correct if it is a name which could be used by someone without dementia, from the same cultural background as the patient. Descriptions of the object, semantic or phonemic paraphrasing must not be marked as correct (e.g. “cutter” instead of “scissors”). If the object is not correctly named, do not tell the patient the correct word, in order to avoid the effect of learning.

Normalement, le consommateur devrait se réjouir. Enfin est sorti, dimanche, au Journal officiel, le décret visant à pousser les restaurants à indiquer si leurs plats sont « faits maison » ou pas (lire ci-contre). Dès mardi, les restaurateurs devront s’y conformer, en apposant un logo « fait maison » sur leur carte. Un progrès pour la transparence et, au delà, sur la qualité de l’alimentation ?
Et bien non, la situation promet d’être pire encore. Le logo « fait maison » va embrouiller tous les esprits. Car les lobbies de l’agroalimentaire sont passés par là. Et à lire le texte de ce décret, un restaurant pourra afficher fièrement le logo « fait maison » tout en servant des plats à base de sauces en poudre, de viande hachée industrielle ou de poissons surgelés.
Translation - English The “home-made” law doesn’t cut the mustard
Under ordinary circumstances consumers should be overjoyed. On Sunday, the official journal of the French government finally released a law which aims to spur restaurants into indicating whether or not their meals are “home-made” (see document opposite). As of Tuesday, restaurants will have to comply with this law by adding a “home-made” logo to their menus. Surely this should be an improvement in the transparency and therefore the quality of food?
It isn't. The situation is guaranteed to get worse; the “home-made” logo will be a disappointment to everyone because the food-processing industry lobbies have been involved. A reading of the text reveals that restaurants will be able to proudly bare the “hand-made” logo whilst serving meals comprised of powdered sauces, factory minced meat and deep-frozen fish.
