Source text - English These days, thanks to cell phones and computers, it's easier than you'd think to spend a day without speaking to a soul other than Siri or the pizza delivery guy. But interacting with others is something we should all be more conscious of. Indeed a new study finds that isolation and loneliness threaten longevity as much as obesity.
Researchers from Brigham Young University in Utah looked at nearly 35 years of studies on how loneliness, social isolation and living alone can affect your lifespan and what they found was startling. “We need to start taking our social relationships more seriously," the study's lead author Julianne Holt-Lunstad said in a statement. "The effect of this is comparable to obesity, something that public health takes very seriously."
Data from around 3 million participants found that, on average, loneliness, isolation and living on your own can increase your risk of premature death by 26, 29 and 32 percent, respectively.
We know that the lack of social connections, especially if not by choice, can be a difficult experience emotionally and psychologically. But research has also shown the other adverse effects of loneliness. One University of Chicago study pointed out that loneliness can raise your levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which can lead to an increased risk of stroke and heart attack. What's more is the effect of loneliness on longevity was shown to be nearly as strong as that of living in poverty.
Brigham Young researchers say the results are not to be taken lightly, as across the nation we're seeing the highest rates of people living alone in the past century. "With loneliness on the rise, we are predicting a possible loneliness epidemic in the future,” they said. According to the Census Bureau, 27 percent of households were single-person households, up from just 17 percent in 1970.
The link between shorter lifespans and lack of social ties was seen regardless of sex or geographic location. The researchers did find, however, that for people under 65, the negative effects were even stronger. It also didn't matter whether people were socially excluded or had no one to turn to, or if they just chose to spend more time alone.
But, there is some good news: The researchers say that while the lack of socializing can be bad for you, working on increasing your friendships and connections can be good for your health.

Source text - Portuguese Os Estados Unidos poderão abrir uma embaixada em Havana antes de 10 de Abril, quando se inicia a Cimeira das Américas, no Panamá. É essa a esperança do Presidente, Barack Obama.
“A minha esperança é que estejamos em condições de abrir uma embaixada, e que parte do trabalho inicial de base esteja feito”, disse Obama numa entrevista à Reuters. Mas isso não significa que as relações sejam “completamente normais”, porque, após uma ruptura de meio século, “há muito trabalho a fazer”.
Na sequência de 18 meses de contactos secretos, a 17 de Dezembro de 2014 os EUA e Cuba anunciaram a intenção de restabelecer relações diplomáticas, cortadas em 1961. Desde então realizaram-se duas rondas de contactos com o objectivo de conseguir uma “normalização” das relações.
A última foi na sexta-feira passada, e a chefe do departamento de assuntos dos EUA no Ministério dos Negócios Estrangeiros de Cuba, Josefina Vidal, disse que o Governo de Havana está disposto a restabelecer relações diplomáticas logo que Washington manifeste a intenção de retirar Cuba da lista de países que apoiam o terrorismo. Foi a primeira vez que Cuba reconheceu publicamente estar disposta a reatar relações diplomáticas ainda antes de ser retirada da lista, sublinha a Reuters.
“Se dentro de algumas semanas recebermos uma notificação satisfatória sobre o assunto da retirada de Cuba da lista de países que apoiam o terrorismo, penso que estaremos prontos para começar a discutir sobre como formalizar o restabelecimento de relações”, disse Josefina Vidal numa entrevista publicada por Cubadebate, um site próximo do Governo cubano.
O Departamento de Estado norte-americano está a terminar uma avaliação sobre se Cuba deve ou não continuar nesta lista, juntamente com o Irão, o Sudão e a Síria. A ilha dos Castro entrou lá em 1982, por apoiar guerrilhas antiocidentais durante a Guerra Fria. Mas agora está a usar a sua influência juntou do grupo guerrilheiro colombiano FARC para realizar conversações de paz.
“Este é um processo à parte. Não é uma negociação, é uma avaliação rigorosa, feita ao abrigo de um mandato do Congresso”, frisou o secretário de Estado, John Kerry. E, uma vez terminada, tem de ser submetida ao Congresso e tem um período de 45 dias para entrar em vigor – o que faz com dificilmente possa entrar em vigor antes da Cimeira das Américas, que se vai realizar nos dias 10 e 11 de Abril.
Washington e Havana estão apostados no sucesso – e no alto valor histórico – desta Cimeira das Américas. Daí a disponibilidade manifestada por Cuba em restabelecer relações diplomáticas normais ainda antes da cimeira, onde tanto Obama como o Presidente cubano, Raúl Castro, deverão estar presentes.
Ambos os países têm actualmente diplomatas nas respectivas capitais, mas não embaixadas. Desde 1977 têm apenas o que chamam "secções de interesses".
Para Obama, os efeitos da abertura já estão a fazer-se sentir em Cuba. “Desde o nosso anúncio, o Governo cubano começou a discutir como reorganizar a sua economia para acolher investimento estrangeiro. Após 50 anos de uma política que não deu certo, precisávamos de tentar algo de novo.”
Quanto à União Europeia, retoma nesta quarta-feira as negociações iniciadas em 2014 para um novo acordo político e de cooperação que acabe com o veto institucional vigente desde 1996, diz o El País. Nesse ano, Bruxelas adoptou a posição comum, promovida pelo então presidente do Governo espanhol, José María Aznar, que submetia qualquer diálogo com Havana a avanços no capítulo dos direitos humanos.

Following 18 months of secret contacts, in December 17th 2014 the USA and Cuba announced the intention of re-establishing diplomatic relations, cut off since 1961. Since then, two rounds of contacts have taken place with the purpose of "normalizing" relations.
The last one took place last Friday, and the head of US Affairs at the Cuban Foreign affairs Ministry, Josefina Vidal, said Havana Government is willing to re-establish diplomatic ties as soon as Washington manifests an intention of removing Cuba from the list of countries that support terrorism. It was the first time Cuba publicly recognized its willingness to rekindle diplomatic relations even before it is crossed off the list, highlights Reuters.
"If within a few weeks we get satisfactory notification about the issue of removing Cuba from the list of countries that support terrorism, I think we will be ready to start discussing the way to formalize the re-establishment of relations", said Josefina Vidal in an interview published by Cubadebate, a website close to the Cuban government.
The US Department of State is finishing an assessment on whether or not Cuba should continue on the list, along with Iran, Sudan and Syria. The Castro island was put there in 1982 for supporting anti-western guerrillas during the Cold War. But now it is using its influence with the Colombian guerilla group FARC to initiate peace talks.
"This is a separate process. It's not a negotiation, it is a thorough assessment, under a Congress warrant", emphasized State Secretary John Kerry. And, once completed it will have to pass through Congress and it has a period of 45 days to come into effect - which means it will be hard for it to come into effect before the Summit of the Americas, which will take place on the 10th and 11th of April.
Washington and Havana are set on the success - and high historical value - of this Summit of the Americas. Hence the availability manifested by Cuba in re-establishing normal diplomatic relations even before the summit, where both Obama and the Cuban President Raúl Castro, shall be present.
Both countries currently have diplomats in the respective capitals, but not embassies. Since 1977, they have only so-called "sections of interest".
To Obama, the effects of the openness are already being felt in Cuba. "Since our announcement, the Cuban government started to discuss how to reorganize their economy in order to receive foreign investment. After 50 years of a policy that did't work, we needed to try something new".
As for the European Union, this Wednesday will resume negotiations started in 2014 to make a new political and cooperation agreement that will end the institutional veto in force since 1996 , says [spanish daily] El País. That year, Brussels adopted the common position, promoted by then president of the Spanish government José María Aznar, submitting any dialogue with Havana to a progress in the chapter of Human Rights.
