Spanish to English: Speech on the occasion of the beatification of Oscar Romero
Translation - English Priest:
The Lord never abandons his people and he is attentive to their needs. He sees oppression, he hears his children’s cries of pain and he comes to their aid to free them from oppression and bring them to a new land, a wide and fertile land flowing with milk and honey. Just as one day he chose Moses to guide his people in his name, so he continues raising up shepherds to feed their flocks with knowledge and wisdom. In this beautiful Central American country bathed by the waters of the Pacific Ocean, the Lord granted a zealous bishop who, loving God and serving his brothers and sisters, became the image of Christ the Good Shepherd.
In a time when coexistence was difficult, he knew how to guide, defend and protect his flock, remaining faithful to the Gospel and in communion with the whole Church. His ministry was distinguished by particular attention to the poor and marginalized. At the moment of his death, as he was celebrating the holy sacrifice of love and reconciliation, he was given the grace to identify fully with the one who laid down his life for his sheep.
The voice of the newly-declared Blessed still resounds today to remind us that the Church with a vocation to her brothers and sisters is the family of God.
