בוקר. אני בתוך מונית בדרכי לעבודה. לנהג קוראים הרצל. ההורים רצו לקרוא לו בהתחלה עזרא אבל חששו שהשם לא מתאים לתינוק, אז קראו לו הרצל. הוא בן 44, נשוי ויש לו חמישה ילדים. כשנולדה אשתו ההורים של שלה קראו לה חדוה, אבל הוא קורא לה נבלה. חדוה עכשיו בהריון לילד שישי. הרצל מאוד שמח מזה, כמעט כמו ששמחים לפני עקירה כירורגית.

אני תוהה ביני לבין עצמי אם לענות לו או להמשיך להעמיד פני עגל ולבהות בעננים דרך זגוגית החלון. בהצלחה לא גדולה אני מנסה לסדר לעצמי את המחשבות בראש ולבסוף אני מבין שאין לי כל כך הרבה מחשבות על גוף האישה בהריון. זה אומנם קצת מפתיע שאין לי מחשבה או דעה נחרצת על משהו אבל באמת שבכל הקשור לאישה בהריון אני לא רואה שום הבדל בינה לבין אישה רזה וקלילה ללא הורמונים וחשק לקרם חלווה בשתיים לפנות בוקר. כשאתה אוהב מישהי גם ככה המוח שלך מפרש ומתרגם אחרת מהמציאות כל מה שאתה רואה, זה מאוד דומה לחרמנות - יעידו על כך כל הגברים שנכנסו למיטה עם חן טל והתעוררו בבוקר עם חנניה טל. כולנו חווינו את השלבים הראשונים של ההתאהבות והפרפרים בבטן, בהתחלה הזוג בעננים ועם הזמן הפרפרים מתפוגגים לאיטם ואם יש חיבור מתאים אז מתפתחת האהבה. אהבה שהיא בעצם כימיה טובה ומזוקקת - וזה מה שבאמת חשוב בזוגיות. המראה החיצוני לא באמת משנה אחרי כמה חודשים ביחד, אנחנו בני האדם מתרגלים להכל וזה כולל גם למראה של בן או בת הזוג שלנו - בגלל זה גברים אף פעם לא שמים לב שהאישה שלהם חזרה עם צבע חדש מהמספרה, כל עוד עדיין יש שיער והוא ארוך אז הכל אותו הדבר מבחינתם. זה לא משנה אם האישה בהריון או שהיא סתם עלתה במשקל, גם ככה אנחנו הגברים פחות מתמקדים בבטן של האישה כשאנחנו איתה במיטה, יש בליטות אחרות בגוף שלה שיותר מעניינות אותנו באותו הרגע, ויכול להיות שזה גם עדיף ככה כי אף אחד לא רוצה להרגיש בעיטה של עובר באמצע האקרובטיקה.
אז אולי הן מתנשפות יותר מדי, מקטרות יותר מדי ובקושי יכולות לשרוך את השרוכים בעצמן, אבל התחושה הפנימית שלהן היא שבסוף קובעת. אם האישה שמחה ורגועה אז זה משפיע גם על החיצוניות שלה ואתה בתור הבן זוג שלה תתאהב בה ותימשך אליה כל יום מחדש גם אם היא בתחילת ההריון, חודש שישי או בחודש תשיעי עם פתיחה של שתיים. ולעומת זאת גם ההיפך הוא הנכון. אם האישה כעוסה וממורמרת כי הגבר לא מתייחס אליה או לא נותן לה מספיק תשומת לב אז תהיה התרחקות ויצטברו כעסים וזה לא משנה אם היא שמנה או שהיא דוגמנית מסלול רעבה.
אני מאמין שברגע שיש קשר טוב וכימיה רגשית בין בני הזוג, לא משנה כמה קילו היא עוד תעלה, תמיד יתחשק לך לבוא אליה באיטיות מאחורה וללחוש לה באוזן - "תזוזי כבר יא שמנה!! תחזרי לסוואנה!!!!" - המונית נעצרת לפתע בחריקת בלמים וקוטעת לי את חוט המחשבה. הרצל מוציא את הראש מהחלון וצועק על גברת שמנמנה ומבוהלת שמחזיקה קרואסון בשקית נייר. "היא למשל, לא בהריון! היא סתם שמנה!! נו אתה לא רוצה לענות לי?" הוא ממלמל תוך כדי שהוא ממשיך לדהור ולהקפיץ הולכי רגל במעברי חציה.
בשלב הזה אנחנו כבר די קרובים למקום העבודה שלי ואני מחליט שדווקא יש יום יפה בחוץ וזה יהיה בסדר גמור אם נעצור פה ואמשיך לעבודה ברגל. זה גם יהיה טוב לי לקבל קצת אור יום ולא אור של פלורסנט וגם לא אקפח את החיים שלי בתאונת שרשרת. "אז מה אני יכול לאחל לך, הרצל? שתהיה לכם לידה קלה..." אמרתי תוך כדי שאני יוצא ממונית הדמים. הרצל הדליק סיגריה, הוציא את ראש מהחלון וצעק "מה פתאום! תאחל שלא יגלו שאני בשלילה!".

I’m in a taxicab on my way to work just outside Tel Aviv. The cabby’s name is Hertzel. His parents planned to call him Ezra, but had second thoughts: the name Ezra doesn’t suit a baby, so they named him Hertzel after the father of the Zionist movement. He tells me also that when his wife was born, her parents called her Hedva, meaning Joy; but he calls her Hyena. Hedva is pregnant with their sixth child. Hertzel is looking forward to the birth as if it were a dental extraction.
This cabby has been bitching and moaning nonstop since I gave him the address of my destination. “The hyena is really lucky – she has a belly made of reinforced concrete. See? Even when she’s pregnant, she’s like a Bengal tiger!”
He speaks loudly while speeding without looking much at the road and I’m belted-in in the backseat, holding on for dear life. I’ve already counted twenty traffic violations and a dozen human rights violations.
“And you,” he has the cheek to ask, unprovoked, “Do you get off on a mare’s belly, or you’re a delicate type?”
Should I answer him, I ponder. Better pretend I’m audibly challenged and stare out the window at the clouds. I do try to answer the challenge between myself, though, and soon enough conclude that I don’t really have any preconceived idea on pregnant women’s bodies. True, it is unusual for me not to have an absolute opinion on something, but when it comes to pregnant women, I don’t see any difference between them and any other women, be they WNBA players or cashiers in a drugstore.
Much of it has to do with love. When you love a woman, your brain interprets differently and more favorably towards the reality around you. It’s normal for a pregnant woman to get up at four a.m. and eat peanut butter, the whole jar of it. But hormones and hormonal behaviors are not unique to women. Men too get hormonal, and horny. Some men would tell you they had gone to bed with a Natasha and woke up in the morning with a Boris.
We’ve all experienced the first phases of infatuation and butterflies. At first it’s Cloud Nine, which lasts until the butterflies fly away. Then, only if real chemistry has occurred, something more permanent develops. Love is, after all, pure, refined chemistry, and this is what is important in a relationship. After several months together, looks don’t really matter; we get used to everything, including our partners’ pimples. This is why a man seldom notices that his babe had a new hair color done at the beauty salon. As long as the hair exists and it’s long, it’s fine with him.
So it doesn’t matter whether Babe has become pregnant or gained weight – we men don’t focus on our woman’s belly when in bed with her. There are far more interesting bumps on her body that interest us, and maybe it’s for the better – no one wants to feel a fetal kick in the middle of an acrobatic maneuver. So pregnant women hyperventilate, bitch too much and cannot tie their shoelaces by themselves, but their inner feelings are what count. When your woman is happy and relaxed, she looks good to you and you, as her partner, will fall for her and be attracted to her every single day whether she’s just beginning the pregnancy, is in the sixth month or ninth month or with an opening of two centimeters in the delivery room.
The opposite is also true. If a woman is bitter and angry for not getting the attention she wants, anger would build up. It doesn’t matter if she’s a skinny fashion model or a big, fat girl, women want tender little care and they appreciate it and reciprocate. To sum it up, when good connectivity and emotional chemistry exist in a relationship, it doesn’t matter how many pounds or kilos your woman puts on, you want to approach her from behind and whisper in her ear…
Mayday, Mayday!
Hertzel slams on the brakes and the taxi comes to a halt amid a cloud of white, pungent smoke as the tires squeal. The kamikaze pilot slides the canopy of his Zero attack plane and yells, “Move over, FATSISTA. Go back to the savannah,” at a fat woman holding a croissant in a paper bag. He then pulls the throttle and continues his suicidal mission. “She, for example, isn’t pregnant! She’s just FAT! Now, do you want to answer my question?” he demands as the car continues its rampage among terrified pedestrians on the crosswalks.
We’re nearing the end of the ride, as we’re close to my place of work. It’s a beautiful day and a beautiful life and we want a happy ending, so it’ll be just fine if we stop here and I continue on foot to my work. It would also be nice to collect some bright solar energy before I switch to energy-efficient fluorescent lighting in the office. And maybe I’m saving my life for the future of my upcoming heir.
“What can I wish for you, Hertzel? Have an easy delivery, you and your wife,” I say thankfully outside the taxicab from hell.
Hertzel lights a cigarette, pulls his head outside the window and answers, “Who cares? Wish me luck not to get caught driving with a revoked license.”
