Drøfting av systemene med hensyn til sikkerhet og egnethet:
En RPAS RW kan være svært lite og lett, og likevel ha gode fly-egenskaper og løftekapasitet. Den totale vekten blir da holdt lavest mulig. På grunn av liten vekt er de mer påvirket av vind og vær. Flyvning opp til 8 m/s kan utføres med full manøvrerbarhet og sikkerhet. Flyvning opp til 10 m/s er mulig, men da må RPAS-operatøren (fartøysjef) vurdere situasjonen og omgivelsene nøye, da kontrollen over fartøyet ikke blir like nøyaktig. Alle RPAS plattformene til selskapet er testet helt opp til 12m/s laminœr luftstrøm (ikke turbulent luft).
Operasjonsområdets beskaffenhet, bebyggelse (høyde på bygninger / bygnings -utforming) og topografi (fjell, høye trœr) vil ha en stor innvirkning på RPAS plattformen i mye vind.
RPAS plattformens propeller er små, og er laget av tre, plast, karbon eller myk glassfiber. Dette reduserer faren for større skader ved et evt. uhell. På tross av dette velger vi å sette en minste avstand fra 3. person på 20 meter under alle RPAS oppdrag.
Tilt vil bruke Sedecimkopter (16 rotor), Oktokopteret (8 rotor), Hexakopter (6 rotor) eller Quadrokopter (4 rotor) i våre operasjoner. Sedecimkopter, Oktokopteret og Hexacopter vi bruker har flere propeller/motorer. Dette gjør at ved en teknisk svikt ved en eller flere rotorer, vil fartøyet fortsatt være manøvrerbart, og kunne utføre en kontrollert landing. Det er mulig å kontrollere fartøyet med to defekte rotorer/motorer. For Sedecimkopter vil RPAS’en vœre kontrollerbar med åtte (8) motorer ute av drift. For Oktakopter vil fartøyet vœre kontrollerbart med to defekte rotorer/motorer på samme side, og tre defekte rotorer/motorer dersom de er fordelt rundt på plattformen.
Quadrokoter har kun fire propeller/motorer og vil derfor ikke kunne takle en defekt rotorer/motor.
Vi foretrekker å fly med Hexakopter, Oktakopter eller Sedecimkopter på de fleste oppdrag, men kan måtte løse oppdrag med Quadrokopter i visse tilfeller. En risikovurdering vil bli tatt ved valg av RPAS plattform opp mot sikkerhet og egnethet.
Det er viktig å ha med i planleggingen at ingen av RPAS plattformene har glideevne ved eventuell full stopp av alle rotorene. Sannsynligheten for at det vil inntreffe er minkende med økt antall rotorer/motorer.
Alle RPAS plattformene er batteridrevne. Det gir lite forurensing både når det gjelder miljø og støy. Ulempen ar at de gir kort flytid. Det blir brukt LiPo batteri som strømforsyning. Denne batteritypen har høy kapasitet i forhold til vekt. Og de har en fin utladningskurve. LiPo teknologien blir stadig utviklet med hensyn til kapasitet og sikkerhet. Dagens batteri tåler ganske stor belastning før de evt. blir ustabile. Flyvetiden er varierer fra 6-20 minutter avhengig av hvilket fartøy, nyttelast på fartøyet, propeller, strøm fordelingskort og kapasitet på batteriet. Dette kan regnes ut ved å måle strømtrekket til fartøyet med last. Man kan så finne utladningstiden ut i fra batteriets kapasitet. Strømtrekket vil alltid variere etter hvordan flyvningen foregår.
Vi planlegger derfor aldri å fly mer enn 80% av utregnet flytid. På denne måten blir LiPo batteriene fint behandlet, og beholder derfor en pålitelig kapasitet over lengre tid. Det er Fartøysjefens ansvar å beregne strømtrekket før flyving og monitorere/verifisere denne beregningen via telemetry/OSD under flyving. Det finnes også tabeller fra noen av våre leverandører, som viser beregnet flytid på de forskjellige modellene.

Som et sikkerhetsmoment er det en alarm, evt. stemme ”low voltage”, som løses ut dersom man flyr opp mot batteriets maksimale utladningstid. Det er da ca.1 ½ minutt flytid igjen avhengig av belastning. Det er da mulig for Fartøysjefen å lande RPAS plattformen kontrollert. Data fra telemetri og OSD, brukes alltid for avlesning av strømforbruk og resterende strømkapasitet via Tx/monitor.
LiPo batterier inneholder mye energi og kan under ladning bli ustabile og selvantenne. Det er derfor viktig at Fartøysjef velger et egnet område for batterilading slik at man unngår alvorlige person- eller materiellskader om batteriet skulle komme i ubalanse og antenne.
Warning
Operatører skal alltid lade LiPo batteri i ladekasser og på et egnet sted for å beskytte mot evt. brann og eksplosjonsfare.
Caution
Lav utetemperatur har stor innvirkning på batteriets kapasitet og ytelse.
Ved å bruke 2.4GHz Hott/FASST styrings-system minimerer vi faren for å miste kontrollen med plattformen p.g.a. støy og reflekser.
Ved eventuell fullt utfall av radiosignal har systemet en FS (failsafe) funksjon, som sammen med elektronikk i RPAS plattformen og et greit GPS signal (dvs min 5 satellitter), sørger for at plattformen returnerer til Home Position (HP) og foretar en nedstigning og landing. Denne nedstigning er basert på 90% av throttlebehovet for å stå i høyde hold. Dette gir en rolig nedstigning til bakken. Rekkevidden på ca. 2.5km fri sikt overstiger rekkevidden, og praktisk bruk av plattformen, så det er lite sannsynlig att plattformen kommer utenfor dekningsområdet av R/C utstyret.
Det kan diskuteres om bruk av 2.4GHz frekvensbåndet, til styring av en RPAS plattform er fornuftig. 2.4GHz båndet blir i dag mye brukt av mange forskjellige teknologier pga. at det er ett fritt frekvensbånd. Og det kan derfor være en fare for forstyrrelser fra andre signaler. Men systemet virker svært robust, da det bruker flere forskjellige teknologier for å forhindre att det blir påvirket av støy og forstyrrelser fra andre signaler. Vi har hatt svært gode resultater med Hott/FASST i forhold til andre systemer. Selskapet vil følge med på utviklingen av styringssystemene på markedet og oppdatere fortløpende.
Det er også mulig å aktivere GPS system på RPAS plattformen. Dette kan brukes som ett sikkerhetstiltak. Dersom RPAS operatøren mister radiosignalet til plattformen, kan han/ aktivere GPS funksjonen Position Hold (PH). Fartøyet vil da stoppe opp og stå helt i ro til operatøren er klar til å kontrollere fartøyet igjen. Det kan og brukes failsafe funksjon med GPS hold. Det vil si att dersom R/C styringssignalet skulle bli brutt, f.eks p.g.a. støy, vil fartøyet gå over til GPS hold og stå i ro til signalet kommer tilbake. Operatøren kan f.eks gå nærmere farkosten for å gjenoppnå kontakten. GPS systemet ser ut til å være robust. Vi bruker en «failsafe» FS funksjon på styringssystemet. Dersom R/C styringssignalet skulle bli brutt vil alle kontroller stille seg i nullposisjon. Plattformen vil da rette seg opp og stoppe ved bruk av GPS hold. Høydekontrollen er satt til ett steg under hovring (99% av hover power) så plattformen vil gå veldig sakte ned. Dette med tanke på dersom kontrollen ikke blir gjenopprettet før batteriet er tomt. Plattformen vil da kunne nå bakken i svært lav hastighet før batteriet er tomt, i stedet for å falle fra stor høyde.
Alle RPAS plattformer har sikkerhetsfunksjon instalert i RPAS plattformene sine. Da en slik sikkerhetsfunksjon er avhengig av et greit GPS signal (min.5 satellitter), må beslutningen om å ta i bruke de forskjellige sikkerhetsfunksjonene til RPAS plattformen nøye vurderes og kvalitetssikres. Uten kvalitetssikring vil denne sikkerhetsfunksjonen kun være en falsk trygghet. Beslutningen til Fartøysjefen vil måtte basere seg på bla. operasjonsområdets beskaffenhet (høye naturformasjoner), bebyggelse (høye bygg/strukturer), vurdering av potensielle elektromagnetiske støykilder i området i tillegg til vurdering av tetthet på befolkning, veitrafikk- og lufttrafikk, antall nødlandingsmuligheter etc. i operasjonsområdet.
Utilsiktet interferens av signalene i RPAS’ens GPS system må man som Fartøysjef prøve å forutse. Fartøysjefen må se på sannsynligheten for forstyrrelser fra andre radiotjenester, eksempelvis VHF-radio, HF-radio, naturformasjoner eller høye bygninger som kan skygge for GPS signalene eller reflektere dem slik at feil posisjon oppgis i nav. systemet til RPAS plattformen. Er det stor mistanke om bortfall av GPS signal, må Fartøysjefen ta høyde for dette når han planlegger oppdraget.
Via telemetri eller wifi, kan operatør lese av alle RPAS data via en trådløs pc og/eller kontrollpanel på senderen. Strøm/spennings-kapasitet, varighet, flyhøyde, avstand, styrken på signalet mellom Rx/Tx i prosent, feil på styringssystem, feil på GPS signal.
Alle disse data vil bli brukt under alle RPAS oppdrag. Fartøysjefen/RPAS operatøren vil kunne til enhver tid observere tilstanden til RPAS plattformen og ta evt raske og riktige beslutninger ut i fra informasjonen han får. Dette systemet er en del av MEL listen og skal alltid fungere før man starter RPAS operasjonen. I tillegg vil dataverktøyet bli brukt til datainnsamling for plattformservice. All datainnsamling blir elektronisk lagret hos selskapet. Teknisk-RPAS ansvarlig skal sørge for at dette blir gjort.

Det er viktig at RPAS operatøren kjenner plattformens backup funksjoner (GPS med høyde og pos. Hold, RTH-funksjon etc.) med muligheter og begrensninger om det skulle bli behov.

Discussion of systems regarding their safety and suitability:
An RPAS' RW can be especially small and light but nonetheless have good flight characteristics and lift capacity. The total weight is thus kept as low as possible. Due to their light weight they are more easily influenced by wind and weather. Flights of up to 8 meters per second can be achieved with full maneuverability and safety. Flights of up to 10 meters per second are possible but the RPAS operator (Vehicle Manager) must evaluate the situation and the surroundings carefully as control of the vehicle won't be as precise. All of the company's RPAS platforms are tested in up to 12 meters per second laminar airflow (non-turbulent air).
The nature of the area of operation, dwellings (height of buildings/type of construction), and topography (mountains, tall trees) can have a big effect on an RPAS platform in strong winds. An RPAS platform's propeller is small and is made of wood, plastic, carbon fiber, or soft fiberglass. This reduces the danger of more substantial damages in the event of an accident. Despite this, we choose to set a minimum distance from third parties of 20 meters during all RPAS assignments.
Tilt uses sedecim copters (16 rotors), octocopters (8 rotors), hexacopters (6 rotors), or quadcopters (4 rotors) in our operations. The sedecim copters, octocopters, and hexacopters we use have several propellers/engines. This ensures that in the event of a technical failure of one or more rotors, the craft will continue to be maneuverable and be capable of carrying out a controlled landing. It's feasible to control a vehicle with two defective rotors/engines. A sedecim copter is controllable even with eight (8) engines out of service. In the case of an octocopter, the vehicle is controllable if there are no more than two defective rotors/engines on the same side or three if they are distributed fairly evenly around the platform.
Since a quadcopter has but four propellers/engines, it's unable to handle a defective rotor/engine. We prefer to fly with hexacopters, octocopters, or sedecim copters on most assignments but can solve assignments with quadcopters in certain instances. A risk evaluation will be made weighing the choice of RPAS platform against its safety and suitability.
It's important to consider when planning that none of the RPAS platforms is able to glide in the event of a shutdown of all the rotors. The probability of it occurring decreases in proportion to an increase in the number of rotors/engines.
All RPAS platforms are battery-powered. That produces minimal pollution when it comes to the environment and noise. The disadvantage is that they provide a short flight duration. LiPo batteries are used as the source of power. This type of battery has a high capacity relative to its weight. They also have a nice discharge curve. LiPo technology is constantly developing with regard to capacity and safety. Today's batteries tolerate heavy loads before they eventually become unstable. Flight time varies from 6-20 minutes, depending on the type of vehicle, payload, propeller, power distribution board, and battery capacity. This can be calculated by measuring the power consumption of the vehicle when carrying cargo. We can then discover the discharge time from the battery's capacity. The power consumption will always vary depending on how the flight went.
Therefore we never plan on flying more than 80% of the calculated flight time. This conserves the LiPo batteries so they maintain a reliable capacity. It's the responsibility of the Vehicle Manager to calculate the power consumption prior to flight and monitor/verify this calculation via telemetry/OSD during flight. There are also tables provided by some of our suppliers that show calculated flight time for the various models.

As a security measure, there is an alarm that may sound out "low voltage" if you approach the battery's maximum discharge time. There is then ca. 1 ½ minutes of flight time remaining depending on the cargo. It's then possible for the Vehicle Manager to undertake a controlled landing of the RPAS platform. Data from telemetry and OSD is always used to read the power consumption and remaining power capacity via the Tx/monitor.
LiPo batteries contain a lot of energy and during charging can become unstable and self-combustible. It's important therefore for the Vehicle Manager to choose a suitable area to charge the battery so serious injuries or damage to equipment is avoided in the event the battery becomes unbalanced and self-combusts.
Warning
The operator must always charge the LiPo battery in the charging box and in a suitable place to prevent a potential fire or explosion.
Caution
Low ambient temperatures can greatly affect the battery's capacity and performance.
By using a 2.4 GHz HoTT/FASST radio transmitter we reduce the danger of losing control of the platform due to noise and reflexes.
In the event of a full loss of radio signal, the system has an FS (fail-safe) function, which together with the electronics in the RPAS platform and an adequate GPS signal (i.e. at least five satellites), ensures the platform returns to the Home Position (HP) and undergoes a descent and landing. This descent is based on 90% throttle to remain at the same altitude. This provides for a calm descent to the ground. Range of ca. 2.5 meters plain sight exceeds the range and practical use of the platform, so it's unlikely it escapes the coverage area for RC equipment.
It's debatable whether the use of the 2.4 GHz frequency band makes sense for control of an RPAS platform. The 2.4 GHz band is often used today for many different types of technologies because it's an open frequency band. For this reason there's a risk of interference from other signals. However, the system is quite robust since it uses several different technologies to prevent interference from noise and other signals. We've had very good results with HoTT/FASST compared to other systems. The company will keep abreast with the development of radio transmitters on the market and update our equipment continually.
It's also possible to activate the GPS system on the RPAS platform. This can be done as a safety measure. Should the RPAS operator lose the radio signal with the platform, he can activate the GPS function's Position Hold (PH). The vehicle will then freeze and remain in place until the operator is ready to reassume control of the vehicle. The fail-safe routine can also be used with GPS hold. In other words, if the RC control signal is disrupted, e.g. due to noise, the vehicle will transition to GPS hold and remain in place until the signal returns. The operator can for example get closer to the vehicle to reassume control. The GPS system appears to be very sound. We use a "fail-safe" (FS) routine with the radio transmitter. If the RC control signal is interrupted, all the controls reset in the null position. The platform will then right itself and stop due to the use of GPS hold. Altitude control is set one step below hover (99% of hover power) so the platform will descend slowly. This is in case control is not reestablished prior to the battery becoming depleted. The platform will then be able to descend to the ground at a very low speed before the battery is dead, as opposed to falling from a great height.
Every RPAS platform has a safety routine installed in it. Since this kind of safety routine depends on an adequate GPS signal (at least five satellites), the decision to utilize the various safety routines of RPAS platforms must be carefully evaluated with a focus on the performance. Without a focus on obtaining good results, these safety routines can be a false assurance. The decision of the Vehicle Manager must be based on, among other things, the nature of the operating area (high natural formations); construction (high buildings/structures); an evaluation of potential electromagnetic noise sources in the area and of the density of population, road traffic, and air traffic; along with the number of viable emergency landing places, etc. in the area of operation.
Accidental interference with the signals to the RPAS' GPS system is something the Vehicle Manager must try to predict. The Vehicle Manager must look at the likelihood of disruptions from other radio sources, such as VHF-radio, HF-radio, natural formations or tall buildings that can disrupt the GPS signals or reflect them so an incorrect position is shown in the navigation system of the RPAS platform. If the Vehicle Manager suspects there may be a loss of GPS signal, he needs to take this into consideration when planning the assignment.
The operator can read all the RPAS' data via telemetry or wifi with a wireless PC connection and/or control panel on the transmitter. Power/voltage capacity, duration, altitude, distance, strength of the signal between Rx/Tx in percentage, radio transmitter errors, and GPS signal errors: all of these data may be used in the course of any RPAS assignment. The Vehicle Manager/RPAS operator will always be able to observe the distance to the RPAS platform and, if needed, make quick, correct decisions according to the information he's in possession of. This system is a part of the MEL list and must always be working properly before we start an RPAS operation. In addition, data tools will be used for collection of data for platform service. All data collected are stored at the company electronically. RPAS Technical Support must ensure this is done.
Note
It's important that the RPAS operator is familiar with the platform's back-up routines (GPS with altitude and position hold, RTH-routine, etc.) and with the options and limitations that pertain to them in the event they're needed.
Warning
If you use the GPS function actively, you must consider where you are flying with regard to possible dead areas for GPS (no satellite contact), GPS noise from cell phone towers, mountain formations, and high voltage wires/transformers, etc.
