GENERAL INFORMATION
The Portuguese Government may grant Portuguese nationality to the descendants of
Portuguese Sephardic Jews (including the descendants of Spanish Jews who lived in Portugal
after 1492) who demonstrate a traditional connection to a Sephardic Community of Portuguese
origin. The average time it takes from the moment a request for Portuguese Nationality is
submitted to the Portuguese Government and Portuguese Nationality is granted is
approximately 6 months and it is not necessary for the candidate to come to Portugal in person

The name Sepharad means "Hispania", ie, Iberian Peninsula (Portugal and Spain), not only
Spain. In the 16th century the Portuguese King Manuel I challenged the use of the name
"Spain" by Castile, considering it abusive, as the Roman "Hispania" consisted not only of
Castile (together with its conquered realms), but also of Portugal, an independent country
since 1143.
