Εκατόν πενήντα και πλέον χιλιάδες ελληνικές λέξεις περιέχει η αγγλική γλώσσα και η διεθνής επιστημονική ορολογία. Η μια στις τέσσερις αγγλικές λέξεις είναι ελληνική. Σε αυτό το συμπέρασμα κατέληξε η μοναδική εργασία του συγγραφέα από τη Θεσσαλονίκη κ. Αριστείδη Κωνσταντινίδη που κράτησε 28 χρόνια και ανακοινώθηκε πριν λίγες μέρες στο κατάμεστο αμφιθέατρο του πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών, αφήνοντας άναυδους επιστήμονες και ακροατήριο. Το λεξικογραφικό ενδιαφέρον είναι τέτοιο που αποδεικνύει ότι η ελληνική γλώσσα είναι η γλώσσα των επιστημών και της λόγιας έκφρασης, στην αγγλική γλώσσα. Μέχρι το 1991, όπως τόνισε ο κ. Κωνσταντινίδης, υπήρχαν δύο μόνο εργασίες για την επίδραση της ελληνικής γλώσσας στο ευρωπαϊκό λεξιλόγιο. Η μια για την γαλλική γλώσσα με 1250 ελληνικές ρίζες και η άλλη για τη γερμανική με 1450 λέξεις, πράγμα φτωχό για τον πλούτο της ελληνικής.
Η επίδραση που έχει ασκήσει η ελληνική γλώσσα στο ευρωπαϊκό λεξιλόγιο και ιδιαίτερα στην αγγλική είναι εν μέρει γνωστή, αλλά όχι συστηματικά καταγεγραμμένη και τεκμηριωμένη. Πολλοί ξένοι επιστήμονες γνωρίζουν και αναγνωρίζουν το θεμελιώδη ρόλο που έχει παίξει η ελληνική στον καθορισμό του λεξιλογίου του κλάδου τους, αλλά μόνο ως προς τον δικό τους κλάδο. Δεν έχουν μια σφαιρική εικόνα της συνολικής επίδρασης που έχει ασκηθεί και στους άλλους επιστημονικούς κλάδους. Οι αμφισβητήσεις για το μέγεθος της επίδρασης της ελληνικής προέρχονται κυρίως από τον ελλαδικό χώρο, όπου ελλείψει συγκεκριμένων και ολοκληρωμένων εργασιών, υποβαθμίζονται οι δανεισμοί που έχουν λάβει οι άλλες γλώσσες από την ελληνική.
Είναι ακόμα γεγονός ότι όλες οι γλώσσες δανείζουν και δανείζονται και δεν υπάρχει βεβαίως μια καθαρόαιμη γλώσσα. Ωστόσο, όλες οι γλώσσες ούτε έχουν δανειστεί ούτε έχουν δανείσει τον ίδιο αριθμό λέξεων ούτε ακόμα και την ίδια ποιότητα λέξεων. Το 1991, στο βιβλίο του ο κ. Κωνσταντινίδης "οι ελληνικές λέξεις στην αγγλική γλώσσα", περιελάμβανε 20.600 ελληνικές λέξεις. Καλύπτει όλες τις λέξεις της καθομιλουμένης και τις λέξεις όλων των επιστημονικών κλάδων, πλην της βοτανολογίας, χημείας και ζωολογίας. Εάν προσθέσουμε σε αυτές τις αμιγώς ελληνικές λέξεις, αυτές που κρατά το ήμισυ είναι ελληνικές ως προς το πρώτο ή το δεύτερο συνθετικό τους, τότε το ποσοστό ανέρχεται σε 68%. Στην ονοματολογία των ζώων όλων των κλάδων που περιλαμβάνει όλα τα γένη των ζώων που είχαν ανακαλυφθεί μέχρι το 1975, η ελληνική συμμετοχή ανέρχεται σε 181.102 αμιγείς ελληνικές λέξεις. Εάν προσθέσουμε και τις κατά το ήμισυ ελληνικές λέξεις, τότε το 74,48% είναι ελληνικές λέξεις. Παρά την εκπληκτική αυτή συμμετοχή, η ελληνική αδράνεια έχει επιτρέψει να καθιερωθεί διεθνώς η άποψη ότι στη ζωολογία επικρατεί δήθεν λατινική ορολογία.
Η Ελλάδα μπορεί να είναι μια μικρή χώρα και να έχει μείνει πίσω σε πολλούς τομείς, η γλώσσα της όμως έχει ακολουθήσει τη δική της δυναμική πορεία, έχει διεισδύσει σε πολλές γλώσσες. Η γλώσσα για μας του Έλληνες είναι κάτι περισσότερο από στοιχεία πολιτιστικής κληρονομιάς, είναι το ενωτικό στοιχείο που κράτησε τον ελληνισμό συσπειρωμένο και τον βοήθησε να ξεπεράσει τις εθνικές περιπέτειες.
Translation - English One-Quarter of English Words Is Greek
The English language and the international scientific terminology contain more than 150,000 Greek words. As a matter of fact, one-in-four English words is Greek. This conclusion was reached by an author from Thessaloniki, Aristeidis Konstantinidis, with the completion of his 28 year unique study. His findings were presented a few days ago at the filled-to-capacity lecture theatre of the Univeristy of Athens, leaving scientists and the audience speechless. From a linguistic viewpoint, this study proves that there is an immense interest in languages and that Greek is the language of sciences and the scholary expression in the English language. As Konstantinidis pointed out, only two research studies had been conducted until 1991 on the influence that the Greek language had exercised on European vocabulary. One was about French with 1250 Greek roots and the other was about German with 1450 words. Both numbers are poor compared to the wealth of Greek.
The impact Greek has had on European vocabulary -and particularly the English language- is partly known. However, the influence it has had has not been systematically recorded and substantiated. Numerous non-Greek scientists are aware of the fundamental role Greek has played in determining the vocabulary of their field, but only recognise it as far as their discipline is concerned. They do not have a global view concerning this overall impact, which has also been exercised on other fields. Doubts about the extent of influence the Greek language is exercising, mainly come from Greece itself, where due to lack of specific and concrete research, the amount of words other languages have borrowed from Greek is undermined.
It is still a fact that all languages lend and borrow words from one another and, naturally, there is no such thing as a pure language. However, not all languages have borrowed or lent the same number of words, or even the same quality of words. In his book The Greek Words in the English Language (1991), Konstantinidis included 20,600 Greek words. The book includes all colloquial language and the language of all disciplines, except for the fields of Botany, Chemistry and Zoology. By adding to these, the pure Greek words (those that are half-Greek) with regard to their prefix, suffix and component, then the percentage rate is 68%. In the case of animal nomenclature, concerning all fields, which includes the entire genera of animals discovered up to 1975, Greek participation amounts to 181,102 pure Greek words. Additionally, by further adding those Greek words, then 74.48% of these are Greek. Despite this amazing participation and due to Greek inaction, it has been internationally established that latin terminology prevails in Zoology.
Though Greece may be a small country that is lagging behind in many sectors, the nation's language has followed its own powerful course and has penetrated numerous other languages. Language for Greeks is something more than cultural heritage. It is the element that linked and kept Hellenism focused, the element that helped Greece overcome its national trials.
