Source text - French Du règne de Philippe Auguste à celui de Charles V, Paris ne subit aucune transformation essentielle, mais s'enrichit. S'accroît, s'embellit. Fondations de couvents nouveaux et de collèges, constructions de monuments dans un cadre déjà fixé, développement de certains quartiers, multiplication des métiers, tout reste dans l'ordre d'une évolution prévue. Mais le règne de saint Louis est marqué par l'admirable floraison du style gotique. L'héritage d'impeccables traditions manuelles permet d'ériger ces merveilles de grâce et de pureté que sont la Saint-Chapelle, le réfectoire de Saint-Martin-des-Champs, la chapelle de la Vierge et le réfectoire de l'abbaye de Saint-Germain-des-Prés. Le nom de Pierre de Montreuil est généralement associé à ces constructions qui ont en commun la force et l'élégance, presque gracile dans les rapports des vides et des pleins. Saint Louis a marqué son passage dans la capitale par une création personnelle qui ne tente pas de rivaliser avec l'immense entreprise de la cathédrale voisine. Autant que le chef-d'œuvre d'un architecte, la Saint-Chapelle est un act de foi. Édfié de 1245 à 1248, ce somptueux reliquaire de la Couronne d'épines rapportée de Constantinople a pour premier mérite l'unité de pensée et de réalisation.
Il faut relire Joinville pour pénétrer dans l'intimité du roi. Il semble que sa bonté, sa douceur, son ferme courage aient apporté un ultime couronnement moral à ce sommet de civilisation que fut le XIIIe siècle. En companie du vieux chroniqueur nous le suivons à travers les salles de ce Palais de ses ancêtres où il vécut au milieu de son peuple.
Son souvenir ne s'attache point, comme on le croit, à toutes les constructions médiévales encore subsistantes, mais seulement à la salle Saint-Louis et à la tour voisine, à la Saint-Chapelle et à la galerie Marchande. C'est Philippe le Bel qui entreprit les vastes travaux destinés à faire du Palais «le plus très bel que nul en France oncques veit». Les trois salles basses de la Conciergerie, les deux tours de la Grand-Chambre, le Grand-Salle dont le plan s'est conservé à travers les incendies et les reconstructions, datent de son règne.

Основывались новые монастыри и коллежи, по сложившимся уже обычаям возводились памятники, развивались отдельные кварталы, множились ремесла, шел закономерный процесс развития. В это же время период правления Людовика Святого ознаменовался поразительным расцветом готического стиля. Наследуя лучшие традиции мастеров ручной работы, создаются такие безукоризненные шедевры архитектуры, как Сент-Шапель (Святая капелла), трапезная Сент-Мартен-де-Шам, капелла Святой Девы и трапезная аббатства Сент-Жермен-де-Пре. Как правило, имя зодчего Пьера де Монтрея связывают с этими сооружениями, где изящно переплелись пустота и наполненность, которые одновременно могущественны и элегантны. Царствование Людовика Святого в столице также отмечено его персональным творением, которое, однако, не было задумано с тем, чтобы конкурировать с возводимым по соседству громадным собором. Капелла Сент-Шапель являет собою не только архитектурный шедевр, но и акт веры. Построенный в период с 1245 по 1248 год, реликварий стал роскошным местом хранения, привезенного из Константинополя, тернового венца, а главным его достоинством стало единство идеи и ее воплощения.
Чтобы проникнуть в личную жизнь короля, следует повторно прочитать произведение Жана Жуанвиля. Создается впечатление, что его мягкосердечность и доброта, его мужество и решительность, были теми моральными качествами, которые стали венцом расцвета цивилизации, каковой пришелся на XIII век. В сопровождении старого летописца мы проходим вместе с королем по залам Дворца его предков, где он жил в окружении своего народа.
Однако, вопреки общепринятому мнению, не все средневековые постройки сохранившиеся доныне призваны служить памятью о нем, а только лишь зал Людовика Святого и соседняя башня, часовня Сент-Шапель и Торговая галерея. Широкомасштабную деятельность развил во Дворце уже Филипп Красивый, вознамерившись сделать его «наиболее прекрасным из когда-либо существующих во Франции». Ко времени его правления относятся три нижних зала Консьержери, две башни Караульного зала и Большой зал, план которого смог пережить пожары и реконструкции.
