Source text - Korean For the first two years of the conflict in Syria, Mohammed carried on much as he had before. He went to school, played football with his brothers and cousins in the neighbourhood and went swimming on warm weekends in the lake near their village, Tal Shihab, close to the border with Jordan.
One night in February 2013, the bombs began to fall. Their house was destroyed around them while Mohammed and his family huddled in a corner for safety, fortunate to emerge unhurt from the wreckage in the morning.
“It was the worst night of our lives,” Mohammed said. Within days, he and his parents and three brothers arrived in Za’atari refugee camp in northern Jordan. Mohammed described the despair he felt as an 11-year-old forced to live in a tent, cut off from everything he once knew.
“I felt like there was nothing here for me,” he said. “At first there were no schools for children my age, so I spent the first six months just sitting in the tent and doing nothing. It was very dusty and we were always getting ill.”
Eventually, Mohammed was able to return to school and made new friends, but there was little to keep them occupied in the camp apart from disorganized games of soccer. With groups of bored teenage boys often hanging around, fights were not uncommon.
One person in the camp had a plan for how to channel this youthful aggression into something more positive. Mohammed Al-Akrad is a 34-year-old Syrian refugee from the southern city of Dara’a, and a former Syrian and Middle Eastern wrestlingchampion.
When UNICEF and Mercy Corps opened a fitness centre in the camp, he approached them and suggested organizingwrestling courses for boys. After they agreed, Mohammed approached his young namesake and urged him to join the class.
“I’d seen Mohammed fighting in the street a few times,” he said. “So one day I went over to him and told him to come to thewrestling course.”
The youngster knew nothing about wrestling, but after several of his friends joined up he decided to try it out.
Their new teacher taught them the rules of the sport as well its values: discipline, respect for your opponent and controlling your aggression. He would begin each session by encouraging the boys to open up and talk about what was on their minds – for example, the war in Syria or life in the camp.
Once they started wrestling for real, Mohammed fell in love with the sport and discovered that he had a natural talent for it. Of the four camp championships held so far, Mohammed has won every one in his weight class.
His success has fuelled his ambition, and now, at age 14, he dreams of travelling overseas to compete and become a regional champion like his mentor.
“I want to go abroad and find the ultimate bout,” he said. “I want to test myself against the best wrestlers, so that even if I lose I can learn from them,” he said.
His trainer is convinced that his protégé has the ability and, more importantly, the dedication to emulate his own achievements. “He has the potential to compete nationally or even internationally, for sure, but if he only stays here in the camp there is a limit to how much he can improve. He needs to fight a higher level of opponent.”
For now, he says, it is enough that Mohammed has found a dream. “Wrestling has planted a seed of ambition in him. If you have a dream then you also have hope, and it’s given a sense of meaning to his life here in the camp. I hope one day I will see him competing on television, maybe even in the Olympics, and know that I played a small part in his success.”

그러던 2013년 2월의 어느 날 밤, 폭격이 시작되었습니다. 모하마드와 가족들은 집 한구석에서 서로를 부둥켜안고 긴 밤을 보냈습니다. 집은 모두 파괴되었지만, 이튿날 아침 다행히 가족 모두 무사히 잔해에서 빠져나올 수 있었습니다.
“최악의 밤이었어요”라고 모하마드는 회상합니다. 한순간에 삶의 터전을 잃은 모하마드 가족은 며칠 후 요르단 북쪽의 자타리 난민촌에 도착했습니다. 모하마드는 11세 소년으로서 하루아침에 자신이 알던 세상을 뒤로한 채 텐트에서 살게 되었을 때의 절망감을 털어놓습니다. “이곳 난민촌에는 제가 할 수 있는 게 아무것도 없다고 느꼈어요. 제 나이 또래 아이들을 위한 학교도 없어서 처음 6개월간은 텐트에 앉아서 아무것도 안 하며 시간을 보냈어요. 먼지가 너무 많아서 자주 아프기까지 했어요.”
모하마드는 나중에는 학교에 다니며 새로운 친구들을 사귈 수 있게 되었지만, 골목 축구를 하는 것 외에는 소년들이 난민촌에서 할 수 있는 것은 거의 없었습니다. 한가하기만 한 십 대 소년들이 몰려다니다 보니 주먹다짐도 종종 일어나곤 했습니다.
난민촌 청소년들의 이러한 에너지를 더 긍정적인 곳에 쓰이게 할 방법을 생각해낸 한 남성이 있었습니다. 바로 시리아 다라아(Dara’a) 출신 전직 중동 지역 레슬링 챔피언인 모하마드 알-아크라드(Mohammad Al-Akrad)입니다. 유니세프와 머시코(Mercy Corps)가 난민촌에 체육센터를 짓자, 모하마드는 소년들을 위한 레슬링 수업을 개설할 것을 제안했습니다. 레슬링 수업 개설이 찬성된 후, 모하마드는 자신과 이름이 같은 어린 모하마드에게 레슬링 수업에 참여할 것을 권유했습니다. “어린 모하마드가 길에서 싸우는 것을 몇 번 본적이 있어요. 그래서 레슬링 수업에 와 보는 것이 어떠냐고 말했습니다.”

본격적으로 레슬링을 배워나가자, 어린 모하마드는 레슬링과 사랑에 빠졌습니다. 모하마드는 자신이 레슬링에 재능이 있다는 것을 알게 되었다고 합니다. 모하마드는 현재까지 난민촌에서 개최한 네 번의 경기에서 모두 우승하여 체급 챔피언을 차지했습니다.
레슬링에 대한 열정과 재능을 발견한 열 네 살 모하마드는 스승 모하마드처럼 세계 곳곳에서 경기를 치르며 지역 챔피언이 되는 것을 꿈꾸고 있습니다. “해외에서 경쟁하며 궁극의 경기에 참가하고 싶어요. 저는 최고의 레슬러들과 시합하며 저 자신을 시험하고 싶거든요. 경기에서 지더라도 상대 참가자로부터 배움을 얻을 수 있도록 말이에요.”
스승 모하마드는 제자 모하마드가 자신의 선수로서의 업적을 따라잡을 만한 재능뿐 아니라 그에 걸맞은 집중력과 일념 또한 가지고 있다고 말합니다. “모하마드는 확실히 전국 대회, 그리고 나아가 세계 대회에서 상대 선수와 겨룰만한 잠재력이 있습니다. 그러나 모하마드가 계속 여기 난민촌에서 생활해야 한다면, 레슬링 선수로서의 발전 가능성에는 한계가 있을 수밖에 없습니다. 모하마드는 더 뛰어난 선수들과 싸워봐야만 합니다.”
스승 모하마드는 지금으로써는 어린 모하마드가 꿈을 찾은 것만으로도 다행이라고 말합니다. “레슬링은 이 아이에게 열정의 씨앗을 심어주었습니다. 꿈이 있다면 희망도 있고, 난민촌에서 삶의 의미도 찾을 수 있다고 생각합니다. 저는 언젠간 텔레비전에서, 아니면 어쩌면 올림픽에서, 모하마드가 시합하는 모습을 보게 될 날이 왔으면 좋겠습니다. 제가 모하마드의 성공에 조금이나마 보탬이 되었다는 것을 느낄 수 있게 되기를 바랍니다.

I have been working as an online intern at UNHCR(UN High Commissioner for refugees) until very recently, and my major duty has been translating the original news articles and information packages from Geneva headquarters into Korean, for domestic online publication. From the experience I learned to be accurate, attentive to detail, and also learned to maintain an official and consistent tone & manner when translating.
I have also worked as a part time translator at Babosarang Design Shop. My job was to translate online merchandise descriptions from Korean to English for the international sales department.
