Bio

I am pleased to work as a freelancer for the captioned project with you.

I hold a master of engineering degree in thermal science from Tongji Univ, Shanghai, China and was admitted into PhD programs of several non-Chinese universities (such Univ. Glasgow, Univ Paris VII, Laval Univ., Univ Provence, Essen Univ , Nanyang Tech etc.).

Afterwards I have worked at major multinational corporations mainly from Germany, France and the U.S. (such as Siemens Heimann, Deutsche Babcock, Alstom etc) as well as several local companies in the power/electricity industry with various functions (design, engineering, management, quality assurance and certification, marketing, purchasing etc).

I used to be also an interpreter/translator for my foreign colleagues while working at those companies in addition to my engineering and management functions. The total length of this service amounts to more than 10 years.

Over the years since I’ve left my last employer, I have developed and provided various business and technology services to foreign clients in various fields, incl. also translation, localization and globalization services. My services include among others, localizing software, help documentation, company and product pamphlets, websites, databases, multimedia files. Areas of specialities cover energy, power, machinery, semiconductors, engineering, multimedia and web, IT, laws etc. Languages cover English, German and French.

I started to learn foreign languages very young and by 20, I was able to use 5 languages – English, German, French, Russian and Esperanto, among them, only German and Russian was learned from classes while the rest – French, English and Esperanto was totally my own initiative. Since then I have never stopped learning these languages over the long long period. I have special enthusiasm for German, German literature, science and the German nation. I am reading German daily and particularly those books written by famous German novelists such as Thomas Mann, Günther Grass and of course Goethe and Schiller. And since 2007 I have even added two other languages to my competence list – Greek and Latin. I have superb learning capacity.

Here below you will find a little bit more info about my linguistic services:

Website localization
====================

Website localization, although at first glimpse it looks more or less a language translation job, but in fact it is much more than that. It involves tons of IT techniques. For the simplest website localization project, as an example, you have to be familiar with at least the html codes, if the entire site is based upon static pages in html alone. And if you deploy sophisticated technologies such as dynamic pages with JavaScript, or database driven sites written in PHP or Java or ASP, then you are dealing with a complicated IT project, much less a language project.

Nowadays, multimedia, online communications and other interactive functions are commonplace in many websites, and localization and globalization of this type of websites are more challenging, apart from their linguistic nature. The real time language translation for these websites involve lots of web technologies and Internet resources.

Software Localization
=====================

I have been engaging in software localization since 2003. Software localization, simply put, is to convert the software interface from one language to another, but in fact there are lot more to do.

This work is not a pure translation, and in fact, translation accounts for only a smaller work load (possibly less than 1/4 of the total).

The majority of work is focused on the analysis of the software, the editing of various resources, incl. images,audio, video and other media. One has to understand many IT technologies outside the language skills, incl. file analysis, hex code editing, transformation, font change, image and media treatment, testing, patching, encrypting.decrypting, compression/decompression (packing/unpacking), disassembling (cracking) etc.

In addition, one has to respect the application environment of the client culture, apart from the language itself.

Therefore it is a fairly challenging work. Language translation, as one insider puts it, is one of the most sophisticated activities of humans.

Translations
=================
Of course I can also translate textual documents in forms of Microsoft Word, Excel or PPT, or pdf documents which will be either directly edited or first transformed into Word and after translation, reconverted into pdf. Prices vary according to the nature of the original files and the scope of contents and many other factors, such as the time table and the size of the documents under translations.

Languages Covered
=================

Although I am multilingual with proficiency of different degrees in English, German, French, Russian, Greek, Hebrew, Esperanto and Chinese, I am now particularly competent in Chinese -> English/German translation, as English has been my working language and I have written more than 8000 pages of English reports of the solar energy and power industries to fortune 500 companies during the 2003-2007 period alone and thus my English is nearly at the native level.

The above shows that I am extremely competent in language services for you and the linguistic world.

Sincerely,

Mark Chen
