Source text - Korean
| Translation - English Abbot:
(The chant in background)
Under the Great Sixth Patriarch was master Nanyue,
and under his tutelage was Mazu. Mazu, in his fervent
search for enlightenment, was meditating fiercely to the
point of abusing himself. Upon seeing this, Nanyue took a
roof tile and started grinding it beside Mazu as his disciple
was meditating. Grinding a tile in plain sight of his disciple
looked strange indeed. Mazu then became annoyed and
asked his teacher:
Mazu
What are you grinding that tile for?
Nanyue
(Grinding) I am making a mirror out of this tile.
Mazu
A mirror, out of a stone tile?
Nanyue
A much easier task than just sitting there and hoping idle
meditation will turn one into a Buddha.
Abbot
Upon hearing it, Mazu knelt in front of his master and
supplicated. Nanyue than screamed into his ear, asking:
When the cart does not move, should you strike the ox or
the cart, my dear disciple? The words gained Mazu
enlightenment on the spot, and he joined the ranks of great
Chan masters. (Chuckle) |
