“People feel the need to make their point, and they think their point is the solution. What makes sense to me? How do I sense the environment? My solution is not just my solution, it's the solution. Since I'm rational, reasonable and smart, I’ve got to get that out there. The problem is then if everybody does that, then all you've got is people talking past each other.”
Instead of aggressively arguing for our solutions, we should be focused on creating epiphany moments for our negotiation counterparts, also known as our potential customers. As Chris explains, negotiation and persuasion have very little to do with you and your opinion:
“Great marketing, great sales, great communication is about providing epiphany moments. What's the advantage of an epiphany moment? They feel bonded to whoever provided that epiphany. People feel grateful. There's an emotional attachment that is instantaneously created toward whoever provided that epiphany.
Stark raving fans. Loyal customers. Everybody wants to have a base of stark raving fans. Well, stark raving fans are created when people are convinced they’ve heard the truth and you’re the one who told them.”

“Sentiamo il bisogno di esprimere il nostro punto di vista, e pensiamo che il nostro punto di vista sia la soluzione. Cos’è importante per me? Come percepisco l’ambiente? La mia soluzione non è solo la mia soluzione, è la soluzione. Dal momento che sono razionale, ragionevole e intelligente, devo tirarla fuori. Il problema è che se facciamo tutti così l’unica cosa che otteniamo e di parlarci l’uno sopra l’altro”.
Invece di difendere con forza le nostre idee, dovremmo impegnarci a creare delle rivelazioni per le nostre controparti nella negoziazione, ovvero i nostri potenziali clienti. Come spiega Chris, la negoziazione e la persuasione hanno ben poco a che fare con noi e con la nostra opinione:
“Grande marketing, grandi vendite, grande comunicazione significa regalare rivelazioni. Qual è il vantaggio di una rivelazione? Che le persone si sentono legate a chi gliel’ha donata, le sono grate. Si crea istantaneamente un attaccamento emotivo verso chi l'ha rivelata.
Fan scatenati. Clienti fedeli. Tutti vogliono avere una base di fan scatenati. Bene, i fan scatenati nascono quando le persone sono convinte di aver sentito la verità e voi siete coloro che l’hanno rivelata".
