Source text - Russian –
Translation - English “Cod! C’mere!” - Kolbein shouts.
I realize I managed to doze off while we were entering the haven, despite all the
shouts and commands that were thrown back and forth. I hurry to my feet.
“Sir! At your service!” - I answer loudly and limp my way to the stern.
My foot is numb because I slept sitting on it.
We are moored by the pier already. The port is alive and busy, foul stenches and sweet aromas hit my nostrils one after the other. Mostly stenches, though, considering the many sources of the latter: rotten fish, meat, garbage and swill from the local inns, all sorts of droppings, of which there is plenty on shore and on the ships alike. Only sometimes I catch a whiff of food being cooked on a brazier or in an oven, which makes my mouth water, but it is inevitably erased by stenches from a nearby tannery, with a bit of sea ooze from under the pier.
“Local air not much to yer likin’, eh?”
Kolbein had to raise his voice, because of the surrounding ruckus.
I nod at the crew, who are busy unloading the knarr.
“Can I help, captain?”
“Nay, lad, let’s have a chat,” - he chews on his lips, that look like dry, sea-salted tow rope. “What’s yer name?”
“Yng… I mean, it doesn’t matter, does it? Just call me Cod, I don’t care,” - I say wryly.
“You’re no Cod, you’re a Bass! A youngster, but with sharp spikes and teeth, I say,” - he pats me on the back. “I owe you, Bass. You done saved our hides two times in a single night. I am in your debt, ask what you will of me.”
“Well...”
I have to restrain myself. I always wanted to be a hero, and try not to let it get to my head now. I need to choose carefully to survive.
“Captain, I need your connections here. For work and for lodging.”
