Greek to English: Archaeological site of Kamiros in www.greektravelworld.com
Translation - English Kamiros, is an ancient city on the island of Rhodes, in the Dodecanese. Located on the northwest coast of the island, 3 km. west of Kalavarda village. Kamiros is one of the three ancient cities of ancient Rhodes with Ialyssos and Lindos. He was a member of the Doric sextet.
It reached its heyday in the 6th and 5th BC century, thanks to the expanded rural economy. In classical times, Kamiros, like the two other city-states of the island, participate in A Athenian Alliance. The 412 BC, during the Peloponnesian War ( 431-404 BC) disembarked on the coast, along with the Spartan fleet, the Ialysios Dorian, son of the famous Olympic champion Diagoras, and convinces the Rhodians to join a single state. In the new capital of the Rhodian state, the city of Rhodes, which will be established in 411 BC with neighborhood residents and the three old city-states, will be transferred to as the center of political, economic and cultural life. The old cities but not stopped inhabited, as demonstrated by the example of Kamiros, which was rebuilt in a wide area after the great earthquake of 227/6 BC The archaeological site are the ruins of the Hellenistic / Roman city of Kamiros. During the prehistoric period the area was inhabited by people of Mykines and there are traces in the cemetery chamber tombs of Kalavarda village. The foundations of the temple already placed from the eighth century. The earthquake of 226 BC, who knocked down the famous Colossus of Rhodes also destroyed the city and the temple of Kamiros, while the earthquake of 142 BC destroyed for the second time.
At the top of the hill was the Acropolis, which includes the complex of the temple of Athena and the Stoa Kamiros. It has a water tank of 600 cubic meters of water, enough for 400 families and was built in the 6th century
The Acropolis was excavated by the Italian (Levantine and British) consul and archaeologist Alfred Biliotti (Sir Alfred Biliotti) and French (Alsatian) archaeologist, painter and pioneer of archaeological photography Auguste Salzmann, between 1852 and 1864. Many of the findings from the excavations are now kept in the British Museum of London. In 1928 the Italian Archaeological School began a systematic excavation of the area , along with restoration work, which continued until the end of the Second World War. Here are born great poets Peisandros and Anaxandrides. It is particularly important archaeological site, after the ancient settlement preserved in very good condition. Few only found in the Archaeological Museum of Rhodes, such as the famous headstone of Krito and Timarista - end 5th century BC.
