British playwright Harold Pinter is the black sheep of Theater of the Absurd. Although some regard Pinter as a realist writer, he clearly adheres to absurdist traditions. If Theater of the Absurd solely conjures up associations with the abnormal and experimental, it is perhaps worth reflecting back on everyday life. The absurd exists across various aspects of life. Indeed, the ever-repeating cycle of everyday life is filled with ridiculous happenings. It is extraordinary and comical. It is mired in a chaos of problematic circumstances facing unusual beings. The Theater of the Absurd plays on these situations. The genre sprouted from post-WWII France, upon a foundation of surrealism and existentialism. It represents a kind of anti-dramatic tendency that completely dismantles every aspect of realism. A situation where one is helplessly imprisoned in the confines of status quo despite the desire to change an unbearable society. It is perhaps aptly summarized by George Bernard Shaw’s epitaph, which reads “I knew if I waited around long enough something like this would happen .”

Located in the Flanders region of northwest Belgium, Ghent is known as one of Belgium’s most beautiful cities alongside Bruges. It was first settled around the Leie and Scheldt rivers in the Stone Age and prospered through trade based on its canals. This storied city retains the charm of its illustrious past, as evident in the Gothic architecture of its cathedral, public offices and art museums. The serene currents of the river are lined with the works of artists and architects collectively known as the Flemish school. Like Cambridge in Britain, Ghent is also known as a university town, as it is home to prestigious universities of deep history and tradition. The streets of Ghent are alive and bustling with citizens who cycle across the quiet roads, students who sit by the river and read books, and tourists who explore every corner of the city. When the sun sets, lights from the buildings and streetlamps reflect softly from the water to create a gentle glow over the entire city. By the canals, countless visitors gather to enjoy the wondrous nighttime vista in romantic revelry that lasts until the early hours of the morning.

(Everything we see hides another thing, we always want to see what is hidden by what we see.).”

Surrealist painter René Magritte once remarked, “Everything we see hides another thing, we always want to see what is hidden by what we see.” It is common to think that art is the recreation of the visible, which therefore leads to the conclusion that paintings must depict the familiar, the seen, and the existent. The replication of such objects on the canvas brings a sense of satisfaction at comprehending the artwork. However, the paintings of Magritte subvert such expectations. Although most of the depicted objects may be familiar, his paintings are reminiscent of complex mathematical or philosophical conundrums.
