Достигнув Альтдорфа, Суворов увидел, что далее дороги не имелось и Швица можно было достичь лишь по Люцернскому озеру, на котором неприятель захватил переправочные средства. На это обстоятельство ни Ф. Готце, ни Г. Штраух не обратили внимания Суворова при обсуждении плана похода (по другим данным австрийские генералы уверяли Суворова в том, что дорога на Швиц вдоль Люцернского озера имеется). Из Альтдорфа существовали две дороги — из Шэхенской долины к верховьям р. Линт, где Суворов мог соединиться с отрядом Линкена, и из Мадеранской долины — к верховьям Рейна. Однако ни та, ни другая не вели к Швицу и соединение с войсками Римского-Корсакова и Готце было невозможно. Находясь в столь критическом положении, Суворов узнал о существовании двух горных троп — через перевалы Роуз-Альп-Кульм (2172 метра) и Кинциг-Кульм (2073 метра), ведущих через снеговой хребет Роcшток к деревне Мутен, откуда шла дорога к западу на Швиц. Тогда он решил направить по кратчайшей из них (протяжённостью 18 километров, идущей через перевал Кинциг, всю армию, намереваясь во что бы то ни стало дойти до Швица.
С рассветом 16 (27) сентября армия выступила. Авангард вёл Багратион, за ним следовали войска генералов Дерфельдена и Ауфенберга (нем.)русск., а за ними — вьюки. Розенбергу было приказано прикрывать тыл от нападений Лекурба и следовать за вьюками. Переход армии представлял огромные трудности. Множество людей, лошадей и вьюков погибло, сорвавшись в пропасти. Через 12 часов пути авангард достиг деревни Мутен и захватил стоявший там французский пост (150 чел), не успевший сделать ни единого выстрела. Остальные войска растянулись по всему пути и провели ночь на снежном перевале. Лишь вечером 17 (28) сентября хвост колонны добрался до Мутена. Затем ещё в течение двух дней той же дорогой тянулись вьюки. Арьергард за это время отразил два нападения Лекурба.
С 17 (28) на 18 (29) сентября арьергард двумя колоннами с интервалом в несколько часов двинулся вслед за главными силами. Лишь утром 29 сентября Лекурб, поняв, по какому пути ушла русская армия, послал сообщение Массене, Молитору, Мортье и Луазону о том, что Суворов во главе 20—25-тысячной армии вторгся в Мутенскую долину через перевал Кинциг-Кульм[15].
Последние части арьергарда Суворова прибыли в Мутенскую долину 18 (29) сентября. В тот же день, в Мутенской долине, Суворов получил письменное донесение генерала Линкена о поражении Римского-Корсакова (14 [25]—15 [26] сентября) и Готце (14 [25] сентября).

Reaching Altdorf, Suvorov saw that the next road was not available and Schwyz can be achieved only on lake Lucerne, on which the enemy seized the crossing means. In this circumstance neither F. Gotz, no G. Strauch did not pay attention Suvorov in discussing the plan of campaign (according to others, the Austrian generals Suvorov assured that the road to Schwyz, along the lake Lucerne is available). From Altdorf there were two roads from Chechenskoi valley to the headwaters of the R. lint, where Suvorov was able to connect with a group of Linken, and Materinskoy valley to the upper Rhine. However, neither one nor the other do not lead to Schwyz and connection with the forces of Rimsky-Korsakov and Gotz was impossible. Being in such a critical situation, Suvorov learned of the existence of two mountain paths through the passes of the rose of the Alps-Kulm (2172 m) and Kinzig Kulm (2073 meters) leading through the snow ridge Rostock to the village of Muddy from going West on the road to Schwyz. Then he decided to send on the shortest of them (18 kilometers long, running through the pass, the Kinzig, the whole army, intending at all costs to reach Schwyz.
With the dawn of 16 (27) September the army acted. The vanguard was led by Bagration, followed by the troops of generals of Derfelden and Auffenberg (it.)Russian., and behind them — the packs. Rosenberg was ordered to cover the rear from the attacks of Lecourbe and follow the packs. The transition of the army presented enormous difficulties. A lot of people, horses and baggage were lost, fell into the abyss. After 12 hours the vanguard reached the village of Muddy and seized the French post that stood there (150 people), who failed to make a single shot. The rest of the troops stretched across the way and spent the night on a snow pass. Only on the evening of 17 (28) September the tail of the column got to Mutina. Then in two days we reached the packs. The rearguard during this time, repelled two attacks by Lecourbe.
17 (28) 18 (29) Sep rearguard in two columns every few hours went after the main forces. Only on the morning of September 29, Lecourbe, having understood which way went the Russian army, sent a message Massena, Molitor, and Mortier Loizou that Suvorov at the head of a 20-25-strong army invaded Mutinsky the valley through the pass of the Kinzig-Kulm[15].
The last part of the rearguard Suvorov arrived in Mutinsky valley 18 (29) Sep. On the same day, in Malinskoj valley, Suvorov received a written report General Linken about the defeat of Rimsky-Korsakov (14 [25]-15 [26] of September) and Gotz (14 [25] of September).
