Source text - English A basic issue in the neurosciences of language is whether an L2 can be processed through the same neural mechanism underlying L1 acquisition and processing. In the present paper I review data from functional neuroimaging studies focusing on grammatical and lexico- semantic processing in bilinguals. The available evidence indicates that the L2 seems to be acquired through the same neural structures responsible for L1 acquisition. This fact is also observed for grammar acquisition in late L2 learners contrary to what one may expect from critical period accounts. However, neural differences for an L2 may be observed, in terms of more extended activity of the neural system mediating L1 processing. These differences may disappear once a more ‘native-like’ proficiency is established, reflecting a change in language processing mechanisms: from controlled processing for a weak L2 system (i.e., a less proficient L2) to more automatic processing.
The neuroimaging data reviewed in this paper also support the notion that language control is a crucial aspect specific to the bilingual language system. The activity of brain areas related to cognitive control during the processing of a ‘weak’ L2 may reflect competition and conflict between languages which may be resolved with the intervention of these areas.
Translation - Italian Una questione fondamentale nel campo della neurolinguistica è di stabilire se una L2 può essere elaborata attraverso lo stesso meccanismo neurale che si trova alla base dell'acquisizione e dell'elaborazione di L1. Nel presente articolo esaminerò i dati di studi di neuroimaging funzionale incentrati sull'elaborazione grammaticale e lessico-semantica nei bilingui. Le informazioni disponibili indicano che la L2 sembra essere acquisita attraverso le stesse strutture neurali responsabili dell'acquisizione della L1. Questo fatto si osserva anche nell'acquisizione della grammatica negli apprendenti tardivi di L2, contrariamente a quanto ci si potrebbe aspettare dai resoconti sul periodo critico per l'apprendimento. Tuttavia, esistono delle differenze neurali con L2, come l'attività più estesa del sistema neurale che media l'elaborazione di L1. Queste differenze possono scomparire una volta che si è stabilita una competenza più 'nativa' e ciò riflette l'andamento dei meccanismi di elaborazione del linguaggio, che va da un'elaborazione controllata per un sistema L2 debole (cioè, una L2 meno avanzata) ad un'elaborazione più in automatico.

Source text - English Bilingual children often outperform monolingual children in tasks of cognitive control. This advantage may be a consequence of the fact that bilinguals have more practice controlling attention due to an ongoing need to manage two languages. However, existing evidence is limited because possible differences in ethnicity and socioeconomic status have not been properly controlled. To address this issue, we administered the Simon task to bilingual and monolingual children of identical ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds. Bilingual and monolingual children performed identically, whereas children from higher SES families were advantaged relative to children from lower SES families. Controlling differences in SES and ethnicity may attenuate the bilingual advantage in cognitive control.

Questo vantaggio può essere una conseguenza del fatto che i bilingui accumulino più pratica nel controllo dell'attenzione, grazie alla continua necessità di gestire due lingue. Source text - English Immigration has always tried politicians' patience, but the subject is one Europe’s (politicians) would rather not talk about. No issue generates more emotion, and few others seem as confounding to solve.
Taking a stand on either side of the debate is bound to get one burned. Vowing to act tough on illegal immigrants and false asylum seekers plays well in the heartland; but crackdowns merely send refugees underground, forcing them to take ever-deadlier risks to get in.
Easing entry requirements makes good economic sense, since Europe needs 75 million new workers over the next 50 years to replenish its ageing population; but try telling that to downsized factory workers in Stuttgart or Glasgow.
Translation - Italian L’immigrazione ha sempre messo a dura prova la pazienza dei politici ma quelli europei preferirebbero addirittura non toccare l'argomento. Nessun altro tema genera dibattiti più accesi di questo e pochi altri sembrano così difficili da risolvere. Non importa schierarsi a favore o contro, le critiche saranno assicurate.
Promettendo misure più ferree contro i clandestini e contro i falsi rifugiati politici riscuote molto successo tra l'elettorato. Tuttavia, con l’inasprimento delle leggi non si fa altro che spingere gli immigrati verso la clandestinità, forzandoli a correre ancora più rischi per varcare la frontiera.
In realtà, facilitando le procedure di ingresso per gli immigrati farebbe bene all’economia, dato che l’europa avrà bisogno di 75milioni di nuovi lavoratori per i prossimi 50 anni, per portare nuova linfa alla popolazione che sta invecchiando; ma chi lo dice agli operai licenziati nelle industrie di Stoccarda e Glasgow?
