Source text - English The year 2015 was marked with the 150th birthday anniversary of Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytsky who headed the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church for over four decades in the first half of the twentieth century. The recognition by the Vatican of the heroic virtues of Andrey Sheptytsky became yet another step in the ongoing beatification process of the Metropolitan, while the unveiling of the monument to the Metropolitan in front of the St. George Cathedral in Lviv by the President of Ukraine in July 2015 demonstrated that Andrey Sheptytsky took a permanent place in the pantheon of the all-Ukrainian national figures. The conferences, colloquiums, round tables and exhibitions were conducted in the same year to popularize Sheptytsky’s name in Ukraine and abroad, and the publication of numerous titles increased the corpus of literature in this field of study. However, unlike the majority of publications, the book by Liliana Hentosh Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytskyi (1923-1939): A Trial of Ideals challenged the hagiographic tradition that dominated in Sheptytsky studies and demonstrated that one can make discoveries in the field which appears to be well-studied. The book represents a scholarly research based on nearly six years of work with archival sources in Ukraine, Poland and the Vatican, shedding light on hitherto unknown aspects of the Metropolitan’s life and activities. Although it received less publicity than the volumes on Sheptytsky presented at the large book fairs, this work represents one of the most important biographical researches on Andrey Sheptytsky written in the past decades.
Planned as the first part of Andrey Sheptytsky’s biography, the book covers the years 1923-1939 of his 43-year tenure in the office, the period when “his activity flourished and the plans about a reform of the Greek Catholic Church and the view of the ecumenical dialogue with the [Eastern] Orthodox world took their final shape.” (p. IX) The need to write such a synthetic biographic work is understandable – the access to the archives was opened relatively recently, and the previous biographies written in the 1940s-1960s provided only a schematic picture of his activities, contributing to the creation of the myth about an unfailing leader of the Galician Ukrainians whose life was a succession of victories. The biographical genre allowed the author to give a wider perspective on strategies and interaction of several actors in the interwar period: functioning and internal divisions within the Greek Catholic Church, the religious and national policies of the Polish Republic and local administration, the structure, goals and tactics of the Ukrainian nationalists, and the “Eastern policy” of the Vatican. In turn, the wider context provided in the book helps to understand seemingly contradictory statements and actions of the Metropolitan, which were interpreted differently by his contemporaries and the historians, and to perceive the motives behind his flexibility in certain questions combined with uncompromising standing in others.
As the book title implies, the post-WWI settlement of the borders was not a calm period for the region with multiethnic population; nor did it become restful for Sheptytsky whose steadfast views on the relations between religion and nationalism, vision of the church union and the ways to develop the Greek Catholic Church were often opposed by his rivals, and even by his closest associates within the Greek Catholic Church. The known episodes of the Concordat between Poland and the Vatican, “pacification” of the Ukrainian peasants, destruction of the Orthodox Churches in Chełm region, extremist actions of the Ukrainian nationalists are presented through the archival sources with detail and neutrality, telling the story of breakthroughs and setbacks, disenchantment in state power and continuation of the dialogue despite its inefficiency, loyalty to the Holy See despite falling into disfavor, and physical weakness and loneliness of the most influential and venerable Ukrainian leader of the time.
In the six chapters arranged topically the author managed to address several broad questions – Sheptytsky’s conception of the church-state relations and the attempt to conduct dialogue with the Polish ruling elites (Chapters 1, 2); his criticism of the Ukrainian nationalist movement and attempts to offer religious version of the national idea (Chapter 3); Sheptytsky’s engagement in financial, economic and philanthropic activity (Chapter 4); the Metropolitan’s approach to the church union and its rejections by the Vatican; assessment of Sheptytsky’s motives behind the reforms of the Greek Catholic Church (Chapter 5); his weight in the social and political life in the 1930s (Chapter 6). Apart from these questions, the author offered a critical reassessment of what some scholars call Sheptytsky’s “ecumenism,” examined the constantly pending question of his personal identity in its development, and made quite an unexpected link (relying on Sheptytsky’s staunch fidelity to the core Christian values) between the “Easternizing” policies of the Metropolitan and the modernist currents in the Catholicism. Liliana Hentosh made another contribution towards better understanding of Sheptytsky’s role in the modernizing processes that occurred in the interwar Poland through an in-depth analysis of his previously neglected financial and economic activities.
Despite the extended period and the variety of topics covered in the book, it reads as a coherent, synthetic work with minor repetitions and cross-references, which rather consolidate different chapters. The wealth of empirical material in the book is balanced by the analytical dimension, which is embedded in the narration throughout the book. Although a book format usually poses certain limitations on the author, the work would benefit from a more extensive concluding part and a more detailed analysis of certain questions, for instance, of the terms of the Concordat and its reception by the Polish bishops, a more uniform definition of the “Christian nationalism” and a detailed overview of Catholic parties in the interwar Poland. Most of conclusions which the author makes are rational and well-argued, however, the subsection on Sheptytsky’s attitude to anti-Semitism and racial theories in Chapter 6.2 almost leaves out Sheptytsky from the picture discussing the position of the Vatican instead. Probably in this case the sources provided insufficient information to write these, nonetheless interesting, sections with more detail. Given the existing contested interpretations of Sheptytsky’s effort in countering the anti-Semitic campaign during the WWII, this discussion may still help scholars to find some answers in the earlier period of his life and work.
The wealth of the source material presented by the author clearly sets the book at the forefront of Sheptytsky studies, and at the same time, the new information opens an opportunity for further analysis of the broader religious, political and economic processes of the inter-war period, to which the Metropolitan made an immediate contribution.

Визнання героїчних чеснот митрополита Шептицького Папою Франциском у липні 2015 року стало черговим кроком в беатифікаційному процесі, в той час як відкриття пам'ятника Перед Собором святого Юра у Львові за участі найвищої церковної та свіцької влади показало, що Андрей Шептицький займає чільне місце у каноні українських національних діячів. В рамках відзначення річниці проводились конференції, семінари, круглі столи та виставки, а численні видання поповнили чималу літературу в цій галузі дослідження, здебільшого доповнюючи чи реінтерпретуючи відомі сторінки з життя Митрополита. У цьому відношенні книга Ліліани Гентош “Митрополит Андрей Шептицький (1923-1939): Випробування ідеалів” пердставляє зовсім інший тип дослідження, подаючи нові факти з життя здавалобся добре-знаного церковного діяча.
Запланована як першоа частина біографії Андрея Шептицького, книга охоплює період 1923-1939 його 43-річного перебування в на чолі ГКЦ, період, коли "його діяльність набула розквіту, аі плани стосовно реформи Греко-католицької церкви та бачення екуменічного діалогу з Православним світом повністю сформувалися."(стор IX.) Необхідність нової синтетичної біографії зрозуміла - три попередні біографії були написані ще в сорокових-шістдесятих роках минулого століття, (footnote). Спираючись на обмежену джерельну базу вони висвітлили діяльність та особу митрополита у загальних рисах, що сприяло створенню міфу про всесильного лідера галицьких українців, чиє життя складалось із низки перемог.
Відкиваючи нові та доповнюючи маловідомі сторінки біографії митрополита, ця робота разом з тим кидає виклик агіографічній традиції, що до останнього часу домінувала в дослідженнях про Шептицького, а також демонструє наскільки малодослідженою є ця тема. Такий результат став можливим завдяки копіткій роботі авторки з донедавна закритими матеріалами архівів України, Польщі та Ватикану що ставить книгу в ряд найважливіших досліджень про Андрея Шептицького, написаних за останні десятиліття. Окрім використання нових нових архівних документів, дане біографічне дослідження ширше розкриває стратегії та взаємодію ключових гравців міжвоєнного періоду: функціонування і структуру греко-католицької церкви, національну і релігійну політику центральних органів влади Другої Речі Посполитої та місцевої адміністрації Львівського воєводства, цілі і тактику українського національного підпілля, та "східну політику" Ватикану. Ширший контекст у свою чергу допомагає пояснити дії митрополита, які по-різному сприймалися його сучасниками та істориками, та краще зрозуміти здавалося б суперечливе поєднаня гнучкого підходу до одних питань і безкомпромісної позиції в інших.
Період після врегулювання східних кордонів міжвоєнної Польщі не став спокійним ні для колишньої Східної Галичини з її багатонаціональним населенням, ні для Шептицького чиє бачення відносин між церквою та державою, релігією і націоналізмом, шляхи розвитку греко-католицької церкви та плани об’єднання церков знайшли критиків та опозицію як у польському так і в українському таборах. Представляючи важливі епізоди - конкордат між Польщею та Ватиканом, "пацифікацію" українських селян, знищення православних церков в Холмщині, терористичні акти українських націоналістів - книга розповідає історію поступу та невдач у намаганні митрополита Шептицького забезпечити мирний розвиток своєї церкви, що характеризувалось пошуком шляхів до діалогу з владними структурами, попри розчарування та його неефективність, лояльністю до Святого Престолу не зважаючи на відкинення Ватиканом унійних планів Шептицького. В дійсності перед нами постає людина, чиї погляди не знаходили розуміння навіть у найближчому оточенні греко-католицької церкви, а хронічні хвороби митрополита вели до все більшої ізоляції та самотності здавалося б найшанованішого українського лідера свого часу.
У шести розділах книги, Ліліана Гентош звертається до кількох важливих тем - ставлення Шептицького до відносин між церквою та державою і спроби діалогу з польськими правлячими елітами (розділи 1, 2); його критика українського націоналістичного руху і намагання запропонувати релігійне бачення національної ідеї (розділ 3); фінансово-економічна та благодійна діяльність митрополита (розділ 4); стратегія розвитку греко-католицької церкви у відповідності до унійних планів (розділ 5); участь Шептицького у політичному та громадському житті в 1930-х роках (розділ 6). Окрім цих питань, у книзі пропонується критична переоцінка того, що деякі вчені називають "екуменізмом" Андрея Шептицького, розглядається розвиток ідентичності митрополита Шептицького, і проводяться доволі несподівані паралелі між "Візантинізмом" митрополита Шептицького та передвоєнними модерністськими течіями в католицизмі. Ліліана Гентош зробила ще один внесок для кращого розуміння ролі Шептицького в модернізаційних процесах, міжвоєнної Польщі через поглиблений аналіз його раніше фінансово-господарської діяльності.
Незважаючи на тривалі часові рамки і різноманітність тем, книга читається як цілісний твір, подаючи когерентний та синтетичний наратив і з перехресними посиланнями, які взаємно консолідують різні глави, а великий обсяг емпіричного матеріалу врівноважується аналізом, інтегрованим в текст. Хоча як правило кнжковий формат, створює обмеження щодо обсягу викладеного матеріалу, (the work would benefit from a more extensive concluding part - наукова вартість даної робоити зросла б подаючи) або (дана робота могла би містити) більш широку заключну частину і більш детального аналізу умов конкордату і його сприйняття польським єпископатом, більш цілісного (uniform) визначення "християнського націоналізму" і детальнішого огляду політичного католицизму в міжвоєнній Польщі. Вцілому висновки дослідження добре аргументовані, проте, в частинах дрозділу 6.2 про ставлення Шептицького до антисемітизму та засудження расової теорії, більше уваги приділено позиції Ватикану аніж самого митрополита щодо цих питаннь. З урахуванням все ще відкритого питання щодо формального відзначення зусиль Шептицького у рятуванні євреїв під час Другої світової війни, звернення авторки до цих тем у більш ранній період його життя та діяльності все ще може допомогти науковцям та громадськості чіткіше усвідомити світоглядні позиції митрополита, що спонукали його до непересічних дій під час Голокосту. Введення в науковий обіг документів, які раніше не публікувалися, ставить книгу в авангард робіт про Шептицького, і разом з тим нова інформація відкриває можливість для подальшого аналізу релігійних, політичних і економічних процесів міжвоєнної період, до якого митрополит мав безпосереднє відношення.
