Source text - English At this point, it might be worth making a more general observation. When an author is describing actions and claiming that those actions are motivated by wrong beliefs - and that people do not always know when their beliefs are wrong - there is inevitably a kind of tension between a more straightforward explanation of their behavior and a more complex one. If we were to ask one of these Lucretian characters: "why are you pursuing money?' he might respond: "I'm trying to get money so that I can bolster my security". It is part of Lucretius more complex analysis to claim that the reason such a person desires security is because he fears death, though it may well be the case that partlcular agents who are pursuing money have not made or understood this connection between their pursuits and their fear of death.
But notice, one way of capturing their lack of awareness of the role that the fear of death plays in their lives is to say that they have failed to follow out the appropriate chains of connections between their beliefs. It is not that this lack of awareness is "unconscious" in any meaningful psychoanalytic sense, however: it is just that they have not seen or understood the connections between their beliefs.
Translation - Italian A questo punto, varrebbe la pena di fare un’osservazione di carattere più generale. Quando un autore descrive delle azioni e dice che queste azioni sono motivate da errate credenze, così come che le persone non risultano sempre consapevoli del fatto che le loro opinioni sono erronee, si genera inevitabilmente una sorta di tensione particolare tra due tipi spiegazione del loro comportamento: una più diretta e una più complessa. Se dovessimo chiedere a uno di questi personaggi lucreziani «perché insegui la ricchezza?», egli potrebbe risponderci: «Lo faccio perché così posso accrescere il mio senso di sicurezza». Una delle componenti dell'analisi di tipo più complesso in Lucrezio consiste nella dichiarazione che il motivo per cui una persona cerca la sicurezza attraverso il denaro è il timore della morte, malgrado gli agenti morali che ambiscono al denaro potrebbero anche non aver realizzato o colto la correlazione tra la loro ricerca e il terrore di morire.
Si noti, però, che un modo per cogliere la mancanza di consapevolezza del ruolo che tale paura assolve nelle vite di queste persone è dire che esse non sono riuscite a seguire l’appropriata catena di connessioni causali tra le loro credenze. Questo tipo di mancanza di lucidità non è però “inconscia” secondo il significato propriamente psicoanalitico: tali persone non hanno semplicemente appurato o capito, appunto, le connessioni tra le loro credenze.
