Source text - English The people of Ashkavor crowded around the temple square, eager to witness the ascension of their new guardian -- to stand near the man as he bound their souls to his own. But as his final brush strokes fell against the runestone, and the bond of a new Ascended One was forged, everyone -- even those who'd stayed in their homes -- could sense that something had gone terribly wrong.
He knew the cause instantly. The droplets of ichor he'd procured to amplify the potency of his inkpots had instead contaminated them, and the power of the binding spell he'd cast now threatened to consume him. An inky corruption snaked upward from the runestone, along the handle of his brush, soon overtaking his hands. From there it spread quickly. Once it overcame his face and his mouth, he couldn't have screamed even if he'd wanted to.
All of his life he'd calculated on how to attain ever greater powers than the limits presented by his teachers would allow--going so far as to break the sacred prohibition against augmenting the inks. Indeed, with the wellspring of the Ascended bond open to him, he felt a measure of power coursing into his soul like he'd never imagined. His greatest triumph was upon him, if he could only survive it.
He drew deep from the power of the bond, pushing back against the corrupted ink flow. A great moan filled the air -- the collective cry of his people. Some swayed on their feet. The weakest collapsed. Many tried to run. And still deeper he pulled from their bloodline reservoir. But it wasn't enough to stop the ink tide.
It was only when the breath trapped in his lungs began to fail him, and the inkpool darkness fully encased him, that he saw his way out. The bond he'd made with the Ashkavoran people -- his people -- meant to be drawn upon only in service of their protection... It flowed two ways.
With a final surge of strength -- this time directed by more than just blind repulsion -- he pushed the ink torrent into the bond itself.
Slowly, he felt the tide retreat... and heard the awful wails of his people as the corruption in turn rolled over them. When at last the ink relented, his eyes opened upon a world changed. The Ashkavoran people as he knew them were gone. Every last soul was transformed into terrifying shades of their former selves -- comprised no longer of blood and bone, only viscid, tainted ink.
Translation - Ukrainian Люди Ашкавора зібралися навколо храмової площі з прагненням побачити піднесення свого нового стража. Вони хотіли бути поруч із людиною, яка мала прив’язати їхні душі до своєї власної. Та коли останній мазок його пензля ліг на рунний камінь і зв’язок із новим Піднесеним було запечатано, то всі — навіть ті, хто лишився вдома — відчули, що трапилося дещо жахливе.
Він же одразу зрозумів причину. Краплі сукровиці, які він роздобув для посилення сили чорнила, натомість отруїли його, а сила зв’язувального закляття тепер загрожувала поглинути його. Чорнильна скверна поповзла рунним каменем вгору по пензлю і заразила його руки. Звідти вона швидко поширилася. Коли вона охопила його обличчя і вуста, він уже не міг закричати, навіть якби захотів.
Все своє життя він вираховував, як отримати силу, більшу за ті межі, які дозволяли його вчителі… Заради цього він готовий був піти на порушення священного заповіту про чистоту чорнил. І дійсно, джерело зв’язувальної сили тепер відкрилося для нього, він відчув такий потік сили у свою душу, який не міг раніше й уявити. Його найбільший тріумф був зовсім близько, якщо тільки він зможе його пережити.
Він увібрав силу з глибин зв’язку і спробував виштовхнути назад потік скверни. Великий стогін наповнив повітря — то був колективний крик його народу. Деякі ледь трималися на ногах. Слабкі одразу падали. Багато хто пробував втекти. А він висмоктував їхні життєві сили все більше і більше. Та й цього було замало, щоби зупинити чорнильний потік.
Тільки коли повітря покинуло залиті чорнилом легені, і чорнота вкрила все його тіло, він побачив вихід. Його зв’язок із народом Ашкавора — його народом — мав слугувати виключно задля їхнього захисту… Однак його можна було обернути й навпаки.
Страж зібрав останні сили і — цього разу ним керувала лише сліпа відраза — спрямував потік чорнил на сам зв’язок.
Він почав відчувати, як поступово чорнила відступають… І почув гучні крики свого народу, який охопила скверна. Коли остання краплина чорнил залишила тіло Чорнильника і він розплющив очі, то побачив, що світ змінився. Ашкаворський народ, яким він його знав, більше не існував. Всі до останньої душі перетворилися на жахливі тіні самих себе — в істот не з плоті і крові, а з в’язкого і зіпсутого чорнила.

Source text - English It was seven o’clock of a very warm evening in the Seeonee hills when Father Wolf woke up from his day’s rest, scratched himself, yawned, and spread out his paws one after the other to get rid of the sleepy feeling in their tips. Mother Wolf lay with her big gray nose dropped across her four tumbling, squealing cubs, and the moon shone into the mouth of the cave where they all lived. “Augrh!” said Father Wolf. “It is time to hunt again.” He was going to spring down hill when a little shadow with a bushy tail crossed the threshold and whined: “Good luck go with you, O Chief of the Wolves. And good luck and strong white teeth go with noble children that they may never forget the hungry in this world.”
It was the jackal–Tabaqui, the Dish-licker–and the wolves of India despise Tabaqui because he runs about making mischief, and telling tales, and eating rags and pieces of leather from the village rubbish-heaps. But they are afraid of him too, because Tabaqui, more than anyone else in the jungle, is apt to go mad, and then he forgets that he was ever afraid of anyone, and runs through the forest biting everything in his way. Even the tiger runs and hides when little Tabaqui goes mad, for madness is the most disgraceful thing that can overtake a wild creature. We call it hydrophobia, but they call it dewanee–the madness–and run.
“Enter, then, and look,” said Father Wolf stiffly, “but there is no food here.”
“For a wolf, no,” said Tabaqui, “but for so mean a person as myself a dry bone is a good feast. Who are we, the Gidur-log [the jackal people], to pick and choose?” He scuttled to the back of the cave, where he found the bone of a buck with some meat on it, and sat cracking the end merrily.
“All thanks for this good meal,” he said, licking his lips. “How beautiful are the noble children! How large are their eyes! And so young too! Indeed, indeed, I might have remembered that the children of kings are men from the beginning.”
Now, Tabaqui knew as well as anyone else that there is nothing so unlucky as to compliment children to their faces. It pleased him to see Mother and Father Wolf look uncomfortable.
Translation - Ukrainian Одного теплого вечора о сьомій годині на Сіонійських пагорбах Батько Вовк прокинувся після денного відпочинку. Він почухався, позіхнув та відчепірив один за одним пазурі, аби остаточно позбутися сонливості. Мати Вовчиця лежала, не спускаючи погляду з чотирьох вертких та верескливих малят. Місяць освітлював вхід до печери, де вони усі мешкали.
— Гррр! — мовив Батько Вовк. — Час знову полювати.
Він саме збирався зіскочити вниз пагорбом, коли невелика тінь з кудлатим хвостом перетнула поріг і проскавчала:
— Най щастя буде з вами, Вождю Вовків. І най щастя та міцні білі зуби будуть з вашими шляхетними дітьми, аби вони ніколи не забували голодних цього світу.
Це був шакал Табакі, лизоблюд, до якого індійські вовки ставилися з презирством, бо його метушня і плітки спричиняли сварки. А ще він жер пацюків та шматки шкіри на звалищах поселян. Одначе вони його також і боялися, бо Табакі, більш ніж будь-хто інший у джунглях, мав схильність до нападів шаленства. Під час тих нападів він утрачав страх перед будь-чим, мчав лісом і кусав усе на своєму шляху. Навіть тигр тікав і ховався, коли Табакі божеволів, адже безумство — найганебніша річ, що може охопити дикого звіра. Ми звемо це сказом, а вони називали це девані, — божевілля, — й утікали.
— Можеш зайти і глянути, — неохоче сказав Батько Вовк, — та тут немає їжі.
— Для вовка — так, — сказав Табакі. — Однак для такої слабкої істоти, як я, навіть суха кістка буде чудовим бенкетом. Хто ми є, Ґідур-лоґ, народ шакалів, аби перебирати?
Він поквапився до дальньої стіни печери, де знайшов кістку зі шматком м’яса на ній. Сів і став жваво її гризти.
— Тисяча подяк за цю чудову їжу, — сказав він, облизуючись. — Які ж чарівні шляхетні дітки! Які великі у них очі! І такі юні! Справді, я мав пам’ятати, що діти королів є мужніми від самого народження.
Табакі чудово знав, що немає гіршого знаку, як хвалити дітей просто в очі. Та йому було приємно бачити, як ніяковіють Мати Вовчиця і Батько Вовк.

Creative person, scholar (Ph.D.), writer, translator, editor and traditional artist. Currently I work in the field of game localization (English to Ukrainian) mostly for Valve (Dota 2, CS:GO, TF2, Steam). Whenever I have time I participate in other English to Ukrainian videogame localizations, movies or fiction translation.
