Source text - English If a solution of a polymer in a solvent of lower molecular mass exhibits liquid-liquid demixing, then a strongly asymmetric liquid-liquid demixing gap is typical. A phase diagram for a binary polymer-solvent system is represented schematically in Fig. 1[9]. In this figure the temperature is plotted as a function of the polymer concentration of the polymer solution. At high temperatures the solution is still homogeneous. At lower temperatures liquid-liquid phase separation in a polymer poor and a polymer rich phase can take place. These systems are characterized by an upper critical solution temperature. It should be noted that, for entropic reasons, many polymer-solvent systems also phase separate at temperatures close to or at elevated pressures even higher than the atmospheric boiling point of the solvent. These systems are characterized by a lower critical solution temperature. Liquid-liquid phase separation induced by heating the polymer solution is seldom used to make porous structures.

When does a relationship irrevocably end? The protagonist in Alice Munro’s “The Bear Came Over the Mountain” is Grant, an elderly academic. In the life of quiet retirement, Grant is faced with the unpleasant truth that Fiona, his wife, is losing the years she spent with him to Alzheimer’s disease. Into the void spreading in Fiona’s mind steps Aubrey, a fellow patient at Meadowlake, the institution they are both staying at. Upon his return to Meadowlake after the mandatory waiting of a month, Grant finds that Fiona no longer recognizes him as her husband and has taken up with Aubrey as her companion. Munro uses a non-linear narrative to heighten the sense of Grant’s loss, and this absurd, devastating situation is crisscrossed with his past and the stories of the many women he slept with (which Fiona probably never knew about.) Upon trying to appease Fiona’s anguish at Aubrey’s removal from Meadowlake, Grant stumbles upon a chance to both satisfy his original mission and his decades-long habit penchant for infidelity. In his paper, “Alice Munro, Our Chekhov”, James Wood aptly frames it as follows:; “the philanderer who unexpectedly loses his loyal wife to the love of another man, and then returns to his old erotic ways in order to secure his wife's own continuing fidelity” (Wood). As Wood says, “The Bear Came Over the Mountain” may seem like a story of a man with little regard to marital life, considering his debts of infidelity fulfilled by the duties to his ill wife and thus freed to resume chasing after new partners. However, clear-eyed, unemotional, piercing, the tone of “The Bear Came Over the Mountain” delves into a more complex, ironic theme. A tale of a spouse put on the other side of the telescope after all his years of secret whirlwinds and scandals, “The Bear Came Over the Mountain” is better caught in the words “It’s life. You can’t beat life” (Munro), provided by Marian, a woman who has accepted her plate of woe and troubles caused by her spouse, Aubrey. The complexities of real life makes it possible for the most adversary ideas to coexist in a single man; an adulterer at play for decades may be truly in love with his wife at the same time, without feeling guilt. In this context, it may be said that love, even in its strangest form and through actions most despicable regarding the vows of matrimony, can nonetheless persist.
