There are two basic criteria that the lay-up is designed to meet:
To maintain the security, safety and protection of the rig, crew, and the environment.
To preserve and maintain the structure and machinery by providing protection against corrosion and static seizure.
The extent to which a rig’s owner will lay-up any rig will depend on a number of factors, including, the expected period of lay-up, need to reduce overhead running costs, anticipated time to resumption of operation, time needed for reactivation and the age and value of the rig.
The rig can be laid up either in ‘Hot’, ‘Warm’ or ‘Cold’ mode.
There will, however, be variations on these modes as owners elect different time scales, manning requirements and degree of lay-up.
‘Hot’ lay-up is usually relatively short term and means that sufficient and qualified crew should be on board in order to maintain full time fire, leakage, mooring, safety and security watch of the rig as well as to keep all machineries and equipment in ‘active’ condition, regularly maintained and ready to be operated at short notice.
The advantages are that the rig can be easily laid up and it can be reactivated with less cost, time and effort.
‘Warm’ lay-up is for relatively longer term than ‘Hot’ and means that the rig shall have a reduced number of crew on board and will have its ‘marine side’ machinery working, with ongoing maintenance, whilst the drilling and subsea systems are preserved and shut down.

A extensão pela qual o proprietário vai manter uma sonda em condição de lay-up vai depender de uma série de fatores, incluindo o período estimado de lay-up, necessidade de reduzir custos operacionais gerais, tempo previsto para retomada da operação, tempo necessário para reativação, idade e valor da sonda.
A sonda pode ser colocada em condição de lay-up tanto em modo ‘Quente’, ‘Morno’ ou ‘Frio’.
Haverá, no entanto, variações nestes modos à medida em que proprietários escolham diferentes escalas de tempo, requerimentos da tripulação e grau de lay-up.
Lay-up ‘quente’ é geralmente de curta duração e significa que uma tripulação suficiente e qualificada deve estar a bordo de modo a monitorar fogo, vazamento, amarração, segurança e proteção na sonda, assim como manter todo o maquinário e equipamentos em condição ativa, com manutenção regular e pronta para ser operada a curto prazo.

Lay-up ‘morno’ é para prazos relativamente mais longos do que a ‘quente’ e significa que a sonda deve ter um reduzido número de tripulantes a bordo e terá seu maquinário ‘marítimo’ em atividade, com manutenção contínua, enquanto os sistemas subaquáticos e de perfuração são preservados e desativados.
