Source text - English 2. CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK
The primary purpose of the following discussion consists of
the development of a conceptual framework which should serve
as a guideline to the empirical study in the following chapters.
Up until now sociology has paid little attention to the analysis of
multilingualism. The major sociological theories do not offer much
help when one is developing a theoretical framework for organising
empirical research aimed at answering the questions formulated
in the introduction. The researcher has to use his own lodestar.
Assistance in developing a theoretical framework can be found for
the most part in research on economic and social migration and
integration which has analysed the way migrants learn a new
language. Therefore, I will tie in with the state of art in this
research field. I will start out by giving a definition of language and
individual languages. In a second step I will discuss the central
social functions a language fulfils, whilst differentiating between
the influence of language on society building and on community
building. If language is used for processes of society building,
I will use the term instrumental linguistic capital; if language is
used for community building processes, that is, the formation of a
collective identity, I will use the term symbolic linguistic capital.
In a third step, these concepts will be applied to the ability to
speak several languages. Under certain societal conditions, which
are dealt with in the literature under the heading of globalisation
and Europeanisation, multilingualism becomes a central resource.
Those who have acquired transnational linguistic capital, in other
words are multilingual, are in a position to participate in
transnational processes and Europeanisation, while those who can
only speak their native language are limited to their own country
and can only benefit in a limited way from the advantages of a
united Europe and a globalised world. To have transnational
linguistic capital at one’s disposal is thus a new source of social inequality within a developing European society.

Ο βασικός σκοπός της ακόλουθης συζήτησης συνίσταται στην ανάπτυξη ενός εννοιολογικού πλαισίου το οποίο θα λειτουργήσει ως κατευθυντήρια γραμμή της εμπειρικής μελέτης στα ακόλουθα κεφάλαια. Μέχρι τώρα, η κοινωνιολογία έχει αποδώσει λίγη προσοχή στην ανάλυση της πολυγλωσσίας. Οι μείζονες κοινωνιολογικές θεωρίες δεν προσφέρουν ιδιαίτερη βοήθεια όταν αναπτύσσει κανείς ένα θεωρητικό πλαίσιο για την οργάνωση της εμπειρικής έρευνας στοχεύοντας στην απάντηση των ερωτημάτων που διατυπώνονται στην εισαγωγή. Ο ερευνητής πρέπει να προσανατολιστεί μόνος του. Βοήθεια για την ανάπτυξη ενός θεωρητικού πλαισίου μπορεί να βρεθεί ως επί το πλείστον σε έρευνες σχετικά με την οικονομική και κοινωνική μετανάστευση και ένταξη, η οποία έχει αναλύσει τον τρόπο με τον οποίο οι μετανάστες μαθαίνουν μια νέα γλώσσα. Ως εκ τούτου, θα ευθυγραμμιστώ με τις πιο πρόσφατες εξελίξεις σε αυτό το ερευνητικό πεδίο. Θα ξεκινήσω δίνοντας έναν ορισμό της γλώσσας και των επιμέρους γλωσσών. Σε ένα δεύτερο στάδιο, θα συζητήσω τις κεντρικές κοινωνικές λειτουργίες που εκπληρώνει μία γλώσσα, ενώ θα διακρίνω μεταξύ της επίδρασης της γλώσσας στην κοινωνική και την κοινοτική οικοδόμηση. Εάν η γλώσσα χρησιμοποιείται για διαδικασίες κοινωνικής οικοδόμησης, θα χρησιμοποιώ τον όρο οργανικό γλωσσικό κεφάλαιο∙ εάν η γλώσσα χρησιμοποιείται για διαδικασίες κοινοτικής οικοδόμησης, δηλαδή, για τη διαμόρφωση συλλογικής ταυτότητας, θα χρησιμοποιώ τον όρο συμβολικό γλωσσικό κεφάλαιο. Σε ένα τρίτο στάδιο, αυτές οι έννοιες θα εφαρμοστούν στην ικανότητα να μιλά κανείς αρκετές γλώσσες. Υπό συγκεκριμένες κοινωνικές συνθήκες, οι οποίες απαντώνται στη βιβλιογραφία υπό τη σκέπη των όρων «παγκοσμιοποίηση» και «εξευρωπαϊσμός», η πολυγλωσσία αναδεικνύεται σε κεντρικό πόρο. Εκείνοι, που έχουν αποκτήσει διεθνικό γλωσσικό κεφάλαιο, με άλλα λόγια: οι πολύγλωσσοι, είναι σε θέση να συμμετάσχουν στις διεθνείς διαδικασίες και τον εξευρωπαϊσμό, ενώ εκείνοι που μπορούν να μιλήσουν μόνο τη μητρική τους γλώσσα, περιορίζονται στη χώρα τους και μπορούν μόνο σε περιορισμένο βαθμό να επωφεληθούν από τα πλεονεκτήματα μιας ενωμένης Ευρώπης και ενός παγκοσμιοποιημένου κόσμου. Η κατοχή διεθνικού γλωσσικού κεφαλαίου αποτελεί, λοιπόν, μία νέα πηγή κοινωνικής ανισότητας στο εσωτερικό μίας αναπτυσσόμενης ευρωπαϊκής κοινωνίας.
