Source text - English The early 19th-century literary figure Thomas de Quincey was an opium user. “The subtle powers lodged in this mighty drug,” he enthused, “tranquilize all irritations of the nervous system … stimulate the capacities of enjoyment … sustain through twenty-four hours the else drooping animal energies … O just, subtle and all-conquering opium … Thou only givest these gifts to man; and thou hast the keys of Paradise.” A patient of mine in Vancouver’s infamous Downtown Eastside said it more plainly: “The reason I do drugs is so that I don’t feel the f***ing feelings I feel when I don’t do drugs.”
All drug addicts, even (or perhaps especially) the abject and marginalized street user, seek in their habit the same paradise de Quincey rhapsodized: a sense of comfort, vitality, and freedom from pain. It’s a doomed search that puts in peril their health, societal position, dignity, and freedom. “I’m not afraid of death,” another patient told me. “I’m more afraid of life.” What kind of despair could lead someone to value short-term pain relief over life itself? And what might be the source of such despair?

Source text - English Biochemical psychiatry is now moving in an unfortunate, potentially dangerous, yet predictable direction. It is turning to psychedelic drugs.
Michael P. Bogenschutz, MD writes about this in a recent article in the Psychiatric Times, published April 20th, 2017 and titled “Innovative Strategies for Addressing Substance Use Disorders: The Classic Hallucinogens.” This is how it begins. Dr. Bogenschutz presents himself as simply open to changing the status of hallucinogens for research, which was “prematurely dropped over 40 years ago.” He concludes that “they meet medical standards for safety and efficacy.” Most of the ‘research’ has been for off-label uses, which is of course illegal. He suggests making it legal. It sounds so reasonable, calling for patients to be carefully screened and prepared with appropriate safeguards. He writes, “Taken as a whole, the evidence suggest that classic hallucinogens may hold considerable promise in the treatment of substance use disorders.”
It all sounds so very scientific, thoughtful and reasonable. How could one object? In the language of psychiatric brain diseases, alcoholism and substance abuse are called disorders — “cocaine use disorder” (I love that one). The intent is to portray them as brain diseases which calls for a biochemical cure. But they are not ‘disorders.’ Alcoholism and substance abuse are addictions, which requires a human approach. So the plan is to treat an addictive drug problem with more drugs. The article is filled with technical chemical analyses of LSD, psilocybin, DPT, mescaline, and DMT, which gives a false gravitas to the drugs issue — such intimidating knowledge and expertise.

Πώς θα μπορούσε κανείς να αντικρούσει; Στη γλώσσα των ψυχιατρικών νόσων του εγκεφάλου, ο αλκοολισμός και η κατάχρηση ουσιών αποκαλούνται διαταραχές – λ.χ. «διαταραχή χρήσης κοκαΐνης» (η αγαπημένη μου). Στόχος είναι η απεικόνισή τους ως νόσων του εγκεφάλου, που επομένως χρήζουν βιοχημικής θεραπείας. Δεν είναι «διαταραχές» όμως. Ο αλκοολισμός και η κατάχρηση ουσιών είναι εξαρτήσεις, που επομένως χρήζουν ανθρώπινης προσέγγισης. Η ιδέα, λοιπόν, είναι να αντιμετωπίσουμε ένα πρόβλημα εξάρτησης από ναρκωτικά με περισσότερα ναρκωτικά – και μιλάμε για παραισθησιογόνα. Source text - English AMY GOODMAN: Talk about the Manchester bombing, the significance, the reverberations right now, and the investigation that’s going on.
TARIQ ALI: Well, so far we know very little, Amy, apart from what you’ve already reported on screen. We don’t know whether this 22-year-old suicide bomber was part of a larger group. We do know that the weapons he carried to blow himself up were of a cruder sort. And many people, most serious and seasoned observers of terrorism, are denying that he was linked to ISIS. ISIS, now itself in deep crisis in the Middle East, is claiming any attack, or wherever it happens in the world, as carried out by one of its own. Basically, very little has been revealed by the British intelligence services so far.
There was an initial report saying that they knew his identity and knew who he was, but nothing more has been said. The fact that he is of Libyan descent, was born in this country, and his parents were Libyan exiles, can’t be kept unlinked to the war that was waged on Libya, the six-month bombing carried out by NATO, the fact that that country now is totally wrecked. I mean, we have a pattern: This atrocity happens, we all denounce it, everyone says 95, 96 percent of the Muslim community is opposed to all this—which is all true. Then people like myself and a few others from the antiwar movement say this is not unrelated to the war on terror that has been going on now since 2001. Every Arab country that’s occupied, wrecked, has a consequence in Europe.
So it’s—we’re part of a sort of really vicious, now, cycle, where the wars go on, and terror attacks, carried out usually by tiny jihadi groups or by individuals, as appears to be in this case, goes on. Very little attention now is paid to the foreign policy link with these things, Amy. And that is a bit worrying, because these things started happening in Europe, the United States, after the involvement of the West, in quite a brutal way, in what is going on in the Arab world.
