It's hot as hell in Martirio, but the papers on the porch are icy with the news. Don't even try to guess who stood all Tuesday night in the road. Clue: snotty ole Mrs Lechuga. Hard to tell if she quivered, or if moths and porchlight through the willows ruffled her skin like funeral satin in a gale. Either way, dawn showed a puddle between her feet. It tells you normal times just ran howling from town. Probably forever. God knows I tried my best to learn the ways of this world, even had inklings we could be glorious; but after all that's happened, the inkles ain't easy anymore. I mean - what kind of fucken life is this?

Στο Μαρτίριο ψήνεται ο τόπος από τη ζέστη, μα οι εφημερίδες στη βεράντα έχουν παγερά νέα. Μην μπείτε στον κόπο να μαντέψετε ποιος στεκόταν στο δρόμο όλο το βράδυ της Τρίτης. Θα σας το πω εγώ: η ψηλομύτα κυρα-Λετσούγκα. Πού να καταλάβεις αν έτρεμε ή αν οι νυχτοπεταλούδες και το φως της βεράντας ανάμεσα από τις ιτιές έκαναν το δέρμα της να ανατριχιάζει σαν σατέν φέρετρου σε θύελλα. Όπως και να 'χει, η αυγή αποκάλυψε μια λιμνούλα ανάμεσα στα πόδια της. Σημάδι ότι οι φυσιολογικές εποχές το έσκασαν με ουρλιαχτά απ' την πόλη. Πιθανόν για πάντα. Και τι δεν έκανα για να μάθω πώς λειτουργεί αυτός ο κόσμος, είχα μάλιστα και υπόνοιες ότι θα μπορούσαμε να διαπρέψουμε, αλλά έπειτα από όλα όσα έγιναν, οι υπόνοιες δεν είναι πια ευχάριστες. Θέλω να πω, τι σόι κωλοζωή είναι αυτη;

The only constant thread running through my prison notebooks was a pervasive loneliness with no discernible beginning and no conceivable end. But a corpse could never walk away.

I came to understand that these memories were my salvation. I no longer wanted to know why I had done such things if it meant I wouldn't want to do them anymore. I put my notebooks aside forever. I was different, and that was all. I had always known I was different; I could not trudge through life contentedly chewing whatever cud I found in my mouth, as those around me seemed to do. My boys were only another thing that set me apart from the rest.

The honeymoon lasted nearly two years, and then, almost overnight, the country's economic climate changed: the air became heavy with recession, while the more gloomy forecasters were warning of depression. Suddenly second-hand bookshops were springing up everywhere, proliferating like mushrooms in damp conditions. Two others opened on the same street, not more than a few hundred metres from her. Takings declined, falling to a level where she barely made a wage. Investigating the larger of the two shops, she was disgusted by what she found. The bearded, dishevelled proprietor had no feeling for what he sold, or he would not have housed books in such a dismal place. The fellow had no doubt taken advantage of a cheap lease (the only things flourishing in the city were the FOR SALE and FOR LEASE boards on once-thriving premises, with an obvious sale in every lease), knocked together some rough shelving, and taped a sign on the window announcing BOOKS BY THE KILO. Her disgust turned to anger. Books were not cabbages: they were not meant to be bought, consumed and discarded.
