Source text - English Rolf’s instructor was very impressed with the way he took to flying a powered plane. After only a few hours he left the cockpit and allowed Rolf to take the plane up and land on his own. The feeling of freedom and power this gave the young man was exhilarating. After a few circuits, instead of simply taking off, circling the airfield and then landing, as instructed, he flew away over adjacent fields, ascending and descending and turning in figures of eight.
He saw below him another part of the airfield. Parked there was a group of fighter planes of a type he had never seen before. Interested, he flew down and passed at low speed over the line of planes, noticing their sleek shape, the wings, painted with camouflage shapes, the Luftwaffe emblems painted on the sides of the aircraft and a large white X painted on the black tails.
As he flew over one of the planes was taxiing out. With a roar audible even from his position above, the plane shot along the runway and took off, retracting its wheels almost as soon as it was airborne. It gained speed and seemed to rise almost vertically in front of him, then turned right over in a loop, exposing the light blue paint on its underside. Suddenly the pilot swerved around and shot towards him, reaching him so fast that he had no time to react and passing within a few meters of his little plane. Its slipstream hit the Storch and sent it into a series of oscillations which he had to wrestle to control.
