Source text - English To accurately determine whether or not you and those you live with have influenza, we will need to collect secretions from your nose via a nasal ‘swab.’ To do this, a trial doctor will insert a small, soft-tipped swab into your nostrils, and twirl it around a few times. Before potential participants (which includes both the potential participant and household contacts) start any trial-related activities, they will need to read and sign an informed consent form to show that they understand what the trial involves and agree to take part. Placebos are often used in clinical research trials to help researchers determine how effective the investigational drug is. Without a placebo, it’s very difficult to determine whether any changes during the trial are due to the investigational drug or some other factor.
