Source text - English A long line of shadowy figures moved silently through the tropical jungle, silvery moonbeams occasionally piercing the dense canopy high above, making playful patterns on their bare and sweating shoulders. The forest floor was a soggy mixture of mud and rotting vegetation and each side of the barely visible trail an incredible variety of plants, vines and creepers competing for space and a glimpse of sun, pressed in, reducing visibility to just a few yards. Also competing for survival, hopping, jumping, climbing and slithering creatures rustled ominously in the undergrowth. Everywhere the threat of death hung in the one hundred percent humidity of this cursed, miasmic and primeval land. Poison was everywhere. The frogs which exuded powerful toxin from their skin, plants which, if eaten, would kill or heal, crickets and other forest creatures either highly nutritious or totally deadly, abounded. The thorns which seemed to reach out to tear the skin, the foliage with razor sharp leaves and the jagged rocks all seemed determined to inflict what elsewhere would be a minor wound, but here would result in a rapidly fatal infection, only prevented if you knew which plant to crush and apply, and acted quickly.
None of this faced these men whose home this was, who were at one with this familiar environment to which they had been born. Each was carrying half his body weight in a large, bulky backpack of woven basketwork which chaffed mercilessly with every step. Not one complained, in fact most hardly noticed, their mission was too important, their cargo too precious. Mile after mile they trudged on toward the Rio Uzuma Zinta.

Molemmin puolin hädin tuskin erottuvaa polkua rehotti valtava määrä erilaisia kasveja ja köynnöksiä, jotka kilpailivat elintilasta ja pilkahduksesta aurinkoa, vähentäen näkyvyyden vain muutamiin metreihin. Selviytymisestä kilpailivat myös hypähtelevät, loikkivat, kiipeilevät ja luikertelevat otukset, joiden pahaenteisen rapistelun saattoi kuulla aluskasvillisuuden seasta.
